Libero deploys Joyent’s software to launch on-demand public cloud offering

November 30th, 2011

Businesses and developers can access real time infrastructure resources with pay as you go pricing model

Italy-based portal and Internet service provider Libero is implementing cloud computing software and service provider Joyent’s SmartDataCenter services to launch the on-demand public cloud offering.

With Libero’s public cloud, businesses and developers can access a full line of cloud-based offerings, running applications faster and can access real time infrastructure resources with a pay as you go pricing model.

In addition, businesses and developers can allow Libero to run their infrastructure while they focus their human and capital resources on their main line of business and will find that their infrastructure stays up 100% of the time.

SmartDataCenter enables more efficient use of compute, I/O and network resources; businesses benefit from these efficiencies by paying less for their Libero infrastructure than for other competitive providers and provides local, resilient storage.

Joyent EMEA president Philippe Weppe said the relationship combines the strength of Libero’s IT and online service capabilities with Joyent’s cloud computing infrastructure.

“Customers will benefit greatly from the efficiency, flexibility and quality of the Libero cloud,” said Weppe.

Libero CEO Antonio Converti said Libero wishes to serve clients with any type of cloud computing need.

“Our service also excels at providing highly scalable, performant and efficient computing resources on a temporary basis, such as for massive data analysis, research and development projects, or peek data processing times at month’s end,” said Converti.

Software Developed To Harmonise Implementation Of Rio Convention

November 30th, 2011

The Project Coordinating Unit (PCU) of the Ghana Environmental Conventions Coordinating Authority (GECCA) has developed software to link-up agencies and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) working on environment related issues.

The software, called dBase Manager, is to help to ensure effective implementation of projects under the Rio Conventions, which cover the areas of climate change, bio-diversity and environmental degradation. Consequently, the PCU of GECCA, which operates under the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, organised a day’s workshop in Tamale in the Northern Region, to enhance the capacity of stakeholders, especially civil society groups in the northern part of the country, on database management, yesterday.

The workshop was also to create opportunity for the PCU to collate data on activities related to the Rio Conventions.

A component of the GECCA project relates to access to and sharing of data and information among stakeholders on activities and programmes directly or indirectly related to Rio Conventions through the establishment of database and capacity building on database management.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr Raymond Babanawo, technical assistant at the Ministry, called on environment related NGOs and stakeholders to embrace the system to prevent duplication of work.

He said due to the down-turn of European and American economies, most donor agencies are considering cutting down sponsorship for projects in developing countries.

Dr Babanawo said this called for harmonization of activities to reduce cost, to ensure good results and value for money to the benefit of the people.

BlackBerry maker RIM to offer security features on iPhone, Androids with Mobile Fusion software

November 30th, 2011

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion is seeking to cash in as companies switch to rival smartphones with a new tool that offers some of its important security features for sexier devices like the iPhone.

The company said on Tuesday that it will launch its new Mobile Fusion device management software in the first quarter, allowing corporate IT staff to set and monitor rules for passwords, apps and software on a range of devices, including Apple’s iPad and iPhone, and smartphones using Google’s Android operating system.

A company can remotely lock or wipe a lost or stolen device, a key selling point for security-conscious corporations who may have been wary of shifting away from the BlackBerry.

“What our enterprise customers are looking for, and the opportunity for us, is to become the de facto platform,” RIM’s vice-president for enterprise product management, Alan Panezic, told Reuters in an interview ahead of the announcement.

“We will take full advantage of whatever security capabilities are provided by the core operating system. We’re not going to hold that back in any way, shape or form.”

RIM’s BlackBerry was for years the preferred device for businesses and government agencies, who treasured its encrypted data and distributed the device to millions of workers needing secure, round-the-clock email access.

But many workers now prefer using their own Apple and Android-powered devices to access corporate emails, raising security questions for corporations that RIM hopes to address with the new software.

Mobile Fusion will sit next to existing BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES) behind corporate firewalls.

Panezic said the software will manage RIM’s PlayBook independently from a BlackBerry after the tablet – which has yet to gain traction with either business or consumer clients – receives a long-awaiting software upgrade, due in February.

He declined to give any pricing details for the Fusion service, but said it would be “competitive” with rivals.

“It will help stem the tide of those companies that may have considered eliminating their BES but it won’t help sell more phones,” said Gartner analyst Phillip Redman. “That’s what they really need to do.”

The new software follows on from RIM’s May acquisition of device management company Ubitexx, which RIM announced in May.

Smaller companies such as Good Technology, MobileIron and BoxTone already offer device management as companies fret about leakage of sensitive commercial information.

“This will definitely rattle some cages” among smaller companies, filling a niche by securing and managing iPhones and other non-BlackBerry devices for corporations, Forrester analyst Christian Kane said.

Panezic said customers had requested a solution to handle Apple and Android devices, but RIM would consider adding support for other systems, such as Microsoft’s Windows Phone, if there was enough demand.

RIM shares closed 3 percent higher at $16.48 on Nasdaq on Monday. They have fallen more than 70 percent this year.

Yandex buys mobile software maker SPB Software

November 30th, 2011

Yandex, the most popular search engine in Russia, on Monday said it bought mobile software maker SPB Software as it grows its mobile business.

No price was given for the deal.

SPB Software, which is headquartered in St. Petersburg, Russia, makes software for smartphones and tablets. Yandex said it will integrate its “cloud” services into SPB’s software, and its search engine will be accessible on a variety of mobile devices after the acquisition.

Yandex also said buying SPB could help it partner with other companies involved in Internet-enabled mobile devices.

“Mobile is a vital part of our growth strategy. The acquisition of SPB Software creates new market potential for us and a plethora of possibilities for innovative solutions for our partners,” said Yandex CEO Arkady Volozh in a statement.

Yandex last week said that it would be the default search engine on phones running the Windows operating system in Russia.

The company also operates in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Turkey.

Shares rose $1.32, or 6.7 percent, to $21.07 in afternoon trading. The broader market was up sharply, with the Standard & Poor’s 500 index gaining 3 percent.

Yandex went public in May at $25 per share.

SEC’s own surveillance software soon

November 29th, 2011

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is going to launch its own surveillance software soon to strengthen monitoring system over the daily trading affairs of stock market.

The much-awaited capital market watching software is the first one to be installed under SEC.

At present, the commission has no surveillance software of its own, rather it is using another one installed by Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), a source in the SEC said.

The commission has already called tender and so far six companies have dropped their tenders within November 10, the last date of its submission.

Now, the tenders are being reviewed by the authorities to find out the best one, the commission sources confirmed.

Of the six bidders, some are foreign companies and some are combined of local and foreign institutions.

The installation is being implemented under “Improvement of Capital Market Governance Project” of Tk 150 million, jointly funded by the Bangladesh government and Asian Development Bank (ADB), the sources noted.

The ADB is giving its fund as loan.

Implementation of the project, which includes some other components except the surveillance software, is scheduled to be completed by April 12 next year, the sources said, adding that the deadline might be extended, if necessary.

The SEC, however, expected that installation of the surveillance software will be completed as soon as possible.

With development of its own surveillance software, the SEC will be stronger to ensure better supervision, monitor and transparency in the capital market, an SEC official said.

After the recent stock market scam started, different sections of stakeholders criticised the absence of own surveillance software of SEC.

Expanded Functionality of ZEN Imaging Software

November 29th, 2011

Carl Zeiss has now expanded the ZEN software suite to drive all ZEISS light microscope systems. Users can experience one identical software interface for all their microscopy experiments. This offers synergies for research institutes using several microscopy technologies. The software meets the requirements of various user groups with different software packages: ZEN pro, ZEN lite and ZEN desk module packages.

At the heart of ZEN is Smart Setup. Users select the fluorophores used in their samples, Smart Setup features intelligent functions that suggest a few different configurations appropriate for the fluorophores in the sample. Users can then decide which parameters to optimize for their experiments, such as image acquisition or maximum resolution. Smart Setup automatically configures the system based on this input.
Dr. Horst Wolff, Product Manager for imaging software at Carl Zeiss, remembers: “As a cell biologist, I always wanted a software solution that would control my microscope intelligently, do all settings automatically and therefore give me more time for my research.”

ZEN 2011 is optimized for recording several gigabytes of large image data sets. The software can store high-speed dual camera time lapse series synchronously and reliably on the interlocked hard disk drives. Image stacks, time lapse series or tile images are saved together with the recording date of the system in the .czi format. Image processing modules generate 3D projections and export them as rendering or a film sequence.
