IDC Invites Software Vendors to Participate in Its Annual “Innovative Companies to Watch” Survey

June 23rd, 2011

-International Data Corporation (IDC) is inviting independent software vendors to participate in its annual “Innovative Companies to Watch” survey for the applications and business analytics markets. This research highlights software vendors who exemplify innovative solutions around emerging software trends that in turn clearly demonstrate an improved return on investment (ROI) for their clients.

“Senior IDC software analysts have determined a set of key trends shaping the applications and business analytics markets and we are now asking vendors in those areas to share with us the ways in which they are capitalizing on these developments,” stated Henry Morris, senior vice president, Software and Services Research at IDC. “This is an opportunity for IDC to highlight companies that are finding new and inventive ways to adjust their business models based on economic challenges and shifts in buying patterns.”

Companies participating in the 2011 IDC Innovative Companies to Watch survey must have less than $100M in revenue for the trailing 12 month period and may not submit a product for consideration that has previously won an IDC Innovative Company to Watch award. Additionally, survey participants will also be asked to supply a customer case study from an implementation completed in 2010. Those selected as “Innovative Companies to Watch” will be highlighted in forthcoming IDC research documents.

The survey will be open from June 22 to July 30, 2011

Malicious Software Exploiting Windows Autorun, Drops

June 23rd, 2011

Microsoft saw that malware infections, which took advantage of Windows Autorun utility, dropped nearly instantly following the automatic deactivation of the feature within the previous editions of the Windows OS (operating system). The Register published this in news n June 14, 2011.

According to an evaluation by Microsoft, there was 1.3m fewer infections in Windows Vista and Windows XP during March-May 2011 after the deactivation in February 2011 in comparison with those during February-April 2011 when the change hadn’t yet been performed. By May 2011, assaults against Vista computers declined 74% while those against XP systems, 59%.

The contamination percentages for Windows Vista and Windows XP plummeted quite considerably, stated senior program manager Holly Stewart with MMPC (Microsoft Malware Protection Center). ComputerWorld published this in news on June 14, 2011.

The software giant eventually zeroed Autorun within Windows 7; however till now, those using previous editions were forced to manipulate inside Windows registry alternatively load certain update for disabling it. If the change is introduced in the authorized Windows Update system, it could result in innumerable users disabling Autorun automatically.

Stated group manager Jerry Bryant for Response Communications at Microsoft, it was about the right period currently when the change could be pushed industry wide as well as experience a considerable influence on the way malicious software disseminated. The development was sure to aid in increased safeguard of the ecosystem, Bryant said in addition. The Register published this.

MMPC compiled certain statistics, according to which, starting January 2011, the month preceding the shipment of the Autorun upgrade, there has been a 62% drop in contamination rates for XP Service Pack 3, the only edition that Microsoft still supports, while the rates dropped 68% for Vista Service Pack 1 and 82% for Vista Service Pack 2 during the same time.

Moreover, starting May 2011, Microsoft witnessed slightly over 400,000 contaminations due to malicious software, which exploited the Windows Autorun utility, plummeting from the highest count of approximately 1.8m during June 2010. Nearly instantly when Microsoft released the update, the company witnessed a likewise decline of contaminations, albeit it was not similarly steep.

Two Arrested in $74 Million Fraud for Fake Anti-Virus Software

June 23rd, 2011

Two Latvian citizens have been arrested overseas for their operation of malicious computer programs which cost computer users over $74 million in losses by selling fake anti-virus software for computers. An estimated 960,000 people were victims in the scam, which is known as “Scareware.”

Scareware is a fake security alert on a users computer which says, for example, “Warning! There is a virus on your computer…Remove now,” and asks to initiate a system scan and clean-up to counter the potential virus or malware.

In reality, once users click “Remove now” they unknowingly have exposed themselves to malware and keylogger programs which are then used to harvest private and financial data from computer users.

Some of these programs ask computer users to purchase the software for clean-up or anti-virus software which further exposes their credit card data when they believe they are buying the bogus software.

The two operators of this scareware scheme have been charged with two counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of computer fraud.

The defendants, Peteris Sahurovs, 22, and Marina Maslobojeva, 23, were arrested Tuesday in Rezekne, Latvia. It is unclear how long the extradition process may take.

EdgeCase Uses Ruby to Create New, Award-Winning Software Product in Seven Months

June 22nd, 2011

Joe O’Brien, co-founder of EdgeCase and his development team took a big idea and turned it into reality in seven months. What was the big idea? Build a software testing product that allows testers to create scripts using plain English, and then execute those scripts in the cloud. The result was Janova.

How did the Edgecase development team build a product that was both new and complex in such a short time? Using the combination of Ruby programming language and an agile software development process.

“When we came up with the idea for Janova we saw a need for a simple and inexpensive way to test software,” said Brian Lusenhop, Director of Product Management at Janova. “We wanted to use open source software and design it so testing could be done in plain English which eliminates the need for business analysts to understand code.”

The goal was to reduce the cost of testing. The Janova team had seen how standard software testing techniques drove up infrastructure costs and created bottlenecks by tying up machines while testers ran long scripts. And they’d seen the struggle of business analysts who didn’t know “code-speak” and were struggling to work well with the IT development teams.

Using open source technology and an agile process reduced the cost of product development. “Aside from the flexibility you get with agile software development, it minimizes the cost of change,” said O’Brien. “And not just during the development process which is when most people worry about those kinds of costs. It saves over the entire life of the product, which is when maintenance costs can become burdensome.”

But creating a software testing product that could execute plain English testing scripts using open source software, whether it was the Ruby programming language or some other open source technology wasn’t going to be enough. Lusenhop wanted his tool to run in the cloud. “The idea of running it as software as a service (SaaS) was new. No one else was doing that, and we didn’t even know if it could be done.”

O’Brien told them it was possible in a meeting that took place in February 2010. Within two weeks of that meeting, Lusenhop and his team were running a simplified version of Janova as it exists today. On September 18, 2010 Janova was released.

“It was exciting,” said Lusenhop. “We found out the big idea was possible, and we shaved a year off our product plan. Within three to four months of release we had 6,000 free registered trial users.”

Lusenhop and the EdgeCase development team aren’t the only ones who are excited. Janova has been awarded the IT Martini Community Award for 2010, was a Semi-Finalist for the 2010 Tech Columbus Innovation Award for Outstanding Startup Business, and won a 2011 Red Herring Top 100 North America Award.

With so much achieved in such a short time, it would be easy to think the EdgeCase development team is still fully supporting the product. But that’s a poor assumption. “As of February 2011, with the help of EdgeCase, all development and support of Janova was fully transitioned back in-house,” said Lusenhop. “It was always the vision they’d do the initial development and help us build a self-sufficient team. And that’s exactly what they did.”

O’Brien agrees. “My dream for EdgeCase has always been to take an out-of-the-box idea, prove it can be done, implement it, and build a team that can stand on its own. And with Janova that’s exactly what we did.”
