Misys Signs Software Licensing Deal to Help Banks Optimise Business Processes

Misys plc (LSE: MSY), the global application software and services company, announces it has selected IBM software to help power its BankFusion platform and help banks develop new processes or adapt existing processes more rapidly to cater more closely to the demands of customers. BankFusion clients can benefit from faster implementation of core banking projects and more flexibility in their operations.

Under the licensing agreement, Misys is incorporating IBM business analytics, information management and application server software, including Business Process Server, into its BankFusion platform. As a result, clients will be able to install a proven, certified process management technology without the need for additional integration and testing of banking applications.

Banks can now tailor complex workflows without custom programming using BankFusion and IBM’s extensive library of automated business processes, saving implementation time and resources. Incorporating IBM software into every BankFusion solution further extends the reach of Misys technology to the world’s largest financial institutions.

New software processes hundred-billion-pixel photos in seconds

Computer scientists from the University of Utah have developed computer software that allows editing of “extreme resolution” image files in a matter of seconds, a process that could previously have taken hours. Whereas existing editing suites require the full gigapixel image to be loaded into a computer’s memory before manipulation can begin, the new development draws a lower resolution preview image from an externally-stored image into the editing screen. Users are said to benefit from being able to make image-wide modifications in seconds rather than hours and on devices normally not nearly powerful enough for such things.

When editing photographs containing billions to hundreds of billions of pixels, existing technologies require full resolution images to be loaded into an application before editing can begin. This, in turn, requires enough memory and processing power on the computer equipment to handle all that data without seizing up. The Visualization Streams for Ultimate Scalability, or ViSUS, software does things a little differently.

ViSUS works by using a sophisticated algorithm to choose the required subset of available pixels to produce an approximate preview of the fully processed monster image which allows editors to work in a fraction of the time taken with existing systems. Valerio Pascucci, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Utah’s Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCI), likens the process to public opinion polling where “you ask a few people and get the answer as if you asked everyone. It’s exactly the same thing.

Know which chip best processes your PC

Do terms like Pentium, Celeron, Dual core, icore, Atom, Opteron or Phenom matter fox you when buying computers? You may want to do with some help.

If you go to buy a desktop or laptop, you may notice that the configurations of the machines, showcased on labels in showrooms, have words like Celeron, Atom, Core2duo, i3, i5, i7, Athlon or Phenom. Ask the salesperson, and you may have a tough time filtering the hardsell to arrive at a meaningful decision, if you are uninitiated.

This need not be the case if you know your primary reason for buying a computer (desktop or laptop). The rest will follow with some homework. For those who do not have the time to do so, here’s a primer. It’s in no way exhaustive and will have to be supplemented by reading PC review websites and PC magazines.
To begin with, alpabhets and words such as Core i3 or Athlon stand for microprocessors that power your machines. In other words, without a microprocessor from an Intel or AMD, your computer simply won’t boot, or start. A microprocessor can be likened with your heart or brain. Also known as a central processing unit (CPU), it’s a computer’s engine, fabricated on a single silicon chip, which rests on a motherboard along with the random access memory (RAM) card and other important peripherals.

A microprocessor executes commands and runs computer programs. Typical computer programs that must be processed by CPUs include internet browsers, word processors, and image-editing software. Hence, whether you are purchasing a PC, a video game console or any other electronic device, the performance of its microprocessor is a primary consideration. Specifications include clock frequency, addressable memory and the number of cores (for instance, dual core, quad core or multi-core — the more the core, the better). In sum, the faster the processor, the racier your machine.

The clock rate is often called clock frequency or CPU frequency. It is most often measured in gigahertz (GHz) and megahertz (MHz) and is directly proportional to the performance of the microprocessor. For instance, if a microprocessor has a clock rate of 3 GHz, it can perform around 3 billion math calculations a second. With a clock rate of 100 MHz, it can execute about 100 million calculations a second.

The addressable memory that the microprocessor supports is also important. The more the memory, the faster will it upload and download web pages, graphics and videos. Addressable memory is displayed most often in gigabytes (1GB = 1 billion bytes) or megabytes (1MB = 1 million bytes).

Now, words like Core 2 simply represent a brand encompassing a range of Intel’s consumer 64-bit x 86-64 single-, dual-, and quad-core microprocessors based on the Core microarchitecture. Core-based processors do not have Hyper-Threading (which makes the computer believe it has two processors instead of a single physical one and allocates tasks more efficiently) technology that was found in Pentium 4 processors. This is because the Core microarchitecture is a descendant of the P6 microarchitecture, which was used by Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, and Pentium M (meant for laptops, just as the Atom processor today).

The successors to the Core 2 brand are a set of Nehalem microarchitecture-based processors called Core i3, i5, and i7. Core i7 was officially launched in November 2008 as a family of three quad-core processor desktop models. More models started appearing through 2009. With the launch of 32 nanometre (nm) processors, Intel plans to discontinue some Atom, Celeron, Pentium, Core 2, and even Core i7 models.

The Core 2 Duo has been the processor of choice in laptops for about three years. The Core i3 is very similar — both are dual-core processors and most Core 2 Duo(s) and Core i3(s) have similar clock speeds. However, the processors are based on different architectures. The Core i3 is the slowest variant of the Nehalem-based processor.

Intel chips are very well known. However, it’s important to note that Intel’s rival AMD has powerful chips, which have historically been 25-30 per cent cheaper than Intel chips with similar processing powers. This time around, for instance, Intel’s core chips are being compared with AMD’s Phenom chips.

However, even with recent gains, AMD held only 12.1 per cent of the global microprocessor market, compared with Intel’s 80.6 per cent, research firm iSupply Corp said in March 2010.

Going ahead, AMD’s recently demonstrated its first Fusion processors — which combine traditional CPUs and graphics cores into what it calls accelerated processing units (APUs). AMD has been talking about the Fusion strategy for years, ever since it bought graphics chip maker ATI. Its laptop roadmap contains two Fusion chips for next year — Llano, a quad-core chip based on a 32nm process, aimed at mainstream and performance laptops; and Ontario, a lower-power dual-core chip aimed at the ultrathin and netbook markets.

Intel, on its part, is showing off Sandy Bridge, which will be its new architecture at 32nm. Though many specifications are not out, experts expect to see both dual-and quad-core versions as part of its 2011 notebook platform.

Leading software maker selects kofax to accelerate financial processes

Kofax plc (LSE: KFX), the leading provider of document driven business process automation solutions, today announced it will provide an invoice processing solution to a leading provider of design, engineering and entertainment software. The value of the contract to Kofax exceeds $300,000.

The firm will implement Kofax Capture, Kofax Transformation Modules and Kofax Communication Server to capture data from approximately 120 thousand invoices it receives annually.

The resulting data and images will be exported to the firm’s SAP ERP Financials system for further processing and its IXOS content management system for archive purposes. The solution should help the firm accelerate its payment processes, reduce manual tasks and improve data accuracy.

New software solution helps charity ‘transform’ communication processes

A leading UK charity has “transformed” its communication processes with the implementation of a new software system

The British Red Cross said its new EPoS solution, which is provided by Cybertill, has improved communication processes between its head office and the charity’s 323 retail branches.

According to the organisation, the new process has brought about an increase in re-stocking efficiency through instant dialogue between branches and head office.

‘Whereas, previously, stores would operate in isolation, unable to access the charity’s website, communicate between shops or access information stored on the intranet, each staff member now has an email ID and can receive and share information, ideas, alerts, messages and documents,’ explained the organisation.

By introducing Cybertill’s system the charity also claimed it is now better prepared to respond to unforeseen emergency appeals.

The implementation of the software, which caters for 600 employees and 6,000 volunteers, has also seen the British Red Cross nominated for a Retail Week Technology Award.

D-tools upgrades system integrator software

D-Tools has announced the release of the newest release of its System Integrator software, SI 5.5. SP2. D-Tools System Integrator is currently used by over 3,000 companies to streamline the design, estimation, and documentation processes associated with the installation and integration of low voltage systems.

SP2 contains over 20 new usability features and enhancements, fixes numerous bugs, and introduces new support for Canadian Quick Book 2010 users.

Hard facts on software

Working in Gaborone this week I had to look up some information on the web when I came across an interesting series of short articles on ERP . I have therefore taken the liberty of adapting part of this work here.

ERP’s best hope for demonstrating value is as a sort of battering ram for improving the way your company takes a customer order and processes it into an invoice and revenue—otherwise known as the order fulfillment process. That is why ERP is often referred to as back-office software. It normally doesn’t handle the up-front selling process (although most ERP vendors have developed CRM software or acquired pure-play CRM or POS system providers that can do this)

When a sales person enters a customer order into the system, he has all the information necessary to complete the order (the customer’s credit rating and order history from the finance module, the company’s inventory levels from the warehouse module and the shipping dock’s trucking schedule from the logistics module, for example).

People in these different departments all see the same information and can update it. When one department finishes with the order it is automatically routed via the ERP system to the next department.

To find out where the order is at any point, you need only log in to the ERP system and track it down. With luck, the order process moves like a bolt of lightning through the organisation, and customers get their orders faster and with fewer errors than before. ERP can apply that same magic to the other major business processes, such as employee benefits or financial reporting.

That, at least, is the dream of ERP. The reality is much harsher.

Let’s go back to those inboxes of old for a minute. That process may not have been efficient, but it was simple. Finance did its job, the warehouse did its job, and if anything went wrong outside of the department’s walls, it was somebody else’s problem. Not anymore.
With ERP, the sales persons are no longer just typists entering someone’s name into a computer and hitting the return key.

The systems screen makes them businesspeople. It flickers with the customer’s credit rating from the finance department and the product inventory levels from the warehouse. Will the customer pay on time? Will we be able to deliver the order on time?

These are decisions that sales staff never had to make before, and the answers affect the customer and every other department in the company. But it’s not just the sales staff who have to wake up.

People in the warehouse who used to keep inventory in their heads or on scraps of paper now need to put that information in the system. If they don’t, sales staff will see low inventory levels on their screens and tell customers that their requested item is not in stock. Accountability, responsibility and communication have never been tested like this before. Everybody now has to work as a team since the company wants to deliver a single picture of efficiency to the customer.

People don’t like to change, and ERP asks them to change how they do their jobs. That is why the value of ERP is so hard to pin down. The changes companies make in the way they do business is as important as the software. If you use ERP to improve the way your people take orders, manufacture goods, deliver them and charge for them, you will see value from the software. If you simply install the software without enhancing the way people do their jobs, you may see much less value than expected.

So its all about people, processes and the software, and you need to have a good software to begin with or else your efforts on people and processes might be wasted.
