Database-Software Firm Tries ‘Action Apps’

September 22nd, 2011

Ingres Corp., a maker of database software, is changing its name and shifting directions sharply to kick sales growth into a higher gear.

The company is looking to address longstanding gripes that so-called business-intelligence software—programs used by companies that take snapshots of business information, such as regional sales data, to help users identify key trends—is too difficult to use. Ingres wants to create products that behave more like the consumer-oriented apps found on smartphones, which can take action in response to changes in business information.

To reflect its new offerings, the Silicon Valley company is changing its name to Actian Corp.

Actian’s new programs—dubbed action apps—might, for example, carry out chores as simple as sending a text message or scheduling a meeting if the prospects for an important deal change suddenly, Ingres executives say. In other cases, apps can be configured to take more direct action, like completing purchases in response to triggering events.

Or a retailer could create an app to help consumers automatically buy goods or services when the price reaches a certain point, said Steve Shine, Ingres’s chief executive and president.

The plan requires an online service to centrally collect and analyze data for companies, drawn from their internal business software as well as from external sources such as credit agencies or Facebook, Mr. Shine said. The company also plans to provide tools to help customers create apps that can take action based on changes in that information. The service is expected to be built using VectorWise, a high-performance database developed by Dutch researchers that Ingres sells.

The strategy shift is the latest twist for a company that traces its roots to research in the 1970s at the University of California at Berkeley. A database developed there, called Ingres, was first commercialized by Relational Technology Inc. and purchased in 1994 by CA Inc. It was spun out of CA in 2006 in a deal led by Garnett & Helfrich Capital, a Silicon Valley private-equity firm that still controls the closely held company.

Though Ingres has a tiny share of the market compared to giant Oracle Corp., it has been generating plenty of cash, Mr. Shine said. But the company saw an opportunity to grow by exploiting customer dissatisfaction with business-intelligence software, he said. Mr. Shine said many such programs go largely unused by companies that buy them, because they are difficult to use and tend to reflect data that may have changed by the time the user sees it.

“Executives have lots of information, but they don’t know when to take action and what action to take,” said Ross Altman, a Gartner analyst briefed on the Actian plan.
Ingres hasn’t set pricing or other details for the action app strategy, which is expected to roll out over the course of 2012
Robin Bloor, another analyst who heads a research firm called Bloor Group, said the plan is promising enough that he expects other to emulate it.
“If somebody else isn’t prepared to do this right now, there will competition in six to nine months

Oracle’s Sun and Database Software Sales, Bigger Than Expected

September 18th, 2010

Oracle Corporation managed to outdo itself as it posted a profit which far exceeds what analysts have previously estimated. The sales of Sun Microsystems and database software all did the trick which helped in the capitalization on the recovery of IT spending.

Known as the world’s second biggest software maker, Oracle managed to improve corporate expenditures through its wide array of products gained from numerous acquisitions. With regard to hardware, Oracle grabbed Sun last January with a $7.3 billion deal. Moreover, with Mark Hurd in the company, analysts are positive that he can help expand Sun into several other hardware areas.

Specifically regarding Sun, this hardware company managed to increase its net income from $1.12 billion into $1.35 billion one year earlier. It has been Oracle’s goal for this firm to add another $1.5 billion in terms of operating income to the entire company during its first year of operations under Oracle. This must be the target even if Sun reported losses during the time of acquisition.

Delphix’s virtualization software reduces database management headaches

September 14th, 2010

Delphix is one of 70 companies chosen by VentureBeat to launch at the DEMO Fall 2010 event taking place this week in Silicon Valley. After our selection, the companies pay a fee to present. Our coverage of them remains objective.

Database management is a nightmare for most organizations, and that’s something that Palo Alto, Calif.-based Delphix aims to fix with the Delphix Server database virtualization software its unveiling today at the DEMO conference in Silicon Valley.

Its technology shrinks storage requirements for non-production databases by a factor of ten, minimizes database refresh times, and reduces setup time from days to minutes, the company says.

In short, it’s vastly efficient compared to the traditional database-management model, which is notoriously complex, redundant, and expensive. According to Oracle, providers of one of the most popular traditional database solutions, most customers create seven copies of every production database for development, QA, testing, pilots, training, staging, and operational reporting.

Instead of creating several database copies, users can use Delphix Server to create a single virtual environment from which they can instantly create as many virtual databases as necessary.

In addition to the above benefits, Delphix’s software also lets users instantly recover data when necessary, thanks to the company’s TimeFlow technology which keeps track of database changes, and can enhance existing backup solutions, allowing users to launch archived databases in minutes.

Delphix founder and CEO Jedidiah Yueh first noticed the need for a database virtualization solution when he dealt with customers for his previous company, Avamar, which focused on data deduplication (removing duplicate files to reduce storage load).

His customers found that server virtualization, which allowed them to virtualize individual servers instead of relying on physical hardware, allowed them to be much more flexible about their computing requirements, but traditional database management left them stymied. He realized that offering the database equivalent of server virtualization would be something many organizations would appreciate. Delphix’s customers now include some of the world’s largest companies.

Founded in June 2008, Delphix currently has 35 employees, and has raised a total of $20 million over two rounds of funding from Greylock Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
