The crash of Air Traffic Control (ATC) system-Autotrack III-in Delhi earlier this week bodes bad news for Mumbai airport as well.

The system, an upgraded version of Autotrack II which is currently in use, was to be installed at Mumbai airport by August after it had stabilised in Delhi. However, as Delhi has now gone back to the old system, the chances of it being used in Mumbai are slim.

Autotrack III crashed at Delhi airport on July 28 disrupting flight operations for 30 minutes. Officials at Mumbai were also being trained to use the system once it was consolidated in Delhi. “Now, the fate of the system hangs in balance. Everyone was working towards installing it. However, it seems like a far cry after the failure in Delhi,” an Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said.

Autotrack III is an advanced software which could have helped a complex airspace like Mumbai organise its traffic. The system has an integrated terminal manager which can help sequence flights at the airport. “Currently, it is done manually at Mumbai and is very time consuming. The new system would have made it easier, especially as there are many over-lapping slots in Mumbai,” an airport official said.

The system was likely to take care of black-outs due to power failure. “Even while the radar fails, the system can continue to show the positioning of aircraft and their details. Currently, in case of radar failure, the screen goes blank and the controller has to vaguely assess the position and distance of various aircraft,” an ATC official said.

ATC-NY has released its latest tool to fight cyber crime – P2P Marshal “Field Edition,” which runs from a USB drive. P2P Marshal is a computer forensics tool which automatically detects, extracts and analyzes P2P evidence on hard drives. The software-only version, “Forensic Edition,” is installed and runs on an investigator’s workstation to analyze a mounted disk image.

P2P Marshal Field Edition runs on a Windows target machine from a USB drive. It can conduct live investigations as well as analyze mounted disk images. Field Edition allows an investigator to go mobile as the USB drive may be moved from computer to computer – no installation is required. This allows an investigator to conduct forensic searches out in the field, offering freedom of movement and capabilities on a target computer where P2P Marshal can investigate that computer’s hard drive.

P2P Marshal automatically detects and analyzes peer-to-peer file sharing usage including the most commonly used P2P client programs such as Ares, BitTorrent, Frostwire, LimeWire, uTorrent and Azureus Vuze.

P2P Marshal presents per-user information on those clients, including shared files, downloaded files, peer servers and configuration and log information. P2P Marshal performs these tasks in a forensically valid way and presents the results in an easily readable form on screen and can produce reports in CSV, RTF, PDF and HTML formats.

ATC-NY developed P2P Marshal in conjunction with the National Institute of Justice. For information about the Field Edition.

ATC-NY offers a one-day course in peer-to-peer forensics and P2P Marshal. Contact training@p2pmarshal.com for information about course locations and dates.

P2P Marshal is currently being used by local, state, federal and international law enforcement to investigate cyber crimes. Without automated tools, a forensic investigator’s job to find evidence of illegal file sharing and distribution is manually intensive and time-consuming. P2P Marshal greatly helps investigators reduce the time required for the analysis process. The tool is also useful to private corporations for compliance checking. A company that prohibits peer-to-peer software on its corporate systems could use P2P Marshal to confirm such compliance.

Motivated by a lack of forensic tools to acquire evidence from network devices in the field, ATC released the Router Marshal forensic tool on March 4, 2010. Router Marshal automatically acquires digital forensic evidence from network devices such as routers and wireless access points. An investigator can use the Router Marshal software in the field to identify a network device, automatically acquire volatile forensic evidence from the device, and view and interpret this evidence.
ATC-NY, a wholly owned subsidiary of Architecture Technology Corporation, developed Router Marshal with the support of a grant from the U.S. National Institute of Justice (NIJ). Working with partners in law enforcement, ATC-NY designed Router Marshal to follow forensic best practices and maintain a detailed log file of all activities it performs. It produces reports in RTF, PDF, and HTML formats, and runs on Windows and Linux-based analysis machines.
