Software Solutions Company, Parse3, Launches New Web Presence for the California HealthCare Foundation

October 29th, 2011

Software solutions company Parse3 announces the launch of a new flagship website for nonprofit philanthropy, the California HealthCare Foundation. After recently creating and implementing a plan for a more unified and autonomous hosting environment for all of CHCF’s associated websites, Parse3 turned its attention to the complete redesign of the highly visited California HealthCare Foundation website, CHCF.org.

The new website, built in conjunction with award-winning agency Project6 Design, provides a more engaging online gathering place for grantees with its new graphics, site architecture and user interface. CHCF administrators now enjoy the ability to enter, synchronize and distribute a large library of content through multiple marketing channels. This synching of information supports multiple touch points for the “Ideas and Innovations” messages provided by CHCF to site users and grantees.

Sitecore’s comprehensive CMS was utilized for the redesign because of its sophisticated content management and robust customer relationship attributes. Its modular attributes allowed for creating distinct building blocks so that web pages could be truly unique yet share content in a variety of ways. As always, the need for a user-friendly control panel for administrators is satisfied by Sitecore’s intuitive and familiar framework.

New IBM Software Helps Analyze The World’s Data For Healthcare Transformation

October 29th, 2011

IBM recently introduced new software for the healthcare industry to help health care providers and payers improve patient care and reduce costs. The new software offering uses content analytics similar to what is found in IBM’s Watson technology.

Seton Healthcare Family is the first client to adopt and use the technology, called IBM Content and Predictive Analytics for Healthcare. The solution will allow healthcare organizations to extract relevant clinical information from vast amounts of patient data to better analyze the past, understand the present, and predict future outcomes.

By combining IBM’s Watson technology with industry solutions offerings, Seton intends to focus the new content and predictive analytics solution on the root causes of hospital readmissions, and ways it can decrease preventable multiple hospital visits.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, one in five patients suffer from preventable readmissions, which represents $17.4B of the current $102.6B Medicare budget. Beginning in 2012, hospitals will be penalized for high readmission rates with reductions in Medicare discharge payments.

“IBM Content and Predictive Analytics for Healthcare uses the same type of natural language processing as IBM Watson, enabling us to leverage our unstructured information in new ways not possible before,” said Charles J. Barnett, FACHE, President/Chief Executive Officer, Seton Healthcare Family. “With this solution, we can access an integrated view of relevant clinical and operational information to drive more informed decision making. For example, by predicting readmission candidates, we can reduce costly and preventable readmissions, decrease mortality rates, and ultimately improve the quality of life for our patients.”

Most healthcare organizations are drowning in data but are challenged to gain reliable, actionable insights from this information. In fact, more than 80 percent of an institution’s data today is unstructured. In healthcare, this is in the form of physician notes, registration forms, discharge summaries, documents and more is doubling every five years. Different from machine- ready data, this content lacks structure and is arduous for healthcare enterprises to include in business analysis and therefore is routinely left out. As a result, millions of patient notes and records often sit unavailable in separate clinical data silos. This content contains valuable information, but there’s historically been no easy way to analyze it.

IBM Content and Predictive Analytics for Healthcare enables doctors and healthcare professionals to go far beyond traditional search and analysis of unstructured data. They can advance diagnosis and treatment by accurately extracting medical facts and understanding relationships buried in large volumes of clinical and operational data. The IBM solution transforms raw information into healthcare insight quickly by revealing trends, patterns, deviations and predicting the probability of outcomes, allowing organizations to derive insight in minutes versus weeks or months, or not at all. As a result, healthcare professionals can find more effective ways to care for high-risk patients, provide safer patient care, and develop new models for reimbursement for quality care.

The new IBM solution gives clinical and other knowledge workers and executives several ways to interact with analyzed information including searching, exploring, mining, monitoring and reporting. It delivers a set of proven technologies that meet the rigorous standards and requirements of the healthcare community. The software is also compatible with IBM’s Health Integration Framework, which means healthcare organizations can realize more value from existing information system investments such as data warehouse, business intelligence, master data management and advanced case management.

IBM is offering new content and predictive solution services through its Business Analytics and Optimization initiatives, which includes a new center of competence for UIMA-based text analysis solutions. This center of competence draws on resources from IBM Global Services, IBM Software Lab Services, and the IBM jStart emerging technology team.

IBM Content and Predictive Analytics for Healthcare is optimized to run on IBM Power Systems, which are designed for high throughput and complex analysis of structured and unstructured data. Built on the foundation of IBM POWER7 processor technology, Power Systems are available at many different price points and can be tailor fit for purpose and rapidly deployed for a broad range of customer environments with leadership performance, ease of management and efficiency.

Medford software company creates mobile device game

October 29th, 2011

The reconstituted Trilobyte Games LLC announced creation of “Diddly,” a trivia game for mobile devices with Apple operating systems.

The Medford software company says “Diddly” fills a void in the mobile applications market for a well-produced trivia challenge.

“We believe that the key to a successful trivia game is extremely clever and witty questions, presented in an attractive, simple and user-friendly way,” said game designer and Chief Executive Officer Rob Landeros.
“Diddly” is aimed at trivia buffs who enjoy wrapping their minds around double entendre, subtext and subtlety, Landeros said.

Trilobyte Games plans to fund its latest venture through a Kickstarter campaign — using volunteers on the Internet to raise $25,000 for the project. Kickstarter efforts now are the second most common way to fund movies and books, company spokesman Charlie McHenry said.

“It’s a very cool deal that eliminates (venture capitalist) or investor middle-men, so we’re not beholden to a Menlo Park firm, and we don’t have to share our profits with investors,” McHenry said. “We’re given 60 days to raise our $25,000 target. If we’re not successful, no dollars change hands. Contributors make pledges and Kickstarter keeps 5 percent of successful projects for the use of their platform.”

For more on the Kickstarter campaign, see http://goo.gl/f6uoS.

Even if the Kickstarter avenue fails, McHenry said the company will follow through with the project. “We’ll fund this game one way or the other,” he said. “If Kickstarter fails us — and we’re anticipating success — we’ll find a small investor who will take a royalty to fund development.”

Unlike the original Trilobyte, whose computer games generated millions of dollars in sales in the 1990s, the new Trilobyte Games is seeking small niches in a highly fragmented industry.

“We’ve been working with contractors and collaborators,” McHenry said. “Our revenue has reflected the challenges of the Apple ecosystem, with 80,000 competing games. That is to say we’re iOS (Apple’s operating system for mobile devices) ‘thousandaires,’ not making the gazillions that gaming companies used to command.”

“Diddly” is the company’s fourth property and second ground-up development following “The 7th Guest: Infection.” Trilobyte also produced apps for “The 7th Guest” and “The 7th Guest Book of Secrets.”

“Diddly” can be played solo, face-to-face or remotely via the Internet. Players play a common game with an iPad used for the main display. Each player uses his or her own iPhone or iPad. Apple TV owners can use the television as the main display and play through their own mobile devices.

Trivia packs will be sold in-application or via iTunes. Regular new packs will be thematically based by general categories, age levels and special interests.
McHenry said Trilobyte has ventured into the e-book realm as well — trademarking the term appBook — and interactive film space.

The company has reached a license agreement for “Hollow Fields,” which will be made for iPad use, as will “Tender Loving Care,” Landeros’ 1995 film starring John Hurt.

ProComSol Adds Trending to DevCom2000 Software

October 29th, 2011

Today announced the release of Rev. 4.7 of their popular DevCom2000 Smart Device Communicator Software for HART instrumentation. This revision adds a trending feature which allows users to trend the parameters of HART devices. According to Jeffrey Dobos, President of ProComSol, Ltd, “The new trending feature will enable users to trend process variables as well as any other parameter associated with the device. This feature will provide valuable information to users as they configure or troubleshoot the performance of transmitters and control valves.”

Other improvements in Rev. 4.7 include the ability to easily add additional DD’s (Device Descriptions) to the DevCom2000 software and improved multi-drop configuration capability. The DevCom2000 software comes pre-loaded with all of the DD’s registered with the HART Communication Foundation. This enables users to deploy DevCom2000 right out of the box without the need to download DD’s from various instrumentation suppliers. However, sometimes a DD is needed from a device that has not yet been registered with the HART Communication Foundation. This feature enables users to easily add the required DD.

The improved multi-drop capability is important for users employing some of the new WirelessHART adapters on the market. Many of these adapters support transmitters in a multi-drop configuration in order to make the installation more economical. The improved multi-drop capability makes it easy to configure the WirelessHART adapters and associated transmitters.

Schwab Boosts Trade Monitoring Services With Compliance Software Deal

October 29th, 2011

Charles Schwab Corp. (SCHW) said it agreed to acquire Compliance11 Inc., a provider of regulatory compliance software, as the discount brokerage boosts its trade monitoring services for clients.

Schwab didn’t disclose financial terms of the transaction, but said the deal to acquire the Chicago firm would close in the fourth quarter of 2011, subject to customary closing conditions.

The San Francisco company expects to combine Compliance11’s technology with its own services, offered under Schwab’s Designated Brokerage Services business, or DBS.

Schwab, the largest discount brokerage in terms of client assets, provides trade monitoring technology to 650 corporate relationships, including financial services firms and investment advisers, who monitor over $30 billion in assets across 130,000 employee accounts.

The deal underscores the financial services industry’s increasing efforts to beef up compliance practices amid enhanced scrutiny from regulators.

Incidents, including the recent rogue-trading scandal at UBS AG (UBS, UBSN.VX), have shined a light on the monitoring policies of banks, where excessive risk-taking could mean heavy losses. In September, UBS said a London-based trader at the firm’s investment bank had lost $2.3 billion through unauthorized trades.

“A heightened regulatory focus and attention to corporate reputational risk create more reason than ever for firms to seek out efficient solutions to help meet their compliance obligations,” said Jim McCool, executive vice president and head of Institutional Services at Schwab, in a statement.

Lack of Android software support, visualized

October 29th, 2011

If you have ever owned an Android phone, you may have experienced a disturbing trend. It appears that, in the race to produce a phone that’s bigger, better, and faster than the previous, long-term software support often goes by the wayside. Even if you were already aware of this tendency, the above infographic may open your eyes to just how prevalent it is.

The creator of this visual tracked down every Android phone that was shipped to the US through the middle of 2010. All but two, the G1 and MyTouch, are still within their initial two-year contract periods (even for day one buyers) today. He then gathered data about the update history for all of these handsets.

We have summed up some of the highlights below, showing the percentages of the handsets surveyed and their corresponding software updates:

The chart also compared the phones to iOS. The iPhone 3GS, which is over two years and four months old already, is running the most current firmware, iOS 5. Obviously, it’s easier for Apple, who creates both the hardware and the software, to keep their annually-released iPhones up to date. But that still doesn’t change the fact that iPhone owners are running the latest and greatest, while many Android users aren’t.
Why?

Fragmentation is a word you hear bandied around a lot when referring to Android, and it’s appropriate to use it here as well. Android is, of course, the creation of Google. The open source software is then picked up by various manufacturers. Those hardware makers also often paste their own custom user interface on top of Android, which doesn’t simplify anything. Deals with carriers, including carrier-specific apps only complicate the situation further.

So while Apple is able to keep all of their updates seamlessly integrated within their walled garden, Google has little control over which Android phones receive updates. The phones that they do have some control over, the Nexus line (they develop those in conjunction with manufacturers to showcase major Android updates) does have a great track record. Yesterday’s news that the Nexus One will not be getting updated to Ice Cream Sandwich is actually the first case of a Google flagship phone being cut off from a major update.

That leaves it up to the manufacturers to stay on top of updates. In addition to the custom GUIs that they use, there is a race towards bigger, better, faster, stronger mania that the Android manufacturers are all competing in. If your flagship device from three months ago has already been trumped by four newer high-end Android handsets, then that relatively new phone is already an ancient relic in this supposed competition.

The only problem with that is that most people only update a phone every two years. If all of your resources are being poured into making sure you have the flavor of the week, then last week’s flavor doesn’t get much love. Last year’s flavor may as well be a fossil.

This is one area where the striking differences between iOS and Android tilt into Apple’s favor. I’m sure Google would love to have every Android phone running Gingerbread by now, but their open sourced, licensed approach to Android makes it nearly impossible for them to control.

I say ‘nearly’ because some would like to see Google take a harder stance on this issue with manufacturers. While Android is free for anyone to run, Google’s apps (Gmail, Google Voice, Navigation, etc.) are not. This is a key area that Google can bargain for more rigorous updating. Earlier this year, several manufacturers stood on their podiums and shouted they were going to be quicker with updates, but that has been a lot of hot air so far.
Devs to the rescue

One caveat to keep in mind here is that anyone who has rooted his Android phone is playing an entirely different ballgame. If you were to create a similar infographic which included stable custom ROMs from the development community, I would guess that Android’s update record would be much closer to iOS’. While many will never root their phones, those who do have a big-time advantage in terms of updated software. There are plenty of buggy ROMs that would provide an inferior experience, but the best work from the development community, particularly Cyanogenmod, can actually be preferable to running an official update.

I’d recommend you check out more at the source link below. The author, Michael Degusta, has done a wonderful job with this chart.
