Zoho launches Android and iPad apps for its CRM and project software

March 27th, 2012

Zoho expanded its push into mobile applications by rolling out native Android and iPad clients for its CRM and project management software.

The company, which offers a wide range of web-based business applications, is also planning to preview an iPad version of its CRM (customer relationship management) application during an event in San Francisco yesterday, said Raju Vegesna, Zoho evangelist.

Zoho’s decision to focus on mobile applications for CRM and Projects makes sense, given that users of those types of software tend to be in the field, meeting with customers or working on various tasks.

The iPhone Projects application allows users to create project tasks as well as edit existing ones or mark them as complete. They can also use “start-stop” timing widgets to record hours they work on a job, for later inclusion in the project’s overall time sheet, Zoho said.

Meanwhile, the CRM Android application gives access to contacts, accounts, leads and other fields in the CRM system, which can also be edited and deleted.

Both the Projects and CRM mobile clients enable offline activity, with data synchronised back up to Zoho’s servers once the user re-establishes connectivity, Vegesna said.

Zoho is gearing most of its native mobile application efforts on iOS and Android devices, he added. BlackBerry is still getting some attention, “but increasingly that’s going to be a lower priority for us.”

Zoho also offers “mobile-optimised” browser-based versions of its software, which detect the device being used and render the user interface accordingly. Still, the native applications offer a “much faster” experience, Vegesna said.

The Projects iPhone and CRM Android applications require $3 per user per month subscriptions.

Chemical Safety Software Releases EMS 5.0 and iPad Apps

March 21st, 2012

“Managing hazardous materials on mobile devices such as barcode scanners and PDAs has always been part of our offering, so the shift to the iPad was a natural,” said Robert Dunn, Director of Sales and Marketing at Chemical Safety. “Plus, the demand is clearly there.”

EMS 5.0 is based on the DotNet framework, which offers many significant benefits – web browser interoperability, the ability to add custom queries and forms, and improved navigation, speed and stability. “Overall, the user experience is making a great leap forward,” added Tony Diamantidis, Executive Vice President.

As an enterprise software solution, EMS is available in multiple languages and is integrated with the regulatory requirements of US Federal, State and local reporting rules, European Union rules including REACH, compliance rules of countries in Asia, including China and Japan and international rules such the United Nations-sanctioned GHS, which creates globally uniform chemical labeling and classification. GHS is being adopted by OSHA in the 2nd quarter of 2012.

EMS includes tools for managing surplus chemicals and a Greener Chemical Alternatives search feature based on data from the US EPA – or approved by various entities as environmentally friendly – which can be cross-referenced to an organization’s chemical inventories. This allows chemist and principal investigators to search for and obtain more environmentally friendly chemicals, thus reducing hazards in the workplace.

Adobe Releases Photo-Editing Software for Apple’s IPad

February 28th, 2012

Adobe Systems Inc., taking another step toward making its software more compatible with Apple Inc.’s devices, released a pared-down version of Photoshop editing software for the iPad.

Photoshop Touch, a tablet-computer version of Adobe’s Photoshop, includes features for combining images and applying photo effects to create printed pages and websites. The software, which already runs on Google Inc.’s Android operating system, will sell for $9.99 in Apple’s iTunes App Store. Adobe planned an announcement today to mark the start of the Mobile World Congress, scheduled to run through March 1 in Barcelona.

Adobe, the largest maker of graphic-design software, is delivering more tablet- and Web-based versions of programs as it moves beyond personal-computer software. The San Jose, California-based company is also adapting products for the increasingly popular HTML 5 programming language and cloud- computing software.

The changes are intended to accommodate an industry shift away from Adobe’s older Flash technology and ensure that Adobe programs run on devices from Apple, which had barred Flash from iPhones and iPads.

In addition to the iPad version of Photoshop Touch, Adobe released a test version of Air software that lets Flash developers create applications running on Android and on Apple’s iOS operating system.

Game Performance

Air 3.2 includes the ability for applications to use graphics processors in tablets and smartphones to improve the performance of games, Danny Winokur, an Adobe vice president, said in a telephone interview. The final version of the software will be released in March.

Another new product, Project Primetime, will let broadcasters publish copy-protected Internet videos while enjoying the ability to insert ads and measure viewership.

Adobe’s creative-solutions division supplied 41 percent of the company’s gross profit last quarter and delivered a gross margin of 97 percent, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. In November, Adobe said it would concentrate its development and sales on digital publishing and advertising to seek new revenue streams.

The company’s Digital Publishing Suite is used by companies such as Martha Stewart Omnimedia Inc. and Conde Nast Publications to create tablet-computer versions of magazines. Readers downloaded about 16 million digital issues created with the software in the past 12 months, Winokur said.

Adobe fell 0.5 percent to $33.25 at 10:22 a.m. in New York. The shares were little changed in the 12 months through Feb. 24.
