Polaris Software acquires US-based IdenTrust Inc for $20 mn

April 28th, 2011

City-based banking, financial services and insurance software developer Polaris Software Lab Ltd. Wednesday announced the acquisition of an 85.3 percent stake in the US-based IdenTrust Inc for $20 million to enter the cloud computing space in a major way.

“With increasing dependency on the internet, security solutions that incorporate identity management are a key element in any cloud (computing) offering. We believe that IdenTrust, being a proven provider of bank-grade identity authentication in 175 countries, will bring in the required expertise in this area allowing us to create more value for our clients by providing the most secure Financial Infrastructure solutions,” Arun Jain, founder, chairman & CEO, Polaris Software said.

The $9-million revenue IdenTrust was founded in 1999 by a group of financial institutions that included Citigroup, Bank of America, Chase, Barclays, HSBC and Deutsche.

“The balance 14.7 percent stake is being held by the existing shareholders. The company has less than 100 employees,” Jain told IANS.

As the only bank-developed identity authentication system, IdenTrust provides applications that use electronic identities that establish contracts, grant authority, support secure encrypted data and information storage and secure online transactions.

According to Jain, the shareholders of IdenTrust include 20 banks, and the company brings with it an existing customer base of 10 of the world’s largest banks; a portfolio of patents, and the associated intellectual property and expertise around identity, authentication, encryption, and electronic signatures on a global basis; and strong operational and hosting capabilities, led by a solid management team.

When cited the investments made by Polaris Software in redesigning the Orbitech suite of banking software products which were acquired from Orbitech Solutions in early 2002, Jain said: “Intellectual property rights (IPR) have two parts – product and the technology. What we did with Orbitech products was upgrading the products to offer them on service oriented architecture (SOA).”

Jain said IdenTrust will close this year with a revenue of $11 million and make profit.

“The potential is large in the cloud computing space,” Jain added. IdenTrust is the fourth acquisition for Polaris Software in three years.

In 2008, it had acquired US-based insurance product and component services player SEEC Inc for Rs.37 crore and in 2010 Laser Soft for Rs.52 crore.

Jain said the integration of the acquired companies have been completed.

Kodak Expands Capture Software Suite with Two New Microsoft SharePoint Offerings

April 28th, 2011

Kodak introduces two new software products that will help office workers using Microsoft SharePoint environments gain efficiencies in sharing, viewing, editing and searching documents, as well as extending the benefits of SharePoint to include paper documents.

“KODAK Document Viewer Software and KODAK Scan and View Software enable enterprise organizations to use paper documents to trigger specific workflows, speed up existing processes and add more value to business operations. Web-based software programs make it easy to find, review, compare, annotate and scan documents from within SharePoint environments. Now, companies can better manage document-driven workflows such as invoice processing, contract management or new hire on-boarding,” the company informed.

“SharePoint adoption is clearly on the rise, with an estimated 100,000 server installations and 200 million client authorized licenses to-date, yet many businesses still search for organizational structure and management tools needed to take full advantage of this powerful system,” said Tim Mortenson, Worldwide Business Director, Software, Document Imaging, KODAK ’s Business Solutions and Services Group. “Kodak’s new software offerings enable users to more easily find, view and work with documents and metadata uploaded to SharePoint from any source, including paper documents, files and records.”

KODAK Document Viewer Software embeds an inline document preview function directly within SharePoint. A visual search function provides full document previews within search results on SharePoint. Document Viewer Software can display document previews in either thumbnail or full page format and users may zoom in and out or fit the document to the width of screen. Document previews are especially fast because KODAK ’s viewing software doesn’t need to wait for the entire document to be transmitted and has compatibility with more than 300 file types, allowing users to review virtually any file stored in SharePoint, even if the application associated with the file is not installed on the user’s computer or workstation.

KODAK Scan and View Software supports document scanning and image enhancement directly within SharePoint. The integrated document capture functionality makes it an ideal solution for ad-hoc document scanning to SharePoint and works well with KODAK ’s market-leading lineup of document scanners such as the KODAK SCANMATE i1120 Scanner or the KODAK i2400 Scanner. The software also provides support for TWAIN compliant capture devices.

Equally important, Scan and View Software extends the preview and search capabilities of the Document Viewer Software through several additional capabilities that operate seamlessly in SharePoint. An enhanced search function provides users with the ability to search for specific document metadata, yielding pinpointed search results. The software also works to improve collaboration and business workflow process with tools that enable users to annotate, stamp and highlight specific documents. Scan and View Software simplifies the time consuming task of reformatting files, with single-click tools that rearrange and remove pages, and split and merge documents. Users can edit and enhance documents in SharePoint environments with tools such as border removal, page de-skewing, and image cleanup.

KODAK Document Viewer and Scan and View Software support strategic business and IT priorities. Documents used with Document Viewer and Scan and View Software remain in SharePoint environments, creating a consistent and constant audit trail for paper-based documents. To minimize impact on network bandwidth, the document preview function runs completely in a web browser, eliminating the need for large file downloads and system memory for programs and applications. The software programs’ server-based installation also simplifies IT workload and maintenance.

Finally, the new KODAK Document Viewer and Scan and View Software are fully complementary to KODAK Capture Pro Software, which offers functionality that easily goes beyond ad hoc scanning and can automate metadata capture. Capture Pro Software is designed to work seamlessly with both SharePoint 2007 and 2010.

“The new software programs are an important development for KODAK ’s Document Imaging business, our partners and our customers,” said Tony Barbeau, General Manager, Document Imaging, KODAK ’s Business Solutions and Services Group. “They demonstrate our intent and ability to deliver specific improvements for IT- and services-led systems, such as SharePoint, enabling organizations to do more with images and information to improve processes, foster business growth, and increase profits.”

Arris Deploys CMTS Software To Double Density

April 28th, 2011

Arris is in early deployments of a software upgrade for its flagship DOCSIS 3.0 C4 cable modem termination system, which the vendor claims effectively doubles the CMTS’s downstream capacity — to deliver up to 343 Megabits per second — without the need for any wiring or hardware changes.

The eXtended Downstream Cable Access Module (XD CAM) release 7.4 field upgrade is available for purchase to the entire installed base of C4 DOCSIS 3.0 CMTSs.

Initially the C4 was available with a 16-channel downstream cable access module; the XD CAM upgrade provides 32 6-MHz downstream channels (or 24 8-MHz channels). According to Arris, the increased downstream density simplifies the transition to eight-channel bonding and gives cable operators the ability to deliver more bandwidth per subscriber at a lower cost than previously possible.

Arris announced the XD cable access module last fall.

Also available in release 7.4 is support for IPv6 as well as DOCSIS 3.0 multicast traffic. Comcast recently completed successful testing of a live application of native dual stack (IPv4 and IPv6) for its customers in the Denver area using Arris’s C4 CMTS.

“Each time we upgrade a C4’s capacity and density, we lower its total cost of ownership,” Bruce McClelland, president of Arris’s Broadband Communications Systems unit, said in a statement. “The XD CAM is a highly cost effective way to double downstream capacity by simply loading new software, without significant service disruption or configuration changes, and noticeably improves the customer’s broadband user experience.”

Arris’s two biggest customers are Comcast and Time Warner Cable.

UPS unit provides platform for Pitney Bowes shipping software

April 28th, 2011

The companies have put pen to paper on an agreement for ConnectShip to provide a compliance engine that will help Pitney Bowes customers in managing their logistics process.

Pitney Bowes said the move would “broaden the options” for its customers and allow further growth in the shipping software arena.

Mark A. Williams, director of distribution solutions for Connecticut-based Pitney Bowes, said the deal with ConnectShip would mean increased functionality and carrier compliance for software users.

“This agreement is a key component in our global strategy to deliver a more complete enterprise solution and a defining step toward securing our position as the preferred provider in this market,” he said.

Oklahoma-based ConnectShip has been part of UPS since 2001, when the company acquired parts of TanData Corporation. It produces a Toolkit including a software developer’s kit that allows users to integrate transportation and logistics software into existing business processes.

The company’s technology is already used in a range of services and products for parent company UPS, but the ConnectShip system can compare shipping rates across various major parcel shippers including FedEx, DHL, Purolator, TNT, UPS, and the US Postal Service, as well as less-than truckload carriers in 49 countries.

Pitney Bowes said ConnectShip’s scalable multi-carrier technology would support shipping logistics directly through its shipping solutions.

“As Pitney Bowes continues to look for ways to provide its customers with streamlined and efficient shipping services, ConnectShip will allow Pitney Bowes to do so with a standardized global platform for rating and shipment processing,” the company explained.

“This can help Pitney Bowes customers have critical shipping documents that are fully carrier compliant, reducing risk and expense to the shipper.”
