LSI RAID Controller Software Uses SSDs To Up Server, App Performance

August 10th, 2011

LSI on Tuesday launched a new version of its caching software which turns any SSD (solid-state drive) into a high-performance storage tier for frequently-accessed data and mission-critical applications.

The launch of the software is the latest in a string of industry moves to improve application and server performance by adding or making use of SSD and other Flash or DRAM technology.

LSI’s new MegaRAID CacheCade Pro 2.0 software substantially reduces the latency for financial, cloud, e-mail, and high-performance computing applications, said Scott Cleland, worldwide channel product marketing manager for the Milpitas, Calif.-based storage vendor.

When MegaRAID CacheCade Pro was launched in May of 2010, it accelerated applications using SSDs for read-only operations, Cleland said. The primary difference with version 2.0 is that it works for write operations as well, he said.

“We’re focusing on accelerating I/O and closing the performance gap between CPU and hard drive performance,” he said. “We’re completely agnostic. If your file system needs acceleration, we do it. If your application needs acceleration, we do it.”

LSI’s MegaRAID CacheCade Pro 2.0 integrates a server’s SSDs and hard drives to write frequently accessed data to the SSD to improve performance by up to 13 times that offered by hard drives alone, Cleland said. “Customers get the performance of SSDs with the low cost-per-GB of hard drives,” he said. “Customers see tremendous improvement by just dropping in a couple of SSDs.”

The software works transparently to users to continuously monitor data traffic through LSI MegaRAID 6-Gbps SATA and SAS RAID controllers. Frequently-accessed data is written to the SSD for quick access, Cleland said.

The MegaRAID CacheCade Pro 2.0 increases performance at a much lower cost than the common alternative of short-stroking hard drives, Cleland said.

Short-stroking hard drives is a process whereby partitions in a hard drive are turned off to increase performance by decreasing the distance a drive head has to move to read or write data. However, short-stroking results in a significant decrease in the capacity of a hard drive.

Cleland gave an example of the savings that can be achieved by comparing the findings of an actual data center customer who tried the MegaRAID CacheCade Pro 2.0 software. With the software, the customer used four Intel (NSDQ:INTC) SSDs and 14 Seagate 73-GB hard drives to achieve the same performance as another system with no SSDs and 192 Seagate hard drives, Cleland said.

Factoring in the smaller equipment requirement and the resulting savings in data center cooling and power, Cleland said the MegaRAID CacheCade Pro 2.0 solution costs $27,021over a four-year period compared to $151,128 for the all-hard drive solution.

Accelerating server and application performance via SSD or Flash memory technology has become an important trend in the hard drive industry.

Several vendors, including Hitachi GST, Seagate, Intel, STEC, Texas Memory Systems, and others have introduced a tidal wave of new SSDs. Other vendors, including including LSI and Adaptec, have introduced plug-in cards with integrated solid-state storage to provide high-performance capabilities directly inside a server.

Several other vendors, particularly startups such as FlashSoft, offer software to virtualize Flash memory to increase server and application performance, often over multiple servers.

Cleland said the primary difference with the MegaRAID CacheCade Pro 2.0 software lies in the fact that it is integrated with the LSI RAID controllers, and can be turned on for a list price of $270.

“Who’s best to do this?” he said. “We’re at the center of all that data traffic. You only need to add a very thin device driver. It works across 14 different operating systems.”

LSI Corporation has announced four new advanced software options for LSI MegaRAID 6Gb/s SATA+SAS controller cards. The new software offerings are designed to provide white box channel partners with enhanced performance and data protection capabilities, enabling end users to address key business challenges while helping to deliver a higher return on their IT investments.
“This is truly establishing LSI in the channel,” said Suresh Panikar, senior manager, worldwide channel marketing at LSI. “Last year we started our channel strategy with the 6Gb/s MegaRAID, and then added the LSI partner program, and then added to the portfolio in January by bringing out the 3ware brand with 6Bg tech, and then introducing 6 Gb JBODS in March.”

“Continuing that trend, what we are now doing is providing certain software packs, which will benefit system builders who do video applications, data center applications, high performance computing, storage appliances, and general purpose servers,” he said.

The one partners have been asking for the most is the LSI MegaRAID CacheCade software pack. It is designed to significantly accelerate the performance of hard disk drive (HDD) arrays by enabling solid-state drives (SSDs) to be configured as a secondary tier of cache, so that the most repeatedly read data is accessed through the SSD rather than the main drive. CacheCade software helps to maximize transactional I/O performance for read-intensive applications, delivering up to a 50X performance improvement with only an incremental investment in SSD technology.

The software is best suited for highly random I/O block-oriented applications that frequently read and re-read data from a small working set such as web, file, SQL and other transactional server applications.

The CacheCade software pack includes MegaRAID FastPath software and is delivered to customers as a bundled solution consisting of both products.

LSI MegaRAID FastPath software is basically an extension of CacheCade. It provides performance acceleration for SSD arrays connected to an LSI MegaRAID 6Gb/s SATA+SAS controller. The software is designed to substantially boost storage subsystem and overall application performance, particularly for workloads requiring high levels of random read/write operation such as transactional database applications.

With MegaRAID FastPath software enabled, SSD configurations can sustain over 150,000 read I/Os per second (IOPS) in RAID 0 environments. The software supports full optimization of SSD and HDD virtual disk groups to deliver a 2X improvement in read and write IOPS compared to MegaRAID controllers not utilizing FastPath software.

The third pack is LSI MegaRAID Recovery software, designed to enhance data protection through rapid file and volume-level data recovery capabilities using snapshot functionality. Users can capture snapshots of source volume data at designated points in time and restore data from those points should accidental or malicious data loss or corruption occur.

The software is designed to allow lost data from disks to be recovered in minutes, minimizing downtime and helping to eliminate the lengthy process of restoring data from tape. The software helps to satisfy the growing need for more frequent restore points and reduced recovery times, providing IT organizations with new levels of data protection and business continuity.

Finally, to avoid the high costs associated with data loss or theft, LSI MegaRAID SafeStore software, together with self-encrypting drives (SEDs), helps to secure a drive’s data from unauthorized access or modification resulting from theft, loss or repurposing of drives. SafeStore software combines local key management with drive-level encryption to provide businesses with cost-effective security of data at rest, while preserving system performance and ease-of-use. Panikar said there had also been substantial channel demand for this offering.

The MegaRAID CacheCade Software Pack sells for $USD 270, the MegaRAID FastPath Software, for $USD 165, the MegaRAID Recovery Software for $USD 150 and theMegaRAID SafeStore Software for $USD 90.
