Cloud Drives Red Hat Back to Asia

December 30th, 2010

Closing the year on a high note with a 75 percent share of the Linux market and analysts salivating over its position in the tech industry’s three hot areas of open-source software, cloud computing and virtualization, Red Hat has recommitted itself to the Asian Market.

The database beat of the Bangkok Post quoted Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, vice president of Red Hat Asia Pacific, as saying expanding cloud-computing opportunities with governments and growing the acceptance of open-source solutions are the company’s priorities in the region.

Red Hat is working with the government in China to establish a cloud computing center that offers software-as-a-service to small-to-medium-sized enterprises. The company also recently acquired Makara, a platform as a service (PaaS) application.

The company’s Enterprise Virtualisation and JBoss Enterprise Middleware products continue to gain interest from the telecom and banking sectors in Thailand.

Red Hat is projected to become the open-source community’s first billion-dollar company in 2011. Earlier this month, the company reported quarterly earnings of $235.6 million, an increase of 21 percent from the same period last year. Subscription revenue for the quarter was $198.8 million, also up 21 percent.

Cloud deployment should drive increased revenues through 2011. Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst has said that cloud computing is heavily dependent on open-source software. He estimates that 90 percent of cloud infrastructures in place today use some open-source software.

New version of issue tracking software offers quick views for issue management

December 30th, 2010

The latest version of project management and issue tracking software ProjectManager.com has just been released featuring new quick views into your issues, risks, and change orders on your projects.
Parent company Project Manager Online Ltd. has just announced the latest release of their project management and issue tracking software, ProjectManager.com. This latest release offers new quick views to allow project managers and project team members easy access to issues, risks, and change requests stored in the project files.

“Keeping your issues in check is critical on a project,” states Jason Westland, president and CEO of Project Manager Online Ltd. “Issues arise throughout any engagement – it’s a given. Inconsistent management of issues and lack of issue documentation, tracking, and follow-up are major reasons why many projects fail. If you’re assuming they’re being tracked, then they’re not being tracked. Issues, risks, and change orders absolutely must be in a central repository that is accessible by the team and visible to the team 24/7. Once you ensure that issues are being monitored and controlled, then you’ll have a much better handle on your project.

“Without a central repository, the default is to either track issues and risks via email, a spreadsheet that either only one person has or is always questionably out of date, or to just track in your head … which is a terrifying thought,” says Westland. “With ProjectManager.com, we give the project manager and his team that necessary centralized repository. Project team members can come and go from the project as is sometimes the case and this vital information stays with the project – it doesn’t leave with the departing team member. Knowledge transfer is no longer necessary – it’s all right in one place. And that also helps for lessons learned sessions following the project. You can access all the issues, risks, and change requests in one place and utilize that vital information for your lessons learned meetings with the team and the customer.

ProjectManager.com is both easy to use and inexpensive to use. Widely understood to be one of the quickest to learn web-based project management solutions available, it also comes in at a price that is lower than the competition. A full license for ProjectManager.com is 90% less than that of a Microsoft Project license, yet it contains all of the most popular features of MS Project.
Right now, Project Manager Online Ltd. is offering a free thirty day trial for ProjectManager.com. To signup, or to purchase a full user license, go to ProjectManager.com.

A Skype Windows Software Bug and Server Overloads Caused the Internet Phone Company’s Service Outage

December 30th, 2010

One of the world’s largest Internet phone companies, Skype experienced a two-day outage, apparently due to a bug in the Skype Windows version. The Internet phone company has posted details on its blog explaining what caused the service to be unavailable for millions of Skype users prior to Christmas.
Server overloads and a bug in the Skype Windows version combined to create a set of problems that knocked out much of the network supporting the phone service. Skype is currently trying to assess how its network is built in order to prevent the problem from reoccurring.
According to Lars Rabbe, chief information officer at the Internet phone company, the problems started on Dec. 22, when some of Skype’s servers that handle instant messaging started to get overloaded. Consequently, the responses they sent to Windows machines running Skype were delayed, but in one Skype Windows version, a bug combined with this delay caused the program to crash. Rabble added that about 50 percent of all Skype users were running the buggy 5.0.0.152 Skype Windows version of the software.
The “confluence of events”, noted Rabbe, resulted in Skype being offline for about 24 hours, while engineers struggled to bring the service back to life. To ensure this outage will not be an issue again, Rabble said the phone company would look at its update policy and consider whether it should automatically move Skype users to newer versions of its software. A bug-free Skype Windows version already exists, however it is not automatically given to Skype users.
Moreover, the Internet phone company also said it would assess its network to improve capacity and get on with an investment program that would boost this resilience. Following the outage, Skype has offered compensation to users: pre-pay customers will receive vouchers, while subscribers will benefit from a week of free service.

Software glitch deprives Delhi’’s BPL families of ration

December 30th, 2010

Dec 30 (PTI) A glitch in the software of Delhi government’’s Food and Supply department has apparently deprived thousands of Below Poverty Line and Antodaya card holders in the city of ration since the past five months.

This came to light when a plea of an RTI applicant, who had sought to know the reason for the abrupt stopping of ration supply for these card holder in 70 Circles of Delhi, came up before the Central Information Commission.

“The Assistant Commissioner of North East District has admitted that because of an error in their computer programme, thousands of BPL persons whose biometric data was collected for getting ration have been denied ration supplies,” Shailesh Gandhi, Information Commissioner, CIC said.

Since August this year, the ration supply for thousands of BPL and Antodaya card holders in 70 circles of Delhi were stopped suddenly, it said.

When Marjeena, a resident of Seemapuri and a ration card holder, filed an RTI application in the month of August seeking the reason for the same, the PIO, Food and Supplies Department replied that the the cards were cancelled.

“When the matter came up with the CIC, we found that the information sought by the appellant has been provided in December. After such a long time the government has been unable to tell the BPL card holder why she is not getting her due entitlements. This shows that the government’’s programme to ensure that the poor gets its entitlement has not been able to deliver even in the Capital of this country because of gross inefficiency,” Gandhi said.

The Commissioner has directed the PIO to provide compensation of Rs 2,000 to the information seekers for not providing the information in set time limit.

The Commission also directed the Food Commissioner to provide reasons why the ration has not been provided to the appellant.

Skype outage caused by buggy software

December 30th, 2010

The Skype outage that caused an interruption to its service earlier in December was due to a fault in a version of its software client, the company’s chief information officer has explained.

On 22 and 23 December Skype’s underlying peer-to-peer network crashed, cutting service for consumer and enterprise users of the internet telephony service.

“On Wednesday, December 22, a cluster of support servers responsible for offline instant messaging became overloaded. As a result of this overload, some Skype clients received delayed responses from the overloaded servers,” Lars Rabbe, Skype’s chief information officer, wrote on the company’s main blog. “In a version of the Skype for Windows client (version 5.0.0152), the delayed responses from the overloaded servers were not properly processed, causing Windows clients running the affected version to crash.”

Around 50 percent of Skype’s global users were running the 5.0.0152 version of the software client. The crashes caused around 40 percent of the affected clients to crash. This ultimately took down 25 to 30 percent of all publicly available “supernodes”, Rabbe wrote.

Supernodes are part of the backbone of Skype’s distributed peer-to-peer communications network. Supernodes provide the addressing details of other Skype clients, route data, create local address clusters and help to connect different Skype clients with one another.

Each time a supernode failed, it created a cascading effect, Rabbe wrote. The responsibilities for the failed supernode were passed to the remaining supernodes, which then came under such a load that they began to shut themselves down as they had exceeded expected operational parameters, he continued. Stress on the remaining supernodes was heightened as users who had experienced crashes on their 5.0.0152 Skype client were restarting the software, placing additional strain on the remaining supernodes.

Traffic to the supernodes was about 100 times what Skype would have typically expected from that time of day, Rabbe wrote.

“Regrettably, as a result of the confluence of events server overload, a bug in Skype for Windows clients (version 5.0.0.152) and the decline in available supernodes Skype’s functionality became unavailable to many of our users for approximately 24 hours,” Rabbe said.

Skype was able to restore service by injecting thousands of “mega-supernodes” into the Skype network over the course of 22 December. The mega-supernodes did the jobs typically assigned to supernodes, while helping to stabilise other supernodes in the network, Rabbe wrote. Resources normally dedicated to Skype’s Group Video Calling (GVC) features were used to deploy new supernodes and this caused downtime in GVC, which was restored by 24 December.

In light of the outage, Skype is going to look at the ways it can provide software updates to users to assure that all are up-to-date and will examine its testing process for new software, Rabbes wrote.

Understanding Inventory Software And Asset Tracking Software

December 30th, 2010

Inventory management is not half as complicated as some people believe. Any business that’s serious about their finances needs to be interested in inventory management.

Inventory management is just another word for stock control. This could be anything from a shop storeroom full or clothing to an industrial warehouse full of steel sheets. The reason that inventory software is so important is because you need to ensure you get the perfect balance. Having too little stock can be just as damaging as having too much stock as well. Any stock that’s just sat in your stock room is costing your business money especially if you’ve already had to pay for it. Running out of stock is also bad inventory management as is going to end up costing you customers.

Asset tracking runs along the same lines but it applies just to the fixed assets your business owns. A fixed asset would be anything that your business has had to spend money on but at the same time it can’t make money back from. A an example of your fixed assets might be your desk top computer, the fax machine or even the office pot plant.

You office computers aren’t going to be making you any money directly but they’re needed to ensure you’re staff are making the business money. Everything about each computer would be tracked from the original purchase, any regular maintenance through to when it would be replaced. This is productive as it allows any business to see if any of their assets are costing them too much money.

For insurance purposes you might want to ensure you’ve got fixed asset depreciation software as well. If you’re able to prove you’re definitely quoting the right value of your assets, you might find your premiums are lowered. Your computers are going to devalue as they get older and having the correct software can ensure you’re insuring them at the correct value.
