Centrix Software Strikes Alliance with Atlantis Computing to Address VDI Storage Challenge

February 14th, 2012

Centrix Software, a leading provider of workspace computing solutions, today announced it has joined forces with Atlantis Computing, the leader in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) storage and performance optimization solutions, to help organizations accurately size and reduce the cost of storage requirements for large-scale desktop virtualization deployments.

Many IT organizations are unaware that the major expense of VDI is not software or server hardware, but storage. As much as 80% of the cost of implementing a conventional VDI environment is for the storage infrastructure needed to support implementations that meet user expectations. Conventional SAN/NAS storage systems can only deliver the data throughput (IOPS) needed to support VDI by increasing the number of storage drives and controllers well beyond that needed to deliver the required disk space. As virtual desktop IO traffic is significantly more than physical desktops, storage can often be undersized for VDI installations leading to performance and budget issues, and projects stalling when these deployments move from pilot phase to production.

As part of this new alliance, Centrix Software and Atlantis Computing will work together to help organizations optimize the delivery of virtual desktops, providing solutions that ensure storage infrastructure costs are minimized and high performance levels are achieved when scaling VDI.

– With Centrix WorkSpace iQ, an analytics solution for end-user computing environments, Centrix Software provides unprecedented and unique levels of visibility on IOPS activity and detailed analysis on the impact of user session concurrency on a virtual desktop infrastructure. The information it delivers enables accurate sizing of storage architecture based on platform usage and service consumption patterns as well as continuous analysis of the VDI environment.

– Atlantis Computing enables organizations to scale their VDI without having to invest in unnecessary storage resources. Its Atlantis ILIO solution is designed specifically for VDI workloads and as a result, reduces the amount of traffic going to storage by up to 90 percent and decreases the storage capacity required by up to 99 percent. The impact is a dramatic reduction in the cost of the virtual desktop and a large boost in desktop performance.

“To gain the best performance and value from VDI, organizations have to be able to track the impact of service usage and consumption patterns on the supporting infrastructure. Greater visibility on IOPS is essential if storage is to be sized and managed correctly,” said Paul Burke, director of product management at Centrix Software. “By working closely with Atlantis Computing, we are pleased to be adding value to its pioneering work around storage optimization as we help organizations accelerate the delivery of successful virtual desktops projects.”

“Centrix WorkSpace iQ is unique in its ability to track IOPS loads at a granular level including boot sessions, providing valuable intelligence that can be used for defining the impact of VDI deployments on the storage architecture and identifying where optimization is needed to curtail costs,” said Bernard Harguindeguy, chief executive officer of Atlantis Computing. “Our alliance with Centrix Software builds on our quest to help organizations eliminate the storage challenge around VDI and benefit in faster time from their virtualization investments.”

Centrix Software introduces cloud-based version of WorkSpace iQ™, helps organisations increase readiness for Windows 7

October 20th, 2011

Centrix Software, a leading provider of unified end-user computing solutions, today announced the release of a host of new features for its end-user computing analytics product Centrix WorkSpace iQ at IPEXPO, London. The latest version delivers new reporting capabilities that enable organisations to streamline the delivery of desktop transformation projects and operate infrastructure optimally. In addition, the company also announced the availability of WorkSpace iQ as a cloud-based service, enabling customers to benefit from rich, deep end-user computing analytics without the need for supporting in-house infrastructure.

WorkSpace iQ gives organisations the ability to see how IT services are really being used across their infrastructures. With deeper visibility on actual IT consumption patterns organisations can reduce the cost of managing and maintaining software, manage desktop transformation more efficiently and make more informed decisions about new IT investments, strategies and IT sourcing methods. New features in Centrix WorkSpace iQ 5.2 include:

•Windows 7 Migration Assessment Reporting – organisations can reduce compatibility issues by up to 90% by determining upfront what is required to migrate users or groups and where to focus application remediation efforts. Reports also determine hardware compatibility to run Windows 7.

•Management Dashboard – organisations can obtain a high level view of metrics about hardware, software, and users and can continually track the operational efficiency of the end-user computing infrastructure. The Management Dashboard also allows the ability to slice and dice data to cover a whole company, departments, groups or individuals and to drill down into the details behind the summary views.

•User Profile Reports – provides a complete assessment of personal settings and environment variables for each user so that IT can migrate the appropriate startup application settings based on individual requirements. Organisations can also import user attributes from Active Directory and HR systems to enable better user grouping and support the alignment of IT services with enterprise processes and workflows.

•Resource Consumption Intensity Reporting – analyses the resource consumption profile and intensity for every application session, so that IT can define intense, standard and light resource users and plan their transformation projects with these in mind.

•User Experience Impact Report – quantifies peak logon loads for groups of users so that IT can plan effective I/O requirements in particular for virtual desktop environments to accommodate peak loads such as boot storms.

To enable organisations to benefit from WorkSpace iQ without the need for on-premise infrastructure, WorkSpace iQ is now available as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering. Leveraging the Microsoft Azure platform, the SaaS version of WorkSpace iQ provides secure encrypted and protected data capture, delivery and storage as a subscription service. WorkSpace iQ will continue to be available as an on-premise solution option.

“Organisations planning desktop migrations often have little knowledge about their users’ requirements, significantly increasing risk of business disruption or project failure,” said Michael Silver, VP Distinguished Analyst at Gartner. “Better intelligence is critical to ensuring migrations advance user and business needs rather than interfering with them.”

“By knowing more about the dynamics of their end-user computing environments and how IT assets are actually being used, desktop and application teams are able to make more accurate, more informed business and technology decisions about applications and desktop change,” said Richard Pegden, Director of Product Marketing at Centrix Software. “By taking a user-centric approach to desktop transformation with WorkSpace iQ, organisations can ensure faster business return from new technology investments while optimising their environments for cost savings and greater business efficiency.”

Centrix software Demonstrates AppCentral at IPExpo

October 21st, 2010

Centrix Software today previewed its new AppCentral feature for Centrix WorkSpace Universal at the IPExpo event in London. AppCentral enables organisations to centrally aggregate and track applications distributed across multiple technology platforms and start the journey towards an IT-as-a-service sourcing strategy.

Part of the Centrix WorkSpace 5™ product suite, AppCentral provides a host of features for provisioning IT-as-a-service, including:

• A service catalogue for tracking application assets deployed across the enterprise
• Self service capabilities that allow end-users to gain secure, single sign-on access to their applications and services through a browser
• A seamless consumer cloud experience for the end-user, regardless of where the application is being run
• Reporting features that show corporate IT decision-makers the least cost sourcing option for delivering an application based on user consumption patterns.

“With the emergence of cloud computing, the question for corporate IT decision-makers, and those responsible for implementations, is no longer should we buy and install IT services, it is how we can subscribe and consume,” said Lisa Hammond, CEO of Centrix Software. “The way a company manages its IT sourcing across all business functions will become indistinguishable from the organisation’s competitive strategy. Smart organisations will have to look at the entire spectrum of sourcing options from a strategic standpoint, reinventing their IT service delivery by drawing together the right capabilities from the right sources at the right time. Achieving this will require access to information from across the IT infrastructure based on what users are really consuming from IT, and the IT intelligence to act on this data.”

Creating an IT as a Service framework

Centrix WorkSpace 5 enables organisations to create a service framework around the sourcing and delivery of applications and desktops to end-users. It focuses on moving IT from a “buy and install” approach to a “subscribe and consume” model and can be applied to any IT environment or technology platform. With Centrix WorkSpace 5, corporate IT can take a best-fit approach for their enterprise IT requirements, selecting the best technologies for delivering applications to users in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

Centrix WorkSpace 5 is made up of three products that share one platform, the Centrix Interconnect Platform, or CIP:

• Centrix WorkSpace Discovery™ – a free tool that shows organisations the application assets that are installed on their desktops, and how they are being used. It supports the development of initial business case arguments for technology adoption, as well as potential areas for cost savings and optimisation of IT.

• Centrix WorkSpace iQ™ – provides a platform for discovering, monitoring and metering IT assets and service consumption across an organisation’s IT environment. Enterprises can use this data to assess the business value of IT assets and services, and develop chargeback processes. This enables corporate IT to apply an IT as a Service approach to their existing environments.

• Centrix WorkSpace Universal™ – presents users with a single view of their applications and IT assets from wherever they are hosted. IT can identify the cost of sourcing and delivering applications, while the end-user can access the applications they need. WorkSpace Universal provides an Adobe Flash-based Rich Internet Application portal, as well as now supporting access through HTML browsers.

Centrix out to export UK success

October 20th, 2010

Centrix Software has set its sights on developing a channel in mainland Europe and building on the success of its partner recruitment efforts in the UK.

The application monitoring software vendor has 21 UK partners and has now decided to turn its attention to the rest of the continent.

Lewis Gee, vice president for worldwide sales at Centrix, said: “We have very little
coverage in the rest of Europe and have decided to dip our toe in the water to see how much appetite there is for our products there.”

The firm recently launched an updated version of its WorkSpace 5 software suite, which is designed to give IT departments an insight into users’ application usage.

This information is then used to determine which applications to migrate as part of
virtual desktop deployments.

To support the launch, Gee said the firm is also planning to add a further four or five partners in the UK over the next two quarters.

“This time around the focus is on bringing on board the larger systems integrators and partners who are in a position to add services on top of selling the product,” said Gee.

Kelly Layton, marketing director at Centrix partner Cetus Solutions, said: “The market for desktop virtualisation is gathering pace throughout Europe, so I think now is a great time for Centrix to be turning their attention that way.”
