Mequon company’s software helps catch cable cheaters

March 31st, 2011

Until a few years ago, Time Warner Cable inspectors in Wisconsin had to call into the home office or refer to a long computer printout every time they thought they’d found an illegal hookup.

Now they simply scan the connection with their cell phone.

The phone’s software provides instant information about where cheaters are, which connections should be live and what type of connections they should be. Inspectors can snap a photo of the offenders’ handiwork and attach it to the information in Time Warner Cable’s system.

“It used to be a long, slow process,” said Dean Geyser, Time Warner Cable security manager. “Now we’re able to actively look at the connections in the system and make sure the right people are receiving cable.”

The mobile software has made the company’s audits 20% to 30% more productive, Geyser said.

MSI Data Systems Inc., a Mequon company behind the software, is bringing that same kind of productivity improvement to what some say is a $1 billion software market for small and midsize businesses whose employees work outside the office.

MSI Data was founded in the mid-1980s by Steve and JoAnn Kraninger, who built the company’s software development expertise. In October, the Kraningers sold their company to Harvey Shovers and Pete Piotrowski, who brought marketing know-how, operations experience and big growth plans.

Since then, MSI Data has raised nearly $1 million from Shovers and Piotrowski and outside investors. It has also secured a $150,000 low-interest loan from the city of Mequon’s Economic Development Fund. In December, the company acquired the assets of ServicePro, a New Jersey firm that develops software for managing field service and repair center operations.

MSI Data and ServicePro had good customer lists and great products, Shovers said, and MSI Data had a team of top-notch software developers. Yet neither had focused much on sales or marketing.

“I saw them as sleeping giants,” said Shovers, a former field sales manager for Hewlett-Packard Co. He has 20 years of sales experience in field force automation.

The combined firm has 18 employees and $2 million to $3 million of annual revenue, Shovers said. It competes against thousands of companies that build mobile apps for business customers.
Focusing on smaller companies

Shovers says MSI Data’s advantage is solving specific business problems.

“We’re unique because we’re focused on some very specific marketplaces and using technologies that are easy to deploy and inexpensive compared to the alternatives,” Shovers said.

MSI Data has standard software programs it configures for businesses. Its products are the sort that very large companies like UPS and Federal Express have paid enormous sums to develop.

Smaller companies, like Milwaukee-based Tax Airfreight Inc., don’t have that kind of money, yet their systems are too complicated for off-the-shelf software, said Mark Zeidler, Tax-Air’s president and chief executive. MSI Data provides an alternative.

“Companies like ours can survive because of companies like this,” Zeidler said.

More than 200 of Tax-Air’s drivers have phones loaded with MSI Data’s software, which confirms and tracks deliveries, and syncs with Tax Air’s accounting, billing and other systems.
Dealing with dirt, dust

Total Energy Systems in DePere, which distributes generators and diesel engines in non-highway markets, uses MSI Data software developed by ServicePro to manage its service department, and plans to combine that with MSI Data’s mobile software products.

“We’re on construction sites dealing with HP and Dell laptops, wiping dust of the keyboards,” said Chris Stiles, president of Total Energy. Shortly after MSI Data acquired ServicePro, Stiles said he began talking with the company about adding the mobile software component.

“If we can reduce not only the equipment expense, but increase our productivity at the same time – what business owner wouldn’t be all about that?” Stiles said.

AGIMO outs open-source software draft

March 31st, 2011

The draft, published to the AGIMO blog yesterday by first assistant secretary Policy and Planning Glenn Archer, serves as an update to a document first released in 2005.

The new draft defines open-source software for government departments and explains what needs to be considered when looking at procuring open-source software for agency use.

In her foreword, Ann Steward, chief information officer for the Australian Government, said that open-source offers government departments increased interoperability and greater cost savings versus proprietary operating systems.

“This guide provides practical information to assist agencies assess open-source software solutions, including the key issues to consider when procuring open-source software,” Steward added.

AGIMO has urged agencies to be mindful of factors like total cost of ownership when selecting open-source packages, adding that “free” software doesn’t always mean without cost.

“Another common misconception about open-source software is that it can always be obtained free of financial cost. However, despite this, open-source software is usually available free of upfront costs, although agencies still need to be aware of the total cost of ownership … including all support services that will be required to operate the software over its lifespan,” AGIMO said in the draft.

The draft guide also addresses modification of open-source software and carries various warnings around licensing and copyright issues.

If an agency modifies a piece of software distributed under an open-source license that requires all derivations and changes to be published back to the community, that agency must publish their code or risk being in breach of the license.

Given this legal minefield, AGIMO is discouraging modification of software packages.

“The main focus of this guide is on using open-source software without modifying it,” AGIMO said.

AGIMO is seeking comments on the draft open-source guide via its blog until 15 April.

Microsoft to raise client access licence price

March 31st, 2011

Microsoft is boosting the price of a licence that provides client access to Windows Server, SharePoint, Exchange and Systems Centre, but is sweetening the deal by giving buyers access to a new endpointsecurity product and the new Lync unified communications software.

Microsoft is also expected to lower the price of an enterprise licence that includes more robust access to key Microsoft software.

The annual price of the Core CAL (client access license) is expected to rise from $80 (£49) to $89, according to information distributed by Microsoft partner Softchoice, although final pricing won’t be made official until 1 August. The numbers are estimates that “reflect preliminary info from Microsoft”.

The Core CAL currently provides access to Windows Server, Systems Centre Configuration Manager and standard access to SharePoint and Exchange. Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 and standard access to Lync will be added to the Core CAL, potentially making it a better deal despite the higher price. Forefront Endpoint Protection by itself would cost $10.20 annually per user or per device.

Microsoft would not confirm the final pricing, but said customers who have the Core CAL and have purchased Software Assurance can lock in today’s price and receive the new pieces of software.

“Active Software Assurance customers with Core CAL receive these new rights,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. “The changes are effective 1 August – so now is a good time for customers to renew Core CAL and get these extra components (FEP and Lync Standard CAL) at today’s pricing.”

Client access licences are separate from server licences. They allow individual end users to connect devices such as PCs to Microsoft’s server products.
In addition to the Core CAL, Microsoft also offers the Enterprise CAL. According to the Microsoft partner information, the Enterprise CAL cost will drop from $94 to $86. That means customers who buy both the core and enterprise licences will end up paying about the same price as before. Again, these are estimated prices and the final numbers won’t be known until August.

The enterprise CAL includes Active Directory Rights Management Services; the enterprise versions of SharePoint, Exchange and Lync; System Centre Client Management Suite; Forefront Unified Access Gateway and the Forefront Protection Suite, which includes several products in addition to Forefront Endpoint Protection.

Customers should carefully examine the pros and cons of Microsoft’s licences. They may not necessarily benefit from the additions to the Core CAL.
“I don’t have a single customer who will benefit from this,” says Cynthia Farren, who runs the Cynthia Farren Consulting firm and writes a blog on Microsoft licencing for Network World. “The functionality of Lync Server Standard CAL is pretty limited, so basically unless you’re just using it for PC-to-PC IM it’s not going to be of much use, as you probably already needed the

Enterprise CAL. Forefront Endpoint Protection requires System Centre Configuration Manager (SCCM) to manage it – that’s fine as it’s part of the Core CAL but a good number of my clients have elected to not invest in the manpower needed to implement and run SCCM, so Forefront Endpoint Protection adds no value to them.”

Even customers who don’t need System Centre may still opt for the Core CAL in order to get Windows Server, SharePoint and Exchange at a reduced rate, Farren notes. But customers who purchase the Core CAL, but not the Enterprise CAL, will see a rise in price regardless of whether they opt to use Forefront Endpoint Protection and Lync.

Another benefit of the core and enterprise CALs, according to Microsoft, is that they may be licensed on either a per-user or per-device basis, even when the pieces of software included in the CAL are eligible for only one or the other when purchased individually.

Glencoe software and open microscopy environment founder awarded the BBSRC Innovator of the year 2011

March 31st, 2011

Glencoe Software, a leading provider of image data management tools for life science and biopharmaceutical research and a member of the Open Microscopy Environment Consortium, is proud that its founder Professor Jason Swedlow and the whole OME Team have been named this year’s BBSRC Innovator of the Year. The BBSRC is the United Kingdom’s primary funder of academic research and training in the non-clinical life sciences, and along with the Wellcome Trust, a major funder of research and development undertaken by the OME Team. The Innovator of the Year Award recognizes individual and institutional commitment to realizing the social and economic potential of excellent research.
The judges’ view was that the impact of OME was of remarkably wide benefit due to the flexibility and openness of the approach. The business model is very clever and allows for open source software development – as in, for example, Linux, Java, Mozilla’s Firefox – and at the same time commercial opportunities are possible by licensing and commercialization of Bio-Formats through Glencoe Software. In this way there are both economic and social impacts from the work.
Prof. Swedlow founded OME along with Dr. Peter Sorger and Ilya Goldberg in 2000, and has helped direct the project ever since. As an open source, community-led consortium, OME is now the leading provider of software solutions for biological image management. Central to its success has been the development and uptake of OME-TIFF, a standard image format that can be used across a range of different microscopy platforms, Bio-Formats, the world-leading library for accessing image data stored in proprietary file formats, and OMERO, the world’s leading open source image data management platform.
Prof. Swedlow said, “It is a great honor to accept this award. Our vision has always been to create a global standard for imaging software and the community that has grown up around the open source development is extraordinary. In reality I am receiving this award on behalf of a large group of extremely talented people who share a common commitment to innovation through teamwork, collaboration and the process of creating something new and exciting as a community. The support we have received from BBSRC, as well as the Wellcome Trust, during the early stages of the research, has been invaluable.”
Professor Swedlow also won the category prize for Social Innovator of the Year. He receives a 10,000-pound award as Innovator of the Year. He received his two awards from Mr. David Willets, UK Minister of State for Universities and Science. Two other category prizes – Commercial Innovator and Most Promising Innovator – were won by Professor Chris Lowe from University of Cambridge and Professor Keith Waldron from the Institute of Food Research respectively, each receiving 5000 pounds in prize money.

ProxyInspector – Efficient Traffic monitoring software for enterprise users

March 31st, 2011

ADVSoft announces the release of ProxyInspector 3.1 Enterprise, the latest version of the company’s award-winning traffic monitoring and employee tracking software with ISA server reporting functionality. The program is intended for corporate and business users and drastically simplifies the task of adding monitoring features to corporate networks of any size and structure and provides flexible ISA reporting capabilities covering nearly every aspect of users’ network activities.

The most notable innovation in the new version is a search phrase report that enables the admin to see what exactly their employees look for on the Internet using search engines and whether this information has any relation to their work.

The concept of ProxyInspector is based on the use of proxy servers and specifically their log files containing comprehensive information on users’ online actions. The program supports such popular proxy servers as Qbik WinGate, Ositis WinProxy, Kerio WinRoute Firewall, Kerio Control 7, Squid, EServ, Microsoft Threat Management Gateway 2010 and Microsoft ISA Server 2000/2004/2006. Typical parameters that can be collected by the program include the most active workstations, URL’s of visited sites, overall traffic distribution, protocols used, date and time and more. ProxyInspector demonstrates excellent log file parsing speed even when working with large and very large files.

The log analyzer can automatically import log files from proxy servers, generate traffic usage reports and send them by email. It also enables users to print reports directly from a built-in browser and export them to HTML, Excel XLS and PDF formats.

“The reality of network administration is that the faster a company grows and the more complex its network infrastructure becomes, the harder it is to keep corporate Internet usage under control,” says Dmitry Alferev, senior product manager at ADVSoft. “Our tool is scalable, supports a variety of popular proxy servers and network models, and offers excellent flexibility in terms of ISA reporting and making instant snapshots of user activities across the entire network.”

ProxyInspector Enterprise features full Active Directory support and is capable of working with multiple proxy/firewall servers, both clustered and standalone. As an option, the Enterprise version of ProxyInspector can use Microsoft SQL Server 2008/2005/2000 for storing data.
