IBM and Pancetera software support Cal EMA’s state-wide emergency services

September 1st, 2010

The California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA) is gaining efficiency and saving costs in storing state-wide data by using a smarter solution from IBM (NYSE: IBM | PowerRating) and business partner Pancetera, a provider of virtual storage optimization solutions, IBM said on Tuesday. Financial details were not available.

The new solution reduces the amount of data required to be backed up by 75% and accelerates backup to minutes rather than hours.

Cal EMA relies on IBM Tivoli Storage Manager’s centralised, policy-based, enterprise class, data backup and recovery software.

Also, recently the Agency rolled out the virtual storage optimisation solution from Pancetera to further extend Tivoli’s capabilities into VMware’s virtual environment.

With about 20% of its data live, Cal EMA relies on IBM tape storage for archived data on projects years and even decades old.

California Agency Taps IBM and Pancetera Software to Support State-Wide Emergency Services

September 1st, 2010

IBM (NYSE: IBM) on August 31 announced that the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA) is gaining efficiency and saving costs in storing state-wide data by using a smarter solution from IBM and business partner Pancetera that reduces the amount of data required to be backed up by 75 percent and accelerates backup to minutes rather than hours.

According to IBM, Cal EMA was established in 2009 combining the Office of Emergency Services and Office of Homeland Security to manage the coordination of overall state agency response to major disasters in support of local government. The Agency is responsible for assuring the state’s readiness to respond to and recover from all hazards – natural, manmade, war-caused emergencies and disasters – and for assisting local governments in their emergency preparedness, response, recovery and hazard mitigation efforts.

As such, Cal EMA has a variety of data it has to support and archive for decades, including information on physical assets across the state, reimbursement for damages, aid packages, critical infrastructure and real-time data collected by satellite across California’s 58 counties. Increasingly, the Agency is consolidating and managing this data on virtual machines.

“Our mission is to be working when everyone and everything isn’t – in fires, floods, earthquakes, landslides and manmade crises – so we needed a backup and recovery solution that can give us timely, reliable data,” said Lovell Hopper, manager, Infrastructure Services, Cal EMA. “Our new backup combination allows us to master our virtual and physical infrastructure by backing up data with greater ease and speed.”

Cal EMA relies on IBM Tivoli Storage Manager’s centralized, policy-based, enterprise class, data backup and recovery software. Recently the Agency rolled out the virtual storage optimization solution from Pancetera to further extend Tivoli’s capabilities into VMware’s virtual environment. Pancetera software recognizes the Agency’s unique new data that needs to be backed up, eliminating the need to move large amounts of empty space and redundant data. This has translated to a 75 percent reduction in Cal EMA’s data backup. It has sped backups in minutes rather than hours for the Agency’s rapidly growing virtual machine infrastructure.

Being able to reduce data is critical in Cal EMA’s virtual environment where a full ’snapshot’ of the data would require about 15 to 20 terabytes of data to be backed up every time. This process could have impacted the Agency staff’s user experience but with Pancetera’s SmartRead technology, Cal EMA has significantly reduced the I/O load and bandwidth on its storage and network so it can run backups anytime without impacting performance of production systems. Because the combined Tivoli-Pancetera solution requires no staged backups or agents in the virtual machine, it saves Cal EMA the expense of supporting proxy storage while still being able to rely on Tivoli Storage Manager for managing and optimizing (deduplication) the backup and recovery solution.

EMA Softech Introduces DataRECONCILER™; Cloud Computing Application Quickly Reconciles Mountains of Data

July 12th, 2010

With the introduction of DataRECONCILER,™ EMA Softech has declared an end to the days when accountants and other professionals sit hunched over their computers for hours or days trying to reconcile mountains of data.

DataRECONCILER is a powerful online hosted application, offered as a subscription service that quickly compares and reconciles any two large sets of data. This software-as-a-service (SaaS) application supports uploading of data in Microsoft Excel™ (.xls) and Comma Separated Value (.csv) file formats — common export formats for most databases and accounting systems.

DataRECONCILER will benefit accountants, auditors, financial professionals, IT staff, marketing or sales people, statisticians, purchasing staff, or anyone who needs to compare multiple sources of data or versions of similar data to identify differences between them.

“You can use DataRECONCILER for practically any kind of reconciliation,” said Charles Gabriel, CEO of EMA Softech. “You can compare any two sets of numbers and/or text. For example, compare trial balances from different periods; payroll data from different months; two versions of budget files for their differences, or even two different contact lists.”

DataRECONCILER users can, for example:

Reconcile external records to internal records, such as bank statements to cash book transactions, or determine which checks and deposits are still outstanding;

Reconcile two accounts that represent same information, such as inter-company accounts or branch office control accounts;
Merge data from an older system to a newer system and identify duplicates;

Compare data between two different systems, such as a CRM and an order entry system, or Microsoft Outlook™ and Lotus Notes;™
Compare an earlier set of accounting data to a newer set of data, like closing balances to opening balances;
Compare vendor shipping records to internal receiving logs;

Identify and flag large variations in the market value of individual stocks or mutual funds in a portfolio, and
Compare sales pipeline data from different periods for lost sales reporting.

As a “cloud computing” software application, DataRECONCILER requires no downloads or installation of software to a subscriber’s computer. The system implements updates and upgrades automatically, and a subscriber always has access to the latest version of the application at no additional effort or cost. A subscriber can access and use the application from anyplace that has Internet access — office, home, or on the road — via their computer’s web browser.

DataRECONCILER guarantees complete confidentiality and security of user data. Subscriber data uploads and downloads utilize 128 bit encryption (the same as online credit card purchases), and a secure SAS70 environment hosts the application.

For subscribers who do not want to store data remotely, the Standard Edition of DataRECONCILER deletes all uploaded source data files and comparison summary reports once they exit the application. Subscribers can, however, save and maintain the comparison parameters (reconciliation matching rules) of each comparison on the DataRECONCILER website for future use and the summary reports on their PC or local storage.

For subscribers who want to save time and avoid uploading previously used data in future comparisons, the DataRECONCILER application also offers data storage options. These options enable a subscriber to save uploaded data files—in addition to comparison parameters—on the host server. EMA Softech ensures the privacy and security of all uploaded, downloaded and stored data.
Annual subscription prices vary from the Standard Edition based on the amount of online storage a subscriber chooses for data retention.
