Rennaisance Learning reports growth in educational software sales

July 22nd, 2011

Renaissance Learning’s earnings for the second quarter rose 23.4 percent from last year, the Wisconsin Rapids-based educational technology and software provider reported Thursday.

The increase came, in part, because of an increased number of school districts that renewed their subscriptions for company products, said Steve Schmidt, president and chief operating officer, during a Thursday conference call with investors.

“The subscription renewal orders are off to a good start,” Schmidt said. “Overall, we’re pleased with our renewal success to date.”

Net income for the second quarter was $5.3 million, or 18 cents a share, compared with $4.3 million, or about 15 cents a share, during the same period last year, according to the company’s quarterly financial report.

“We’re pleased to have achieved continued growth and solid financial results for the second quarter, especially considering the challenging funding environment,” said Glenn James, chief executive officer. “It’s affirmation that our strategies are working.”

He attributed the increase to what he called a strong launch of the company’s STAR Enterprise program — a series of computer-based educational assessment tools — a large order of NEO laptops, which help instructors teach writing and keyboarding skills, as well as other subjects, and an increase in the number of school districts that renewed their subscriptions early.

In addition, the Wisconsin Rapids company launched an application last month that allows students to take Accelerated Reader quizzes on iPads, iTouch devices and iPhones, James said.

Revenue for the second quarter of 2011 was $35.7 million, a 15 percent increase from $31 million during the same period last year, according to the report.

Despite the increases in revenue, company officials remain cautious, as states continue to cut funding for school districts, especially during the third quarter, when the company usually gets its largest number of orders, James said.

“However, in spite of the school budget challenges, we believe we are well positioned strategically and financially to achieve solid growth over the longer term,” he said.

Security experts knock Google on PC infection warnings

July 22nd, 2011

Google has taken the unprecedented step of warning millions of users whose PCs it believes are infected with fake security software and other malware, the company said yesterday. But some security experts are leery of Google’s move.

The warning appears as a bright yellow banner that reads “Your computer appears to be infected,” at the top of the page after users conduct a search with Google.

“It appears that your computer is infected with software that intercepts your connection to Google and other sites,” the alert continues. The alert also includes a link to a help page that provides more information on the alert and infection, as well as advice about how to remove the malware.

Google first posted the warning on Tuesday after it detected what it called “unusual search traffic” when doing maintenance at one of its data centers. Google decided that the abnormal traffic was a symptom of infected PCs.

“This particular malware causes infected computers to send traffic to Google through a small number of intermediary servers called ‘proxies,’” said Damian Menscher, a Google security engineer, in a blog post updated Wednesday.

Menscher added that the proxy traffic originated from fake antivirus (AV) programs, often called “scareware.” Millions of machines are infested with the malware, he said.

Scareware, also dubbed “rogueware,” is software that pretends to be a legitimate security program. But in reality it’s a scam that claims a computer is heavily infected with worms, viruses, Trojan horses and the like. Once installed, the worthless program spooks users with pervasive pop-ups and phony alerts until they fork over a fee, sometimes as high as $80, to “register” the software.

It’s not unusual for scareware to redirect traffic through proxies, said Vikram Thakur, principal security response manager with Symantec, in an interview today.

“The bad guys don’t want to be done after they have your $50 or $60,” Thakur said, referring to the money extorted from users. “They want to go beyond that, and make changes to your computer.”

By redirecting traffic from a compromised computer through a proxy, the criminals can control what victims see in their browsers, forcing them, for instance, to a fake banking site when the user tries to access the legitimate URL. The attackers can also modify search results, push malicious links or alter the advertisements displayed on a webpage — all possible money makers.

“They can move your traffic to anywhere they want,” said Thakur.

Only content providers — such as Google, a website hosting company or an ISP — can spot this kind of proxy scam, said Thakur. “It’s not something flaggable by an infected client,” he said. “The client got the results it asked for…. It doesn’t care whether they came from legitimate or malicious sources.”

Google does not eradicate the malware or scareware from compromised computers, but only warns users that their machine is infected. People must run a legitimate antivirus program to detect and delete the threats, a point that security vendors were quick to make.

“Users still need to have an antivirus tool to clean their box and/or prevent becoming infected in the first place,” said Adam Wosotowsky, a senior research analyst with McAfee Labs, in an email reply to questions today.

Menscher also responded to users’ concerns that Google’s warning was exactly the same ploy that malware makers count on to dupe people into downloading attack code or scareware.

“We thought about this, too, which is why the notice appears only at the top of our search results page,” said Menscher. “Falsifying the message on this page would require prior compromise of that computer, so the notice is not a risk to additional users.”

Ironically, Google also noted on its help page that searching for “antivirus” could produce links to scareware downloads. “If you prefer to find your own, be wary of fake antivirus software that may actually be malicious,” the company warned.

Google’s warning, and the way it alerted users, prompted some security experts to criticize the company.

“Google’s saying that a fake message could only appear on machines that were already infected,” said Thakur. “But [its own message] is for people who are infected. That seems to be negating their own message.”

John Pescatore, an analyst with Gartner who covers security, brought up another concern. “I’m a bit worried because of the ‘how to fix this’ link Google has put in there,” said Pescatore. “There are definitely scenarios [where] malware writers will take advantage of this.”

Thakur agreed. “[Hackers] could easily adopt that same tactic,” Thakur said.

He also expects criminals to quickly come up with a counter move.

“Smarter malware authors will be able to circumvent this very easily, so it’s not an absolute answer,” said Thakur. “For example, they could change the proxies to ones that Google doesn’t know about.”

Buy UTV Software, TTK Prestige and Hero Honda: Sudarshan Sukhani

July 22nd, 2011

I have 3 buys and 2 sells. UTV Software is clearly on a roll, again it made lifetime new highs yesterday. This is in my buy list. You want to buy this. You do not want to question. It has gone so high. How much higher it can go. We can all be surprised. We already know what TTK Prestige is doing. This looks like becoming another one of those.

Another buy is in Hero Honda. The correction in Hero Honda was complete yesterday. Hero Honda corrected a lot from 1900 to almost 1740. That is a decent correction for a blue chip stock which means this qualifies as a perfect buy on dips opportunity. Hero Honda is going to be an outperformer in spite of whatever the fundamental analysts say. The third buy call comes in a relatively slow stock, GAIL. Now GAIL has been in a trading range. Yesterday it was in a very narrow range. It is a stock that has been showing a slow and steady up move. We have seen how Petronet LNG and IGL have gone up. Now it is not the same class.

GAIL has significant upside from here. We have short calls. Again you do not have to go and short now but these are excellent shorting ideas. Whenever you start sensing that this market is not going up and if you have a lot of long positions. The first is SAIL. SAIL is on the verge of a breakdown. What is happening here. From 260 it has come to 130 and promising to go sub-100. SAIL is a short every time you want to sell something idea and the second is a similar PSU stock BEML. BEML was 1100-1200 and it was supposed to be a high flier and it is now just not being watched by anyone. BEML has more downside here. A small rally fizzled out.

Microgen First-Half Profit Gains 20% on Business Software

July 21st, 2011

Microgen Plc (MCGN), a U.K. supplier of business software, said first-half profit rose 20 percent as more banks used its products.

Adjusted operating profit rose to 4.6 million pounds ($7.4 million) from 3.8 million pounds a year earlier. Sales rose 18 percent to 19 million pounds, the Fleet, England-based company said in a Regulatory News Service statement today.

Growth was driven by a strong performance from Microgen’s Aptitude Solutions range of business software, the company said, which accounted for 57 percent of revenue. Sales of the product grew by 38 percent in the period to 10.8 million pounds as banks, insurers, and media organizations purchased software to process data sets too big for competitors to handle.

Earnings per share rose 33 percent to 4 pence, while the interim dividend increased 22 percent to 1.1 pence per share.

Tablets using Microsoft software top RIM’s touted Playbook

July 21st, 2011

Tablets using Microsoft Corp software saw stronger sales than the high-profile Playbook from BlackBerry maker Research In Motion in the second quarter, according to Strategy Analytics.

Even though Microsoft has yet to launch a version of its Windows software designed specifically for tablet computers it still picked up a 4.6 percent share of the market in the second quarter compared with a 3.3 percent share for Playbook, which is based on RIM’s QNX software.

RIM launched Playbook, its first tablet computer, in April to lackluster reviews. Microsoft, which provides the same software for tablets as it sells to desktop computer makers, is not expected to launch dedicated tablet software until the late next year.
Meanwhile market leader Apple Inc fought off an increasingly strong challenge from Google Inc , whose Android software is used in tablets from many hardware vendors including Samsung Electronics Co and Motorola Mobility.

Apple’s iPad tablet dominated the market with a 61.3 percent share. But Android increased its market share to 30 percent from 2.9 percent in the same quarter a year ago, when Apple had 94.3 percent of the market, the technology research firm, Strategy Analytics said.

Patents and lawsuits threatening the free world of software

July 21st, 2011

Could something as pesky and well, trivial, as a patent ruling topple the mighty Android from its perch as the mostused operating system for smartphones . Millions of people busy downloading Android apps all over the world will laugh at the idea, but according to SeekingAlpha, here’s what’s happening.

A body called the International Trade Commission (ITC), which investigates such things has come out with a ruling that says that Apple has valid patents on key applications for smartphones. Worse, many of these patents, says ITC, are so watertight that it’s virtually impossible to invent anything around them.

Apple has attacked handset maker HTC with this, and more than a dozen other patent suits, trying to cripple its abilities to make Android-enabled phones – or at least to stop these machines from being exported to the vast, lucrative US market. If it is successful, analysts fear that then Apple will be encouraged to attack other smartphone-makers like Samsung , LG , Motorola and so on and block them from the American market, creating a smartphone monopoly for its own, expensive devices.

This isn’t just anti-competitive, it could seriously cripple innovation and research. Worse, if app-makers feel constantly threatened by lawsuits, their innovation and creativity will get stifled. Handset-makers, harassed by patent suits could cut back on Android-enabled machines. Imagine a world where everybody is forced into using the same iPhone, with the same apps, paying the same design premium that Apple will continue to charge for the foreseeable future.

Winning these lawsuits might seem like a really smart idea for Apple, but for the hardware and software industries, a world bound by legalese and patent suits will become an unaffordable, if not dull, place indeed.
