Access Adds eMagazine Service for Smartphones, Tablet Terminals and Digital TVs

Access CO., a provider of software technologies to the mobile, beyond-PC and digital TV markets, announced that it is expanding its e-publishing platform business by adding an eMagazine service for smartphones, tablet terminals and digital TVs.

The eMagazine service includes the selection and digitization of eMagazine content as well as Access’ NetFront Magazine Viewer v2.0. The eMagazine content provided by Access will be available this autumn as part of DoCoMo’s eBook Trial Service, which features two new DoCoMo Android devices from Samsung Electronics, the GALAXY S smartphone and the GALAXY Tab, the Company said.

According to a release, DoCoMo’s eBook Trial Service runs from October 28, to the end of December 2010. Its goal is to improve the usability of DoCoMo’s planned eBook service through the collection of feedback from users of the trial service. Access is providing eMagazine selection (content aggregation) and content digitization for DoCoMo’s eBook Trial Service.

NetFront Magazine Viewer v2.0 for Android supports advanced features including audio/video playback, image enlargement, call origination and map display. Users can, for example, click on the picture of a restaurant owner and listen to the owner describe his restaurant via video, or pictures in the restaurant menu can be enlarged to show detail, and the phone numbers listed on a page can be clicked on to initiate a call to that number while selecting the restaurant address can display a map of the restaurant’s location, the Company noted. Access has developed a concept version of its eMagazine application for Panasonic’s VIERA series TVs.

Microsoft unveils new line of smartphones

Software giant Microsoft Corp. unveiled a new line of Windows-based smartphones today — the latest attempt made by a rival to challenge Apple’s iPhone.

The new phones, from handset makers including Samsung , LG and HTC , will be available with AT&T (T) coverage starting next month, Reuters reported.

The new phone will resemble Apple’s iPhone, with a touch screen and colored tiles to let users access services like e-mail and music.

Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, has just 5% of the smartphone market, compared with 17% for Google’s Android platform.

Worldwide sales of smartphones will rise 56% in 2010, according to research company Gartner. Sales of personal computers are expected to rise 19%.

Earlier this year, Microsoft pulled its Kin phone less than three months after the launch. The Kin was aimed at teenagers.

Skype has revealed the much awaited Skype For Android application built for Android run smartphones, which is compatible with Android OS 2.1 and above. The announcement was amde on Tuesday and noe Android users will be able to use the VOIP feature on their smartphone by using Wi-Fi or 3G.

The Skype press release states that the application is available as a free download from the Android Market or users can instead get it from Skype’s official website, www.skype.com/m . One of the main features that users can enjoy on Skype for Android, is that they will be able to make free Skype to Skype calls over the internet.

In addition, the Skype for Android feature will see call rates on Skype is lower than conventional call rates used through the cell phone, and it will also help in sending and receiving instant messages between Skype users. One can also receive online calls through Skype, and this makes calling abroad and around the world a lot more convenient.
