From Financial Software to Education: How one company is using its core business to leave a social footprint

March 17th, 2011

As the ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ (CSR) movement gains momentum worldwide, there is also a pragmatic realization among companies that it is important to align such initiatives with the core business and invest substantially in such projects. A good example of how CSR may be made complementary and synergistic to your business came from MetaQuotes Software Corp. recently.

Known as the global leader among providers of online trading platforms that facilitate foreign exchange brokerage (given its popular products MetaTrader 4 and 5), MetaQuotes launched the TeamWox Groupware as a tool for companies to automate the business process, optimizing both production and management.

Using TeamWox, a company can organize its entire operations, make them more transparent and hasten decision making based on full and authentic information. The system comprises popular business components such as a Docflow, Customer and Vendors Relationship Management (CRM), Personnel Management, Collaboration and Accounting modules and is a very effective management tool in the hands of small and medium businesses (SMB).

Now, based on an analysis of why educational companies were lukewarm in their response to the product, which has been so enthusiastically embraced by the management in other diverse sectors, MetaQuotes has launched a worldwide social initiative under which it has pledged to provide TeamWox to any educational institution, absolutely free of cost.

“Educational institutions are almost the same as commercial companies in organizational terms. They have big staff strength, a lot of “paper work”, periodic group events to be organized – all of which could be managed effectively with TeamWox, leading to reductions in both cost and time,” says Renat Fatkhullin, CEO of MetaQuotes Software Corp., “but we found that many of these enterprises could not afford a product such as this as they mostly do not operate as strictly commercial organizations. That is when we decided to give them the product free.”

Thus, the free version of this commercially successful and very functional software was made available to any organization that has a valid license for educational activity, issued by the relevant governmental regulatory body. The offer is open for an unlimited number of users and has no time restrictions.

This, however, is not MetaQuotes’ first brush with education per se. The company maintains and develops several websites aimed to provide free education in the field of automated trading on the financial markets. They even pay for the user-generated content in these sites so that any community member with strong knowledge in the field may write for these sites and get paid for that. This model has helped MetaQuotes build a substantial library of unique information that the public can access for free.

The company has also sponsored some online books in this field. Once again, it publishes these books on the Internet for free and anybody can download them for use. Given its clearly rooted philosophy of furthering the cause of education, it is perhaps not surprising that the offer of TeamWox was extended to the sector in particular.

The current initiative was launched first towards the end of February in Russia, the homeland of the TeamWox developers, where it received a warm response. Fifty educational institutions in the country had already applied for this version, provided copies of their educational licenses, and received the free software before the company announced the offer globally.

Users have been benefited by many of its features, which they feel have systematized their operations to a large extent, making many internal processes, tasks and projects faster and more controllable.

Nickolay Nickolaevich Bakushin, deputy director of facilities management at the experimental Moscow-based high sports school “Khlebnikovo”, cites the example of the email management system which has helped them so much. “We can now immediately assign a received email to an executor – instead of waiting for a director’s endorsement, making several copies and bringing them to relevant responsible specialists. I love this one-click solution. The director receives all emails and appoints the responsible employees, which is then clearly traced in the history,” explains Bakushin. He also finds himself more in control of execution by people to whom he would have delegated certain tasks; the mobility that the system offers to a manager who may be physically present elsewhere is a huge plus as well.

For the school of management thought which believes that business-aligned social initiatives are more effective in creating true impact and less likely to be ephemeral, MetaQuotes clearly sets a sound example.

‘Blue’ financial software now on Digicel BlackBerry app centre

March 17th, 2011

The application, trademarked Blue, is a mobile software with a highly intuitive interface that provides users with free streaming, real-time data from global financial markets, including stocks, mutual funds, currencies, commodities, financial futures, oil and precious metals, together with extensive coverage of breaking business news.

Major milestone

A joint release from both companies quoted Niloo Kassam, senior vice-president for global marketing at JSM as saying that Blue was the only financial application to be selected for Digicel’s BlackBerry application centre.

“This represents a major milestone in our strategy to expand into emerging markets, which we feel present huge potential for our app(lication). Working with Digicel’s ever-increasing subscriber base, we aim to make Blue available to BlackBerry users in Digicel’s 26 markets in the Caribbean and Central America,” said Kassam.

Brian Finn, Digicel Group commercial director, said that making Blue available for free on the BlackBerry represented the company’s commitment to providing customers with best value mobile services.

“By providing access to applications that enable and empower people to manage their financial, business and personal lives more effectively, Digicel is helping to unleash the real power of the BlackBerry to our ever-growing BlackBerry customer base,” he added.

The release said the application offers timely access to those who need to track their investments in realtime. It enables bankers, brokers, dealers, fund managers, financial advisors, accountants, lawyers, retail investors and anyone exposed to financial markets to view high-quality streaming market data over mobile devices.

Gaming software jobs just the start of galway’s new hub

March 17th, 2011

Galway is positioning itself to become a major Irish hub for multi-national gaming software giants, following the announcement this week that at least 200 new jobs – and potentially hundreds more in the sector – will be created here.

The IDA has confirmed to the Connacht Tribune that Galway is well-placed to attract further investment, after American online gaming giant ZeniMax Online Studios will create a new customer support centre.

It’s understood that at least 200 jobs will be created by the company, with the potential for hundreds more by the time ZeniMax begins recruitment – expected in the last quarter of this year.
The announcement was made by Richard Bruton, the new Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation on Tuesday afternoon.

ZeniMax offers online support for online videogame players – the head of the new Galway facility was responsible for providing support for ‘World of Warcraft’, the world’s most successful role-playing game.

The announcement comes as Electronic Arts’ (EA) Bioware subsidiary finalises plans to create 200 jobs at a new facility in Galway.

IDA Regional Manager Jim Murren told the Connacht Tribune: “There is huge potential there for Galway. It is now well-placed to attract even more jobs, multinationals and investment. It’s almost like a ‘herd instinct’, that’s why we have so many more software companies in Ireland. They’re not competitors here.”

Financial markets software developer MetaQuotes offers free enterprise management system for educational institutions

March 11th, 2011

Acknowledged global leader in software development for financial markets, MetaQuotes Software Corp., has launched a worldwide social initiative under which it has pledged to provide any educational institution its groupware for managing enterprises, known by the brand name TeamWox, absolutely free of cost.
MetaQuotes, known globally for its online trading platforms that facilitate foreign exchange brokerage activity – such as Metatrader 4 and 5 – evolved TeamWox as an enterprise management system for expanding companies that require modern functional tools to organize and optimize their operations.
Initially developed to meet the internal needs of the fast growing company itself, TeamWox was gradually expanded and polished to yield a tool that could help all successful small and medium businesses to coordinate their staff, improve productivity, reduce costs and foster greater transparency and control. Naturally, it aroused a high level of interest among management representatives of various companies.

Now, in realization of the fact that educational institutions too would find a package such as TeamWox extremely helpful but would probably find it unaffordable, the software developer has announced that it will give the product free to any educational institution.
Announcing the offer, Renat Fatkhullin, CEO of MetaQuotes Software Corp said, “The only condition for use of the free version is the ownership of a valid license for educational activity, issued by the relevant governmental regulatory body. The system offered to educational institutions is designed for an unlimited number of users and has no time restrictions. Thus we now offer a commercially successful, fully functional product to schools absolutely free of charge”
The program was initiated in Russia, the birthplace of the groupware, towards the end of February and has seen a warm response in the two weeks since its launch. Fifty educational institutions in the country had already applied for this version, provided copies of their educational licenses, and received the free software before the company announced its decision to extend the scheme globally. Interested institutions have been encouraged to apply online on the TeamWox website and submit electronic copies of their education licenses.

Overcharge software glitch fixed: parking authority

March 11th, 2011

If mysterious charges from the Calgary Parking Authority have been appearing on your credit card account recently, you were not alone.

Officials with the city agency said Thursday that a software problem responsible for the errors has been identified and fixed, and that refunds are now being processed.

Starting on March 1, the computer program that transfers credit card information to the authority was disrupted, resulting in multiple duplicate charges to as many as 23,000 customers, officials said.

More than a thousand people called and emailed to complain.

“We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and the stress it has caused our customers,” said Dale Fraser, the authority’s general manager.

All of the duplicate transactions have been identified and refunds will be sent directly to customer accounts next week, officials said.

Firm lands lucrative software deal

March 11th, 2011

A Belfast company has secured a multi-million dollar contract with a US corporation to provide mobile computing via the internet.
The three-year deal between Aepona and Virginia-based Neustar Inc aims to develop new mobile and web-based applications to change how smartphone users work, shop and socialise. It will create at least ten jobs in Northern Ireland.

A spokesman for Aepona said: “That represents a significant opportunity for Aepona. Its software is currently used by 25 major telecoms companies.”

Aepona’s chief financial officer, Michael Black, said while mobile operators will continue to be major customers, the emergence of mobile cloud (internet-based information storage) providers such as Neustar means the company is now gearing up for rapidly increasing demand for its software products.

“We anticipate that the new markets opening up will drive further significant growth for Aepona over the next few years. To support this, we are planning to increase our workforce by around 15% in the near term,” Mr Black said.

“The expansion will involve a number of new highly specialised leading edge technical positions in Belfast. Further recruitment is likely in the medium term, both in Belfast and at our other overseas locations.”

Microsoft drops Windows desktop virtualization pair

March 11th, 2011

Microsoft is prolonging the life of Windows XP apps with the latest release of its MED-V desktop virtualization software.

MED-V is pitched by Microsoft as something to help customers migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7, letting Windows XP apps run in the new operating system environment.

Version 2.0 – released Thursday for customers on Microsoft volume licensing agreements and members of MSDN and TechNet – allows MED-V workspaces to be distributed and managed with existing systems like System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2 or higher.

MED-V 2.0 has also been updated so users can save their Windows passwords, and it supports USB devices like smartcard readers.

Microsoft was once again at pains to differentiate MED-V from the Windows XP Mode that shipped with Windows 7 and also let Windows XP apps run in the new OS.

MED-V adds more enterprise features, Microsoft said. These include the ability to use a custom Windows XP image, automate first time setup, and control URL redirection for Internet Explorer.

MED-V 2.0 accompanied the arrival of App-V 4.6 Service Pack (SP) 1, the update to Microsoft’s application virtualization software. App-V turns applications into software that’s managed centrally and that’s not installed locally on the client machine.

The SP introduces Package Accelerators that let you automatically create App-V application packages using application-installation files instead of “text-based recipes”.

Microsoft’s planning a series of Package Accelerators for its products, starting with Microsoft Project 2010 in April, with Accelerators coming for Adobe Reader 9.4 and others.

App-V 4.6 SP1, like MED-V 2.0, is available as part of MDOP 2011 through the Microsoft volume licensing program, MSDN and TechNet.

Microsoft also said on Thursday that its planned Windows Thin PC – meant to turn an existing PC into a thin client – would be delivered as a Community Technology Preview (CTP) at the end of March. ®
