HTC Wants ‘Sense’ Software on Windows Phone 7 Devices

December 30th, 2010

HTC’s Sense UI has been covering the stock Android OS on HTC’s smartphones for a long time now, and it’s always been a ‘love it or hate it’ affair.

Microsoft, when designing Windows Phone 7, decided to be quite a bit more strict than Google when it comes to UI design. Microsoft’s guidelines for smartphone OEMs don’t currently allow them the same freedom as they have with Android. As a result, the user experience across numerous WP7 smartphones from different OEMs is very consistent (this is the exact opposite of Android-based smartphones).
That could be changing according to comments by HTC’s Drew Bamford, who is in charge of HTC’s User Experience division. “Our expectation is that we will be able to do more over time,” Bamford explained in an interview with Forbes. “HTC’s goal is for the Sense experience to span all of our products.”

Bamford’s comments are understandable. With many new smartphones sharing the same hardware specs, screens, and prices, features within Sense can help allow one product to standout out versus another. However, Sense flies in the face of what Microsoft is trying to achieve with WP7, which Bamford acknowledges. “Microsoft has its own goal of consistency across Windows Phone 7 products. I think it comes down to working closely with Microsoft to do as much as we can.”

Because of software coatings like Sense, Samsung’s TouchWiz and Motoblur, the ‘stock’ Android experience has been limited to very few phones on the market and it’s become a novelty. For example, the fact that Samsung’s Nexus S runs a vanilla version of Android 2.3 is a major selling point. One would think that the extra software coat would be the novelty, rather than the plain version of a device’s original software. In the world of tech, nothing seems to make sense.

Software Patents: Good Idea or Got to Go?

December 30th, 2010

This week, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen revised a lawsuit accusing nearly everyone on the Internet of patent infringement. The lawsuit involves Android, AOL, Facebook, Flickr, Google, eBay, Netflix and other companies that Allen feels infringed on several of his patents including, “Alerting Users to Items of Current Interest.” Allen and his legal team have even begun to call out each company by creating a presentation displaying exactly how each site infringes upon his patented ideas and programs.
Learn more about the suit and cast your vote after the break.
It can be a big deal when a company wins a patent for a certain technology, from Apple’s huge multitouch patents to those, like Amazon’s dual-screen patent that could threaten the competition (namely, the Nook). But when companies patent broader ideas and subsequently go after other companies for using them, it puts a huge damper on the spirit of innovation. I mean, a patent that claims ownership of “Alerting Users to Items of Current Interest” seems ridiculous, no?
What do you think? Do these sorts of patents actually serve an understandable purpose, or are they just a ridiculous way to attempt to claim ownership of a broad idea that could potentially improve many companies and services?

AVS 2.0 Monitoring Software

December 30th, 2010

CyberOptics Semiconductor Inc. has demonstrated the newest application of its wafer vibration monitoring software as well as a new airborne particle sensor for wafer processing equipment.

With vibration tied to semiconductor process equipment failure, and low yields and cycle times, the AVS 2.0 vibration monitoring software provides engineers the data they need to improve processes.

Working in unison with the company’s auto vibration system, the AVS 2.0 enables fab engineers to identify vibration anomalies during wafer processing by filtering out acceptable vibration frequencies produced by regular slow-moving equipment or high-frequency noises between 1 to 200 Hz. New upgrades include enhanced trace plotting (actual graphical data representation) that improves the visual analysis of data, and data exportation capabilities that support third-party applications.

The airborne particle sensor is based on patented particle-sensing technology that monitors airborne particles in process equipment, reporting information in real time to allow engineers to efficiently validate and analyze wafer contamination. By reducing the time and expense associated with process equipment particle qualification, the sensor helps improve die yield and compresses final wafer inspection.

Town of Canandaigua to purchase advanced mapping software

December 30th, 2010

In the near future, residents will be able to access a high-tech, detailed map of the entire town online, as the town is investing nearly $20,000 in a geographical information system that will make certain information accessible to the public.

With the new GIS system, the highway and water departments, as well as the assessor’s office and development office, will also have full access to help with their day-to-day activities. Highway Supervisor Jim Fletcher said that the system will be especially useful in emergency situations for locating pipes, drains and curb stops, which can be hard to find when buried under snow.

“Instead of using metal detectors, we’ll be able to go out with a GPS,” Fletcher said.
The department will be provided with two handheld units for location purposes. The GIS system can provide detailed information on the depth and measurements of pipes, which would be useful for future project planning, Fletcher said, adding that the service will hopefully be implemented by spring of 2011.

The town had $40,000 budgeted for an imaging-services purchase in 2010. This decision needed to be made before the end of this year — otherwise, the funds would no longer be earmarked for the purchase. The Town Board sat through presentations for two different service providers, settling on the system that uses a collaboration of services from Systems Development Group, Fountain Spatial and Way Point Technology for $19,700, said town assessor Don Collins. An additional $1,000 will need to be paid annually for service and maintenance, he said.

Collins said the service will have information on every parcel of land, from measurements to zoning. It’ll be up to each department what information it would like to release to the public, Collins said — currently, deed, acreage, zoning and assessment information already is made available through the town’s website. A current GIS system provides outlines of properties, but the new system will have satellite imaging.

Typically, GIS can be difficult to navigate for the layperson, Collins said, but this system is user-friendly to the point that the public will be able to use it.

“We would have control over what we release to the general public, and between the departments we would have more information than we presently.

Software glitch deprives Delhi’’s BPL families of ration

December 30th, 2010

A glitch in the software of Delhi government’’s Food and Supply department has apparently deprived thousands of Below Poverty Line and Antodaya card holders in the city of ration since the past five months.

This came to light when a plea of an RTI applicant, who had sought to know the reason for the abrupt stopping of ration supply for these card holder in 70 Circles of Delhi, came up before the Central Information Commission.

“The Assistant Commissioner of North East District has admitted that because of an error in their computer programme, thousands of BPL persons whose biometric data was collected for getting ration have been denied ration supplies,” Shailesh Gandhi, Information Commissioner, CIC said.

Since August this year, the ration supply for thousands of BPL and Antodaya card holders in 70 circles of Delhi were stopped suddenly, it said.

When Marjeena, a resident of Seemapuri and a ration card holder, filed an RTI application in the month of August seeking the reason for the same, the PIO, Food and Supplies Department replied that the the cards were cancelled.

“When the matter came up with the CIC, we found that the information sought by the appellant has been provided in December. After such a long time the government has been unable to tell the BPL card holder why she is not getting her due entitlements. This shows that the government’’s programme to ensure that the poor gets its entitlement has not been able to deliver even in the Capital of this country because of gross inefficiency,” Gandhi said.

The Commissioner has directed the PIO to provide compensation of Rs 2,000 to the information seekers for not providing the information in set time limit.

The Commission also directed the Food Commissioner to provide reasons why the ration has not been provided to the appellant.

Get free software for your new computer

December 30th, 2010

A company called Ohrizon has announced the SoftwareSherpa Computer Starter Kit. This a simple $20 tool that helps you find safely and easily set up free software from the internet that can save hundreds of dollars for someone who just purchased a new computer.

If you recently got a new computer and it’s been a while since your last one, chances are you have either lost the media and license code to the software you had installed, the software came preinstalled so it cannot be installed on another computer, or the software is just too old and won’t work on the new operating system.

Chances are you need Microsoft Office, Anti-virus software, maybe Photoshop, and perhaps some web design tools like Dreamweaver. To go out and buy all of these would cost $100’s if not $1000’s of dollars. Instead of spending all that money, all of these programs can be replaced by good free alternatives found on the internet.

Your son\daughter told you to never, ever download and install any programs from the internet. He’s afraid you’ll infect the computer and he will have to come over and fix it, again. It’s hard to know what software is legitimate and what is fake, virus infected software. You’d ask you son\daughter to do it be he\she is 2 hours away in school at The Ohio State University and won’t be back for weeks.

That’s where the SoftwareSherpa comes in and helps. For a small onetime fee of $20, this little bugger will go out and download a bunch of free software of your choice. It gets the software from the source and verifies it’s authentic. Then it does the installation for you as well. All you have to do it tell it what you want.

Currently it supports over 20 software programs including:

Open Office – A Microsoft Office replacement
Gimp – a Photo Shop like program
Inkscape – Similar to Adobe Illustrator
Kmopozer – Replacement for Adobe Dreamweaver
Audacity – Music editing software
Avast! Antivirus
And Much More
Certainly all this software can be found and installed for no fee at all, but this tool is designed to help those that are not familiar with the internet find and install this software hassle free.
