New store for education software

December 28th, 2010

Google is talking with makers of educational software to help build a marketplace for online learning programs, an industry whose value may approach $5 billion this year.

Games and instructional tools for teachers from companies such as San Francisco’s Grockit Inc.

and Aviary Inc. are already offered in the Google Apps Marketplace, an online store that opened in March.

Google seeks to lure more educational developers, company executives said.

Software sales for colleges and kindergarten through 12th grade this year should surpass the $4.6 billion in 2009, according to Parthenon Group LLC, and become a growth area for Google, which gets most of its revenue from search advertising.

The company works with schools, providing free word processing, e-mail and spreadsheet programs.

Significant Software Development Developments of 2010

December 28th, 2010

With the end of 2010 rapidly approaching, it is time to summarize what I believe are the ten most significant developments in 2010 in the software development community. As I have disclaimed before, this is entirely biased toward my interests. It is difficult to gauge the importance of events in spaces one is not familiar with, so I tend to favor areas that I do know and am able to make some educated (albeit anecdotal) conclusions about their significance. I started writing this blog in late 2007 and have written posts similar to this one on significant software development developments for the years 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Although I enjoy many different programming languages, I would most closely associate myself with Java programming. Therefore, it’s not surprising that this year’s developments are dominated by Oracle’s ownership and stewardship of Java. It is a challenge to decide whether to represent all of these things under one item, to have an item for each issue, or to go somewhere between. I chose the last option and bundle multiple items related to Oracle’s stewardship of Java into a smaller number of groups, but do not limit all of these events to one of the items.

The interesting thing is that even with only 3 days left in the year 2010, there is still the possibility that a major development could occur that should make this list.

Computers and pirated software seized in raid

December 27th, 2010

: Two computers and suspected pirated software were seized in a raid conducted by the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry at a shopping complex here.

Its Dedicated Task Force chief Fahmi Kasim said the two computers and two copies of pirated Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate and two copies of Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 seized yesterday were worth a total of RM8,500.

Fahmi said two persons, both in their 20s, had been detained.

He advised computer dealers to stop the illegal practice of selling computers pre-installed with pirated software, adding that it was not only unethical but also cheated consumers who should get original and genuine software.

“Offenders found guilty of contravening the Copyright Act 1987 risk being fined RM2,000 to RM20,000 for each infringing copy of software, or jailed for up to five years, or both,” he said.

The raid was conducted in conjunction with the national anti-piracy campaign Gerak Gempur Cetak Rompak launched by the minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on May 10 this year. — Bernama

IObit Malware Fighter, New Anti-Malware Software

December 27th, 2010

IObit has just released the first public beta version of IObit Malware Fighter, a new anti-malware software to detect, block and remove malicious software from Windows PCs.

The beta version is currently exclusively available on the official IObit forum and on select third party download sites. Users who are interested in the application should realize that it is still a beta product, meaning that the software can cause problems on some systems or configurations. I did not experience any problems except for the occasional program termination during tests. The program itself seems well designed on the other hand and it seems unlikely that it will have critical negative impacts on computer systems. The application interface looks well designed.

Guard can be activated and deactivated manually depending on the system configuration and needs of the user. No guard functionality information are provided in the application or on the website at this point in time. It is likely that IObit will either implement an on-screen help, help file or other form of guide for users of the software in the final release.

Three types of scans are available; Smart Scan will scan critical operating system files, processes and locations. The full scan scans everything and the custom scan gives the user the option to select the items that should be scanned by IObit Malware Fighter.

Users should take a look at the program settings for additional configuration options. Here it is possible to configure a higher protection level, the scan priority and other scan related settings or if DOG, the digital original gene heuristic malware detection algorithm should be used in addition to signature based threat detections.

IObit Malware Fighter makes use of the cloud to analyze risks. The service utilizes IObit Cloud which is also accessible directly in the web browser.

It is to early to tell how IObit Malware Fighter compares to other anti-malware applications like Microsoft Security Essentials. Interested users can download the latest beta version from the official IObit forum.

Logitech said to turn off google tv alert print post comment retweet facebook sucky software slapdown

December 27th, 2010

Logitech has reportedly suspended production of its Google TV settop box, the Revue, which it unveiled with great fanfare in early October.

Industry sources told the Taiwanese rumor-peddlers at DigiTimes that the suspension was prompted by Google’s desire “to complete updates or to launch a new version” of the software that runs its internet-TV offering.

That may well be true, but the actual cause runs deeper than mere scheduling: Google TV hasn’t exactly set the world on fire.

Plagued by Google TV’s poor reviews and justified criticism, Mountain View has reportedlyasked Toshiba, LG Electronics, and Sharp to hold off on announcing their Google TV products until it can get its software act together.

Sony, by the way, has already launched its (expensive) line of Googly Internet TVs, and Samsung has said that its offerings would be unveiled soon, most likely at next week’sComsumer Electronic Show.

However, with Monday’s rumor of the Logitech pullback, and continuing concern over less-than-glowing reviews of Google TV, it now appears that CES may not be the coming-out party that Google had surely hoped it would be for its internet-based TV offering.

The Revue’s supplier, Gigabyte, declined to comment to DigiTimes about the rumor, and Logitech was also mum when Cnet asked them for confirmation.
