The battle was fought on September 17th, 1862 along the Antietam Creek, near the small farming community of Sharpsburg, Maryland. It was part of General Robert E. M’sia needs to produce own cyber security software

December 28th, 2011

Malaysia needs to produce its own cyber information security software as depending on foreign software may risk information leaks and intelligence breaches, said a software expert here today.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty dean Prof Dr Ramlan Mahmod said infiltration could happen covertly as currently there was a lack of understanding on source code logic streams used by foreign software.

“At the moment, there is no software capable of checking the source code of software to ensure the software used is confirmed safe.

“For the realisation of this information technology, the country needs to acquire ‘technical knowhow’ in information security and expertise in various fields such as computer science, mathematics and engineering,” he told Bernama.

He said to acquire the expertise, the nation needed to carry out the foundation work such as training more experts in information technology and by bringing in more external technologies into the country.

Dr Ramlan said information leaks could happen in two situations, that is when the data was in transmission and hacking of existing data in storage.

“To prevent hackers from attacking data in transmission or unauthorised access to data storage, the information could be encrypted or hidden.

“This is the basis of information and software development important to ensure our cyber defence,” he said.

He said the government needed to play a major role to set up a strong system of cyber defence as it needed financial commitment, expertise, legislation and continuous monitoring.

“Cyber security is the same as national security involving many operational aspects such as prevention, defence, detecting, intelligence and attack.

“It also needs sophiscated technical knowledge in information security and continuous upgrading of capability considering hackers are also improving their attacks,” he said.

Walt Disney to launch delisting offer for UTV Software on January 16

December 28th, 2011

US-based Walt Disney will launch an offer for delisting shares of media and entertainment firm UTV Software Communications from Indian bourses on January 16 next year.

Walt Disney plans to delist about 1.22 crore shares, representing 29.96 per cent of UTV Software’s equity, and the offer price for the shareholders has been fixed between Rs 835.03-1,000 a share, Walt Disney said in an advertisement published today.

The offer opens on January 16 and will close on January 20, it added.

UTV currently holds an over 50 per cent stake in UTV Software.

In July this year, Walt Disney Co had offered to buy out stakes held by public shareholders and other promoters of the company. The government has also approved the proposal, which is expected to result in FDI inflows amounting to about Rs 8,250 crore.

Post-delisting, Walt Disney is likely to hold a 80.25 per cent stake in the company if it successfully acquires the shares of all public stakeholders, while the remaining equity would be held by RS Group.

However, assuming that Disney acquires the shares of UTV Software’s other promoter as well, pursuant to a share purchase agreement, Disney will secure a 100 per cent stake in the company, the advertisement said.

Diskeeper 2011 Home with Hyperfast: utility software

December 28th, 2011

Diskeeper 2011 is a utility for defragmenting hard disks that replaces the standard built-in Windows disk defragmenter. The company has plenty of experience in this area, as it supplied the technology for the defragmenter included with Windows XP.
A fragmented file is one in which the data it contains has been spread around widely separated parts of the hard disk, making the file slower to open when it’s needed. If too many of a PC’s files are fragmented, overall performance can slow down dramatically.
Although all Windows versions include a disk defragmenter, it can only be run manually. Diskeeper 2011 runs constantly in the background, preventing files and folders from becoming fragmented in the first place. Manual defragmentation can also be done at any time.
It was very simple to install, and the program automatically configured itself to enable protection on all available hard disks, although these settings can be changed later if needed. The version we tested included Hyperfast, which can defragment solid state disks (SSDs ), including USB memory keys. These cannot be safely defragmented with normal defragmentation tools, so if you use these it could be a useful tool. If not, choosing the standard version without Hyperfast saves around £6.
There are few settings to change, but users can choose which hard disks to defragment and whether to use automatic defragmentation or not. For the majority of users there should be no need to change anything, and we found that after a day or two our PC’s hard disks were completely defragmented (we confirmed this with other defragmentation tools). The program replaces and disables the Windows defragmenter, so there’s no chance of conflicts. It took up very few system resources and doesn’t even install a taskbar icon, so in use it is completely transparent.
The main menu was quite confusing, with lots of performance statistics and graphs, but these are quite technical and don’t really serve much purpose except to convince users that the program is working properly.
Despite that, Diskeeper 2011 does an excellent job, and is a great way of keeping the files on a PC’s hard disk optimised with the minimum of effort.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer gets a software update, sadly not ICS

December 28th, 2011

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer (the original tablet, the Transformer Prime‘s predecessor) has just received a software update. And it isn’t going to make your tablet run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, sadly. But if you own a Transformer, you really shouldn’t lose hope. That’s because so far Asus has been the best when it comes to Android tablet OS updates, so there’s no reason to think that the original Transformer won’t be the first (or second, if its successor has a say in this) tablet to be updated to ICS. Perhaps all that’s needed here is a little bit more patience.

Back to the update. It’s a minor affair, containing bug fixes and various performance enhancements. After you apply it, your tablet will be on software version 8.6.5.21, and Android version 3.2.1.

If you have root access on your Transformer, it’s best to refrain from updating until your favorite developers verify that you won’t loose root by doing so.

The update naturally is of the over-the-air variety – no computer needed to download and install it. If you manually check for updates, it should be there waiting for you even if your tablet hasn’t yet notified you that it’s available.
