CNC Software, Inc. Showcases Mastercam Router X5 at AWFS 2011

April 27th, 2011

AWFS 2011 will feature the latest in the line of powerful Mastercam machining software. Stop by booth # 2211 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV, July 20-23, for a look at Mastercam Router X5. Mastercam Router X5 continues the trend of faster and more efficient programming with new enhancements that will keep your shop ahead of the competition. Automatic Toolpathing improvements and solids support in nesting combine with new enhancements in a comprehensive router package intended to improve shop floor productivity.

In Mastercam Router X5, both Rectangular and TrueShape Nesting support solid operations, including operations created by Feature Based Machining toolpaths.

Automatic Toolpathing (ATP)

Mastercam includes an Automatic Toolpathing option which can read in entire projects and have them automatically programmed using presets that you choose. Mastercam Router X5 includes several improvements to ATP, including the ability to:

· Easily update strategies by updating existing level scans

· Quickly add new operations from within the Strategy Manager

· Add multiple materials on-the-fly in standard ATP mode

Feature Based Machining Block Drill Support

Mastercam X5 Feature Based Machining (FBM) Drill now recognizes block drill units that are configured in the active Router machine definition. FBM Drill can automatically assign block drill operations to the job when the tools that are in the block drill definition are appropriate for the hole features on your part. If there are hole sizes that cannot be drilled with the active block drill configuration, they can be automatically processed using a standard tool in the main spindle.

Tasmanian Polytechnic rolls out iPad, iPhone device management software

April 27th, 2011

The Tasmanian Polytechnic has rolled out mobile device management across its fleet of iPhones and iPads in a bid to provide increased security and a centralised approach to apps.

Tasmanian Polytechnic’s senior computer systems officer, Daniel Le Lant, said the rollout of AirWatch has saved the IT team time and increased the level of control it has over internal devices.

“With AirWatch, we now have centralised control over the devices and how they are used, while also eliminating all manual aspects of device management,” he said in a statement.

“AirWatch provides us with the control to push internal apps out to the devices without the requirement of Apple’s app store.”

The organisation, which expects to witness an increase in iPhone users in the next few years, currently supports some 500 iPhones used by staff members and plans to continue its use of Apple OS devices in the classroom.

SuccessFactors Buys Enterprise Learning Management Software Plateau For $290M

April 27th, 2011

On the heels of buying enterprise learning startup Jambok, the company has acquired another learning management software developer-Plateau Systems. SuccessFactors will pay $145 million in cash plus $145 million in stock for Plateau, for a total of $290 million.

Plateau Systems’ Learning Management Systems is generally usually used by Human Resources departments for the management and delivery of learning and training across organizations. Plateau Systems’s Talent Management Suite includes applications for learning management, performance management, career and succession planning and compensation management.

Plateau currently brings more than 350 customers to SuccessFactors, including General Electric, the U.S. Air Force and Capital One. Based on initial estimates, the combined companies will have more than 15 million users. After the deal closes, Plateau’s SaaS based LMS will be integrated directly into SuccessFactors’ BizX suite.

The acquisition price is fairly high for SuccessFactors, whose largest acquisition to date has been social enterprise software company CubeTree for $50 million. But clearly, SuccessFactors sees tremendous potential in aligning its business with human capital management.

Delcam CRISPIN releases 2011 software for footwear design and manufacture

April 27th, 2011

Delcam CRISPIN has released the 2011 versions of its range of design and manufacturing software for the footwear industry. The new versions include significant enhancements to the LastMaker program for last design and the Engineer Pro system for the production of 2D sample and graded footwear patterns, plus general speed and ease-of-use improvements across the full range. Full details can be found on www.footwearcadcam.com.

Delcam CRISPIN is the world’s largest supplier of CADCAM software to the footwear industry and is the only supplier able to provide a complete solution for the design and manufacture of lasts, uppers and soles.

The main addition to the 2011 version of the LastMaker program is a brand new Graphical User Interface that provides a familiar look and feel with the other core products in the footwear solutions product range. The functions for last editing, measurements, control planes and sections are accessed through icons rather than a mixture of icons and menus, providing a much simpler-to-use and more intuitive working process.

Improvements have also been made to the last import functionality, which makes data import much quicker and easier to achieve. The last can be edited and modified in the solid display, with the option to view it as the mesh. There is also a new last view-and-rotate mechanism using the middle mouse button, eliminating the need for the view and rotate dialogue boxes.

Product integration is part of the main focus for 2011 and LastMaker now includes the .SHOE file format. This stores the data from all the Delcam CRISPIN products, including the 3D last, the 3D design and sole, and the 2D patterns, plus costing and cutting. It ensures that only the one single file format is required across the complete product range.

For the 2011 release, Engineer Pro includes a new snapping function that allows single or multiple data points to snap to another data point when drawing or editing base lines. A “Parts & Shapes” library has been implemented to allow parts and shapes to be saved in an external library. An Interactive Margin function to quickly and easily adjust the position of a created margin line has been added, plus the Match Margin function, which uses a target base line to define a new margin line.

Edge Templates, the functionality to add dependent feature lines to a net part shape, have been further improved and access made easier by adding the functionality into the parts manager dialogue. This has significantly speeded up the pattern-engineering process. Initial feedback from customers states an increase in productivity by up to 50%.

The TechPac module within Engineer Pro provides a 2D solution for producing technical packages, including technical information, images and operation sequences for manufacturing. Reports can be generated in PDF and HTML formats for factory operatives to follow, which give them all the technical information required for the upper assembly processes like clicking, skiving, folding and closing. New for TechPac 2011 are User Defined Reports, which create automatic reports using information and data received from Engineer Pro. This reduces the time taken to produce a technical package and improves the integration between products. TechPac also includes new functionality to calculate the visible net material areas of shoes.

UK’s Eee Pad Transformer Said to Be Getting Software Update

April 27th, 2011

The folks at ASUS UK have tweeted that their newly-launched (in the US, anyway) Eee Pad Transformer will be getting an update across the pond from us. They left no hints as to what it’d bring or provide, though, so I guess a surprise is in order for those of you who have one. As for you folks over here in the States? It’s possible these versions of the Transformer already have the latest and greatest software available, but we’ll be on the lookout for a similar upgrade regardless.

SAP wins $24m budget software contract

April 27th, 2011

The department had gone to tender last year for off-the-shelf software for a central budget management system, which is expected to collect and maintain up-to-date budget estimates from across departments, and to provide reports.

The government has now purchased a suite of SAP solutions including Enterprise Resource Planning, Enterprise Performance Management, Business Intelligence and public sector industry solutions, according to SAP. The contract, published this month on AusTender and first spotted by Intermedium, started on 24 March this year and finishes on 18 March 2016.

The government decided to redevelop its current budget management system because it was nearing the end of its useful life, according to the department’s site. A newer system would also provide better and more timely access to information for fiscal management, and allow better monitoring of fiscal performance. All data published in the Australian Government Budget Papers will be sourced from the system.

The department is still in the midst of a search for a system implementation partner, which it expects, according to its site, to appoint by mid-year.
