Lakeside Software and Atlantis Computing Introduce Integrated Data Reporting & Optimization of VDI Storage

August 31st, 2011

Lakeside Software®, a leader in business intelligence solutions for IT professionals, and Atlantis Computing(TM), a leader in VDI storage and performance optimization solutions, today announced the integration of Lakeside SysTrack® and Atlantis ILIO(TM) solutions, giving IT professionals deeper insight into VDI storage utilization and the means to more efficiently reduce storage cost per desktop while delivering faster desktop performance.

Atlantis ILIO enables customers to dramatically cut the amount of storage required for VDI by up to 90% and deliver a “Better than PC” experience. During the pilot phase of a VDI deployment, joint customers use Lakeside’s SysTrack Virtual Machine Planner (VMP) to quantify the storage reduction and performance improvements realized by deploying Atlantis ILIO.

Through this integration, SysTrack VMP tracks, aggregates and reports comprehensive statistics projecting VDI storage utilization and disk access performance before and after a VDI deployment with Atlantis ILIO optimization, and provides projected savings realized through this implementation. Data is provided in both tabular and graphical formats to facilitate actionable interpretation of VDI storage statistics. SysTrack also monitors and manages the post-VDI deployment environment to assure continued storage optimization.

“To justify implementation, VDI must deliver cost, performance and scalability improvements over the existing physical PC-based computing infrastructure,” said Dan Salinas, Vice President of Business Development for Lakeside Software. “Atlantis ILIO provides measurable benefits in all three.”

“There is a pervasive problem with VDI projects under sizing the amount of storage and IOPS needed per desktop to deliver acceptable desktop performance. Ultimately, this results in users rejecting virtual desktops,” said Rajiv Pimplaskar, VP of Corporate Development, Atlantis Computing. “Lakeside SysTrack VMP helps IT teams identify the optimal storage specifications required to deliver the desired virtual desktop user experience.”

Samsung Backs VMware Mobile Hypervisor

August 31st, 2011

Samsung plans to make phones running VMware’s mobile hypervisor technology and enterprises may be able to better manage those phones with new software from VMware, the virtualization company is announcing on Tuesday.

The companies did not offer specifics about which Samsung phones might get the technology. “It will be dependent on the carriers,” said Srinivas Krishnamurti, director of product management and market development for VMware. “We have carrier partners lined up who will take us to market.” VMware isn’t saying yet which carriers are interested in selling the phones but expects them to launch in the coming months.

VMware first started talking about its mobile virtualization product late last year and showed it off in February running on an LG phone. LG has also said it plans to make phones available with the technology, starting with phones that will be available from Verizon.

VMware’s hypervisor works on Android phones and would allow people to buy their own devices and run a separate version of the operating system dedicated to corporate applications. The idea is to isolate corporate applications like e-mail from applications that users might download for personal use that have the potential to corrupt corporate data.

Samsung and LG must load modules from the hypervisor onto the phones in order to make them capable of using the technology. Once users buy the phones, they can download the VMware application that allows them to have a personal and a corporate profile on the phone, Krishnamurti said.

The architecture has been criticized because it essentially runs two full versions of Android on a single phone, which has the potential to impact performance. But VMware has been working with about 100 end users at 10 different enterprises in a private beta and hasn’t heard complaints about the performance, he said.

VMware is also announcing this week that it has developed management software that will allow enterprises to manage just the corporate side of the phone. IT managers will be able to remotely wipe just the corporate applications and data if a user loses the phone or leaves the company. The software will also let managers push applications to and set policies for the corporate profile on the phone.

The software works in conjunction with the hypervisor running on the phone.

Because many enterprises may already have mobile device management tools, VMware plans to release an SDK (software development kit) that would allow other vendors to incorporate the VMware management software into their products. That would allow an enterprise to use the potentially more fully functional software from a traditional mobile device management product and manage the VMware phones from the same console.

VMware hopes to release the SDK shortly after it releases the device management product. The mobile device management software will become available once devices hit the market, which should happen in the “coming months,” VMware said.

LG, which will be talking about its interest in mobile virtualization at VMworld, also isn’t saying when its phones will launch. The phone maker plans to also consider additional virtualization technologies, but said companies will likely be comfortable working with technology developed by VMware. “It helps that VMware’s existing base is familiar with their technology and if you have a core data center on VMware you probably will be a lot more comfortable trying out mobile virtualization from the same company,” said Ki Kim, corporate vice president of LG Electronics and head of the company’s global enterprise mobility solutions business.

A VMware video demonstrates on an LG phone how end users will toggle between the corporate and personal profiles.

Mobile virtualization has been a hot topic over the past year as IT departments feel increasing pressure from employees who want to bring devices of their choice to the office. There are other approaches, in addition to VMware’s. Open Kernel Labs is offering tools to developers that would let individual applications run in virtual machines. Enterproid has also developed software that doesn’t use traditional virtualization technology, but separates corporate applications on Android phones.

Verizon Acquires CloudSwitch Cloud Software Start-Up

August 31st, 2011

Verizon is planning to concentrate on Cloud services and the procurement of CloudSwitch is going to boost its enterprises and IT services. The negotiations and acquisition details are not yet publicized, but Verizon is out to prove that it would be playing more roles in the Cloud area in the coming year.

Verizon had bought Terremark, a cloud service company, for $1.4 billion earlier this year. Now they have CloudSwitch, which in turn is a cloud software startup, providing security management to enterprise level applications that runs in cloud.

It’s expected that Verizon will merge CloudSwitch into Terremark data centre business unit. The Company has already agreed to keep 30 staff including the executive team to remain in CloudSwitch to be a part of the Terremark’s cloud services in Boston.

The move will practically create a setback to other big cloud providers like Amazon and Rackspace since the cloud services will be more secured with Verizon. CloudSwitch software enables enterprises easy moving of applications and work datas to the cloud.

This service could attract other companies move closer to Terremark’s services now. Hence better mobility and security is hoping to get Verizon a good deal of progress in the cloud services.

Verizon also hopes to provide not only commodity clouds but a lot of other services too like higher level of SLAs, enterprise procurement, professional services, security modals and dedicated systems. Verizon had also partnered with Cisco to provide a cloud based single communication services earlier this year.

All these moves on Verizon’s part shows that the company has sensed the potential of Cloud market in the future.

Fraudulent certificate triggers blocking from software companies

August 31st, 2011

A fraudulent SSL certificate for “*.google.com” issued by Dutch certificate authority (CA) DigiNotar, possibly to the Iranian government or its agents, has triggered a wave of updates from software makers to stop applications trusting the CA. The certificate was issued on 10 July to unknown persons in Iran.

Several security experts, such as Moxie Marlinspoke, confirmed that the SSL certificate came from DigiNotar; one pastebin entry detailed the contents of the suspicious certificate, while another called for the “internet death sentence” because the company’s “carelessness may have resulted in deaths in Iran”. The Electronic Frontier Foundation said in a blog posting that it believes the attacks have been used to intercept searches and private email. It is unknown who the certificate was actually issued to and whether or not any other bogus certificates were issued.

The attack was initially noticed by Google Chrome users because Chrome 13 and later implements certificate pinning which ensures that the browser will only accept certificates for Google from a whitelist of certificate authorities; DigiNotar was not a CA on the whitelist and users of Chrome were alerted that something was amiss with the certificate they were being presented. The certificate was revoked yesterday, 29 August, at 16:59 GMT, but because many browsers do not check for revoked certificates by default, software vendors have had to take action to prevent the continued exploitation of the bogus certificate. It is also currently unknown if any other bogus certificates were issued by DigiNotar, therefore the vendors are opting to block all certificates signed by the CA.

Microsoft has released a security advisory and updates for all supported Windows operating systems – including Vista SP3, Server 2008 SP2 and Windows 7 SP1 – which revoke trust in the CA’s root certificate. Windows XP SP3 and Server 2003 SP2 will receive separate updates as these systems do not use the centrally managed Microsoft Certificate Trust List.

Mozilla has announced that it is releasing updates for Firefox (3.6.21, 6.0.1, 7, 8 and 9) and Firefox Mobile (6.0.1, 7, 8 and 9), Thunderbird (3.1.13 and 6.0.1) and SeaMonkey (2.3.2), which will also revoke trust in DigiNotar’s root certificate. Mozilla has also released instructions on how to delete the DigiNotar Root CA certificate from Firefox manually.

Google is also disabling DigiNotar’s certificate in Chrome “while investigations continue” even though Chrome detected the fraudulent certificate. The Chrome browser was only able to do that for google.com subdomains and if there are other fraudulent certificates for other domains Chrome would be unable to detect the deceit.
This is the second fraudulent certificate incident this year: in March, SSL certificates for addons.mozilla.org, Yahoo, Skype, Microsoft Live and Google were created by an intruder into a Comodo reseller.
