Apple demotes PC with new mobile software

August 31st, 2011

Apple Inc.’s AAPL -0.41% next mobile operating system will make syncing a cinch.
Currently, owners of Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices connect their handhelds to a computer in order to transfer music, movies and photos. The process, called syncing, uses Apple’s jukebox software called iTunes.
With iOS 5, an upgrade to the mobile operating system that powers Apple’s handhelds, syncing will be a thing of the past. To do this, Apple is encouraging its customers to use cloud computing–the storage of information in Internet-accessible data centers–instead of space on a hard drive.
For example, if an iPhone user snaps a photo of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, the iOS 5-powered device will send it to iCloud, Apple’s cloud computing system. If the user than wants to look at the photo on his computer or iPad tablet, iCloud can deliver it to that machine.
With iOS 5, Apple aims to free its mobile products users from their computers and provide complete syncing across all of a users’ devices. A song purchased from an iPod Touch will be stored on iCloud, which launches in the autumn along with iOS 5, and delivered to the user’s iPhone and Mac computer. No cables are needed to transfer data.
The freedom from computers starts when someone takes a brand new Apple mobile device out of its box. Turn it on, adjust a few settings and the device is ready to download apps, surf the web and play movies. Previously, Apple’s mobile devices had to be connected to a computer before they could be used.
“You can set up and activate the device–on the device–and you’re ready to go,” said Scott Forstall, Apple’s mobile operating systems chief, when he announced iOS 5 at a conference in June. “We’re living in a post-PC world.”
An Apple spokeswoman said the company’s devices will also be able to receive software updates over the air, instead of through their computers as before.
Of course, not everyone will want to put their family photos in the cloud. Apple has a solution for that too. IOS 5 can talk wirelessly to computers on a home network, allowing material to be beamed to devices rather than transmitted via a cord.
Analysts note that Apple’s efforts bring it on par with devices powered by Google Inc.’s GOOG -0.52% Android software, a competing mobile operating system that is the most widely used platform for smartphones in the world. Android has offered similar functionality for years, they say.
“Apple refined that concept and made it their own,” said Gartner Inc. IT +0.70% analyst Mike McGuire, adding that Apple likely delayed the feature until now in order to make sure it was intuitive and free of bugs. “Removing the physical cable and being able to spread your content without a physical connection is a no-brainer.”
IOS 5 offers more than cloud computing.
The new operating system will let owners of Apple’s iPad 2 wirelessly transmit images to an Apple TV set-top-box. That will allow customers to display photos, apps or anything else on an HD television without plugging in a cord. Previously, Apple’s iPad 2 customers could plug their devices into televisions using a $39 adapter.
Apple will also allow customers to synchronize their calendars, contacts and email for free, using iCloud. Previously, it charged $99 per year for similar functionality under the soon-to-be-defunct Internet service, “MobileMe.”

Centrix Software plans US expansion after $10m investment

August 31st, 2011

Centrix Software is planning to expand its operations and put some cash into research and development of cloud and virtualisation products after securing $10m of investment.

The UK headquartered software firm is looking to establish Centrix Software Inc to grow its operations in the US using the funds extending its channel network, which it has been building already in America.

Lisa Hammond, CEO at Centrix Software, said that the funding came at a good time because a lot of customers were looking for help working out where they should be investing and software that helped measure IT consumption was useful.

Teradici Delivers Protocol Enhancements in PCoIP(R) Software Release 3.8

August 31st, 2011

Teradici, the developer of the PC-over-IP(R) (PCoIP(R)) protocol which enables a true PC experience for desktop virtualization, announced today enhanced capabilities in PCoIP Software Release 3.8. The new release offers bandwidth improvement by up to 75 percent, enhanced session resilience for mobile users and software session statistics to improve end user session management and performance monitoring.

The PCoIP Software Release 3.8 enhancements include:

– Client side caching – caches images and portions of the desktop composition to minimize retransmission of pixels across the network resulting in a significant reduction in the bandwidth of individual sessions.

– Enhanced text CODEC – An update to the PCoIP lossless CODEC used for text will improve compression resulting in lower bandwidth requirements.

– GPO control of build to lossless — enables users to choose the right solution for their individual deployments by providing an option for disabling PCoIP build to lossless to maximize bandwidth savings.

– Session resilience — improves the ability to recover from sessions with high packet loss or network interrupts.

– Software session statistics — over 30 per session statistics for monitoring performance and user experience using perfmon or any WMI 3rd party tool.

“Our new release delivers a significant reduction in bandwidth consumption, improved session resilience for mobile users and comprehensive performance monitoring and diagnosis capabilities – addressing important issues for our customers and IT professionals,” said Trent Punnet, vice president of marketing, product management and systems engineering at Teradici. “Teradici is excited to introduce these PCoIP protocol enhancements to address the needs of users on LAN, WAN and mobile networks, and enable our customers to better manage their virtual desktop infrastructure.”

Pakistan to ban encryption software

August 31st, 2011

Millions of internet users in Pakistan will be unable to send emails and messages without fear of government snooping after authorities banned the use of encryption software.

A legal notice sent to all internet providers (ISPs) by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, seen by the Guardian, orders the ISPs to inform authorities if any of their customers are using virtual private networks (VPNs) to browse the web.

Virtual private networks allow internet users to connect to the web undetected, meaning that they can access banned websites and send emails without fear of government interception.

Pakistan’s 20 million internet users have previously been banned from popular social networks, such as Facebook, because of blasphemous material about the prophet Muhammad. All internet traffic in the country travels through the Pakistan Internet Exchange, which can be intercepted by the military and civil intelligence agencies. The move echoes a crackdown against encrypted communications across the border in India and in China.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority legal notice urged ISPs to report customers using “all such mechanisms including EVPNs [encrypted virtual private networks] which conceal communication to the extent that prohibits monitoring”. Anyone needing to use this technology needs to apply for special permission, the notice said.

Authorities in Islamabad insisted that the ban on VPN access was intended to stem communications by terrorists.

However, banks, call centres and many other businesses use encrypted connections to communicate with their branches and customers, to protect sensitive data such as account numbers and passwords.

“This is like banning cars because suicide bombers use them,” said Shakir Husain, chief executive of Creative Chaos, a Karachi-based software company. “You have to find out who these guys [extremists] are. This is a blanket, knee-jerk, response.”

There is strict regulation of internet traffic in Pakistan. Last year, the authorities banned the entire Facebook website for months after a user launched a contest to draw a cartoon of the prophet Muhammad. Accessing the internet on BlackBerry smartphones is problematic, because of the device’s high-security encryption software.

Recently the regulator made it impossible for Pakistanis to access the website of Rolling Stone magazine, after it published an article on the high proportion of the national budget in Pakistan that goes on its military.

Lunchtime Deal: Ashampoo Software For $10 Or Less

August 31st, 2011

Ashampoo sells a variety of Windows applications, but is probably best known for its multimedia products.

To celebrate the CEO’s 49th birthday (is that a particular milestone? Nobody told me), they’re flogging off nearly all their applications for $US10 each. Or cheaper, if you don’t want a physical disc for Movie Shrink & Burn 3.

The basic deal is $US10 for any of Ashampoo’s offerings for the next couple of days (excluding CAD Software and Core Tuner 2), but at OzBargain they’ve noted that if you opt to buy Movie Shrink & Burn 2, it’ll offer you a free upgrade to version 3. If you can live without premium support and a physical disc, this drops to a very tasty $3.

Cloud software brings pay-per-audit revolution

August 31st, 2011

New auditing software for self-managed super funds enables practices to avoid license fees by paying per audit.

Financial services software provider Sage HandiSoft has created an audit application for SMSFs that is accessed online and stored in the cloud.

Auditflow SMSF enables auditors to pay per audit rather than for a license.

Richard Neal, chief executive and founder of Auditflow said this meant that small firms who had only a few SMSF audits to do would save money by only paying for what they use at a rate of $30 per audit.

The firm provides volume discounts for bigger clients, he told Financial Standard.

“We have one client that has 2000 funds,” he said. “We negotiated a volume rate for them.”

The online system allows SMSF auditors to communicate with fund administrators and accountants, Auditflow said in a release.

The firm released similar software in March for small and medium enterprises but this is the first offering for SMSFs.

It’s the second product in a suite of nine slated for release and the new software will help auditors comply with mandatory auditing standards, Neal said.

Sage HandiSoft provides taxation and accounting practice management software and says it has more than 6700 practice clients.

Sage is part of a multinational group operates in more than 26 countries covering the UK, Europe, North America, South Africa, Australia, India and China, it says on its website.
