Records software, hardware coming to Startzman,

May 2nd, 2010

Because of its orientation as a community owned, Wooster Community Hospital offers a number of programs each year aimed at serving the wellness of Wayne County.

But a recent donation to one of its health care partners may have raised that bar even higher.

Without solicitation, the Wooster Community Hospital Foundation stepped forward to pay for the hardware and software needed to convert the Viola Startzman Free Clinic medical records to an electronic format.

Hospital CEO Bill Sheron said the conversion eventually will be mandated as part of the government health care overhaul.

“We thought it would be a good move for our foundation to help them buy the initial equipment to get compliant with EMR,” Sheron said.

According to Startzman Clinic Executive Director John Moritz, the measure will make his organization run more efficient, as doctors at the clinic will have access to online patient records.

“It’s a sizable gift,” said Moritz, who wished not to disclose the dollar amount. “It’s something we couldn’t afford to do on our own, and it’s something very much needed. It kind of brings us up to speed with the rest of the medical community.”

Moritz said the clinic is seeing about 2,000 patients who account for nearly 11,000 visits to the clinic. The number typically has increased by 10 percent each year since the clinic opened in 1995.

“We do a lot of crossover work with Wooster Community, Dunlap, Cleveland Clinic, Wooster Eye Center, Wooster Orthopedics,” Moritz said. “Although we share patients, because of necessities, especially in terms of patients to the emergency room, we do a lot of follow-up care.”

Moritz said having electronic medical records will help eliminate errors made because of the inability to decipher certain hand writing, and will increase access to the records.

“Right now we have a lot of volunteers transposing records onto the computer so we can generate reports,” Moritz said. “That will make us cost effective down the road because once everyone gets onto it, things will happen faster. We won’t have as many volunteers going through the charts.”

Mayor Bob Breneman, who serves as chairman of Wooster Community Hospital’s board of governors, said the hospital should be helping the clinic because of the important role the clinic serves in the community.

“It’s a very important player in providing health care for our community,” Breneman said. “We look for ways to help them. We see the medical records piece becoming more and more important as the new health care regulations roll out. This is something we can do with our IT people with the help of the foundation in monetary support.”

While no firm date is in place, Moritz believe the conversion would take place some time over the summer.

Amazon updates kindle software

April 30th, 2010

Amazon has announced a software upgrade for its Kindle e-book reader. There are a few nice additions, such as the ability to organise your books into collections, but what got my attention was the ability to share passages from books into Facebook and Twitter.

I like that idea and I’d enjoy reading shared passages from my Facebook friends.

Going further, Amazon will allow you to see “what the Kindle community thinks are the most interesting passages in the books you’re reading”. I’m not sure I’d want to do that while I was reading a book but I’d probably go back and look through the most commonly shared passages once I’d finished.

I hope this is the first step in Amazon doing more with its Kindle data, an idea I discussed at the beginning of the month.

In time management launches project management software community for resource sharing

April 28th, 2010

In Time Management announced today the hallmark launch of their new website http://pm-software.org, a free project management software community. At last, project managers can now easily choose the best application for their business needs, with the help of an independent peer to peer network.

The website is a portal for providing and sharing information and resources on project management software. It enables registered users to submit product listings, screenshots, videos, reviews and articles, about any resource related to project management.

Through the interactive platform, pm-software.org combines the power of a networking community with the largest online directory of project management software. Now, there is no need to make expensive mistakes in choosing the wrong application. The new platform makes it easy to choose the right product, which helps save on costs and time, and reduces risks.

Pm-software.org houses over 500 applications, ranging from free desktop tools to enterprise-wide portfolio management systems. Any member can add tools to the directory. Once submitted, entries are reviewed by an editor and compared to the software tool manufacturer’s own website descriptions. In case of discrepancies, editors adjust the information provided and further verify the application by testing against member’s claims.

The highlight of the community, User Reviews, represent members views on project management software tools on the market today. Free-form reviews on the pros and cons of each product allow for open critiques, and a star-rating system shows opinion scores based on a range of criteria. Not to mention, members are also alerted about new reviews, when they happen.
A second key feature includes an advanced search function of application listings in the website’s database. Members are able to easily target product specific features by selecting appropriate properties by category, vendor, software architecture, operating system and license type.

Pm-software.org does not influence the choice of tools or services that appears on the website. “The website is completely independent from any vendor and it is driven by the community. We have no advertising contracts with, nor do we have a business relationship with or are dependent on any tool manufacturers,” said Thomas Brandstetter, co-founder of In Time Management.

“The portal finances itself exclusively through the use of Google advertising. Any hidden advertisements disguised as extremely one-sided representations in User Reviews are blocked and we ensure this independence, particularly through our Editor Reviews.”
