JDA’s new software to keep a tab on roads

January 31st, 2011

The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) will soon launch a new software — Project Monitoring Information System (PMIS) — which will have the compiled data of each and every road. The software will help authorities to monitor the condition of roads and help in curbing corrupt practices during their laying.

Nearly 7,000 kilometres of road falls under the JDA. As per the norms, a road constructed should be repaired after every four years. However, it is sometimes difficult for the authority to keep a check on the status of every road. With the help of the new software, the authorities will not only be able to know of the status of each road but can also keep a record of the due date of maintenance. There have been cases in the past where one road had been repaired twice in a year while some were untouched for a long time. JDA chief engineer VS Sunda said: “Till date, we do not have the history of roads in Jaipur. This software will help in taking better decisions.”

While compiling the data, the officials have categorized the roads into three — main, connecting and internal. Once the complete data is compiled, the JDA will upload it on its website so that the commonman can also get to know the status of the roads. “It will be open to all so that anyone can check the due date of their roads and bring to our notice whether work is done on time or not,” said an official.

Data on which projects are currently undergoing and where work is stalled will also be accessible through the software to everyone. “This is a positive initiation by the JDA, as it makes the system more transparent, trustworthy and progressive,” said Amita Shrivastava, professor at University of Rajasthan.

Renu Doot, a resident of Nehru Nagar said, “The condition of the roads in the city is unequal. Influential people get the roads in their areas maintained regularly but nobody checks on the poor standards in other parts of the city. I hope this will end this anomaly.”

In its first phase, a data of around 163 main roads will be made online. The administrative and financial sanctions will also be made online for the public. The project will be on Public Private Private Partnership (PPP) mode, with the private handling given to a company

Tableau Software Doubles Revenue with 2010 Landmark Year

January 31st, 2011

Tableau Software, the global leader in rapid-fire business intelligence software, added yet another feather to its cap in the fourth quarter of 2010 by reporting 106-percent growth year-over-year. This marks six straight years of record growth for the company, which also added over 100 new employees to the company’s growing ranks over the past year.

With total annual revenue just under $40 million, Tableau acquired new customer accounts at a rate of more than 100 per month, and more than doubled its average order amount. After breaking into Gartner’s BI Magic Quadrant in early 2010, Tableau emerged as a “Challenger” to BI industry giants like IBM, MicroStrategy and Microsoft, and anticipates a significant step forward in Gartner’s upcoming report in February. In fact, Tableau is the fastest growing BI platform provider on last year’s Gartner Magic Quadrant report, having overtaken QlikTech in growth rate.

“Results like this can only be achieved when all aspects of a company come together and focus on a common goal,” said Christian Chabot, CEO and co-founder of Tableau Software. “In 2010, this goal was to give customers a truly innovative business intelligence platform that deploys more easily, makes big data run faster, and literally saves them months of staff time that can be put to better use. Based on our tremendous achievements in 2010, I am confident we will continue to disrupt the BI category in 2011.”

Tableau celebrated a number of milestones in 2010:

* Launched Tableau 6.0. This update to its flagship enterprise software added a new in-memory data engine and blazing speeds to Tableau’s signature ease-of-use and visual analytics, and received overwhelmingly positive customer feedback.
* Added more than 1,350 new customer accounts, representing a diverse set of industries. These included household names like Logitech, Nokia, McGraw-Hill Companies, Vanguard Health Systems and the National Health institute, as well as fast-growing start-ups like Groupon, Ning and Zynga. These companies join more than 5,000 existing Tableau customers, who have turned to Tableau’s flagship software for business insight since the company’s inception in 2004.
* Sold out its annual customer conference in Seattle, WA, after more than doubling attendance from 2009 to over 700 attendees.
* Won several awards honoring the company’s innovative technology and business ethos. These included the MCDM “Digital Disrupter” Award in April, a CODie Award for “Best Software Development Solution” in May, and a Stevie Award for “Best New Product – Software as a Service” in June. Tableau was also a finalist in Puget Sound Business Journal’s 2010 Best Places to Work.
* New product Tableau Public achieved massive adoption. Tableau Public is a free service that anyone can use to create and publish interactive data visualizations to the web. Since its launch in February 2010, more than 10 million web pages with Tableau Public data visualizations have been serviced.

A recent independent study by Forrester Consulting, titled “The Total Economic Impact of Tableau Business Intelligence Solution” (November 2010), documented 127-percent return on investment for Tableau customers, citing streamlined processes and improved productivity of business intelligence analysts, among other benefits.

National Motor Club, a leading provider of nationwide emergency roadside assistance and other travel-related services to millions of Americans, was recently added to Tableau’s customer roster and is already experiencing these benefits first-hand. “Tableau has changed the way we find information,” says Matt Krzysiak, NMC’s chief operating officer. “Instead of relying on other people and departments, we now use Tableau to put data into the hands of those who understand our business objectives to help them make the critical decisions that help us achieve those goals.”

Tableau is slated to again nearly double in size by adding another 150 employees worldwide to support expected 2011 growth. “The passion and caliber of our growing staff speaks volumes,” Chabot said.

Since its founding, Tableau has made its mark in the business intelligence space by providing powerful, easy to use analytics with visuals that are unmatched across the industry.

IBM’s Social Software: Unfriending Cisco, Google…

January 31st, 2011

The new competition among the giants of enterprise software: Who is building the most social software? This week, the round goes to IBM.

Big Blue is this week hosting a worldwide customer meeting in Orlando, at which it will show its latest social software for mobile business. The key announcements include collaboration software for smartphones and tablets, including iPads and iPhones, devices using Google’s Android, RIM’s Blackberry, and several Nokia devices. There will also be a preview of IBM’s office productivity suite offering for the cloud — in essence, data center-based Lotus, with collaboration tools accessible by remote devices. Tools and initiatives for external developers will also be announced.

“Tablets are a new design point,” said Alistair Rennie, General Manager of social business and collaboration initiatives at IBM. “You can’t just (build corporate software) starting at the desktop — you have to go to the devices and work back in.”

Social software is more than just the latest buzzword for IBM. It is both a recognition that workers are used to it at home, and thus bringing it into the office. Over the past couple of years, IBM has been working on technology for collaboration that include not just email but instant messaging, web meetings, blogs, wikis, Facebook-type communities and Twitter-like activity streams. The promise is that big companies can become more collaborative environments, where ideas will pop faster, productivity grows, and there are better customer and client relations.

The company says that 57% of companies that invest in social business outperform their peers. As well, collaboration touches all parts of business, from manufacturing and research, to customer service and human resources — for a goliath like IBM, it’s great for big-ticket projects for huge companies. The number Big Blue quotes is a $2 billion market for social business platforms in 2014.

“We have one client, with a few hundred thousand employees,” Rennie said, “they figure this can lead to retaining 1% more top talent — but that is worth $53 million.”

There will be some customers onstage — General Motors and insurer Zurich North America are among those using the products. Zurich, for example, has collaboration software on an iPad for 60,000 mobile workers.
RIM, that mainstay of business will likely talk about building communities, blogs and activities in a secure network or for external networks, in partnership with IBM.

IBM is hardly alone in the push into building a more collaborative enterprise. The work on Lotus, which is compatible with Microsoft’s Sharepoint, seems like a fancier version of many of the key elements of Google Apps, allowing real-time collaboration among global teams. The use of status updates and steams is also a feature in new products by Cisco.

Rennie, not surprisingly, was bullish on IBM’s chances. “You’ll see people with bits of this here and there,” he said. “We’re seeing the business leaders who will drive this. They’re looking at business outcome metrics — can they shorten the time to deliver a new product? Can they more accurately spend the monthly marketing money?” IBM, he said, uniquely has the scale “to do that with business processes, analytics, and with security and compliance to regulations.”

Maybe, but this is still and early round, with a few billion in spending to go before we even see the real leaders.

Poor software responsible for DDC machines malfunction’

January 30th, 2011

Computer Society (NCS), the umbrella body for Information Technology (IT) professionals in the country, has blamed the observed irregularities and difficulties encountered by Nigerians in the ongoing voter registration exercise, on the software deployed.
Worried by the difficulties, which range from long delay in registration, non-functioning and low sensitivity of fingerprint scanners, insufficient ink to print voter’s card, low battery back-up, over-heating and malfunctioning of computers, insufficient Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines, poor managerial skills in handling the machines by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to the inability of INEC officials to test the machines for troubleshooting, NCS said the problems are more of software than computer hardware.
President of NCS, Prof. Charles Uwadia, while addressing a press conference at the weekend in Lagos on the performance of INEC in handling the voter registration, equally blamed INEC for not being transparent enough in its strategies for deploying IT for the entire electoral process.
According to him, if INEC was transparent enough, it would have worked with IT professionals in the country for advice in key technical areas to avoid the problems currently being experienced.
Uwadia faulted the type of software deployed and its specifications. Software, he said, remained the main driver of the hardware, and that once the specification of the software is wrong, it would affect the performance of the hardware itself.
Linux, which is Open Source Software, does not have high security features needed for a nation’s voter registration exercise, he said.
He explained further that NCS offered to bring in its professional competence to bear, for free, and wrote INEC severally, but INEC turned down its letters, only to consult and employ the services of people who are not registered with or known by the computer professional body in the country.
Such action, he said, was a violation of the ethics of the IT profession in the country and not tolerated anywhere in the world
