CMS selects ICD-10 conversion software

September 13th, 2011

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has selected ICD-10 code translation technology from 3M Health Information Systems to assist the federal agency in converting systems, applications, and reports based on ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes into ICD-10 language.

The code translation tool from 3M will be used by CMS to streamline code translations and support ICD-10 transition planning at CMS headquarters in Baltimore.

CMS also licensed the software for use by its Fiscal Intermediaries (FIs), Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) and carriers to promote translations from ICD-9 to ICD-10 in all of the CMS systems.

ICD-10 will replace ICD-9 as the nation’s coding standard beginning Oct. 1, 2013. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, ICD-9 no longer meets the needs of today’s healthcare system because of its limited ability to accommodate new procedures and diagnoses.

The ICD-10 code translation technology is a web-based application that supports code conversion of large, complex information systems and creates customized code mappings for clinical and business needs at large health systems and stand-alone community hospitals.

CMS Required to Implement Anti-Fraud Software with “Predictive Modeling” By Next Year

October 1st, 2010

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is required to implement new billing technology with “predictive modeling” by next year that will better prevent fraud from occurring, according to a Miami Herald news report.

The anti-fraud provision is a component of the Small Business Lending Act that President Obama signed into law Monday, which means Medicare will have to end its 45-year tradition of paying claims without verifying them, according to the report.

Under the anti-fraud provision, the new billing software CMS must implement is required to have predictive modeling, a type of analytics that is already being used in the credit card industry to identify potential fraud. CMS is also required to start a competitive bidding process by January for contractors of predictive modeling software and to have the technology implemented in 10 states with the highest incidence of Medicare fraud by July, according to the report.

Medicare billing contractors would use the new technology to process claims for hospitalization and outpatient services, which make up the majority of the federal program’s costs, according to the report.

The Department of Health & Human Services’ Office of Inspector General will report the actual savings achieved through the new technology to Congress after one year of operation, according to the report.
