Suit claims NYC stole 9/11 DNA software secrets

October 31st, 2010

A software company that helped identify the remains of 9/11 victims is accusing the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office of handing its secrets over to the FBI.

A Manhattan federal judge has been asked to decide if the lawsuit, filed in March by the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Gene Codes, can go forward, The New York Times reported Saturday. New York City has filed a countersuit claiming Gene Codes didn’t meet its contractual obligations.

Gene Codes’ software, known as the Mass-Fatality Identification System, helped the city analyze and organize the DNA of victims of the terrorist attack. Both sides signed a three-year contract in 2002, for which the city said it paid $13 million.

The company claims that after the contract expired, New York refused to pay it to maintain the system, then gave the FBI proprietary information once the system crashed. The city claims Gene Codes had agreed to upgrade the system for free after the city’s initial investment, and when the company didn’t follow through, it was necessary to move the information to the FBI’s database.

In court filings, the city claimed it had co-created the system by giving the company access to its database of 9/11 victims’ DNA data and giving the company guidance on system updates.

BuZZ Shout-Out! and Jessica Sitomer Give Listeners the Competitive Edge

October 31st, 2010

The BuZZ Shout-Out! – an innovative way to help jobs find people in the production and post-production industry – was recently launched by the Digital Production BuZZ, the foremost interactive internet talk radio show featuring news and information on digital video production, post-production and distribution. To support this effort, the BuZZ teamed with Jessica Sitomer, CEO of The Greenlight Coach, and show regular since 2009, to provide job-hunting tips as part of the program.

The Buzz asked Sitomer to write suggestions on what makes for a compelling marketing ad, and has compiled all of her dozen show interviews on the BuZZ Shout-Out! website page. Sitomer has worked in the entertainment industry for eighteen years, twelve of those years as a career coach for Entertainment Industry Professionals, and each of her interviews provides essential information on finding and keeping work.

The topics of Sitomer’s interviews include the importance of improving a resume, three things you can do when you are not getting hired, marketing tips to improve your skills when looking for work, pitfalls to avoid in marketing yourself at a trade show, how to get a job in Hollywood, and how to get a job if you don’t live in Hollywood.

“In today’s competitive job market, your job hunting skills are just as important as your creative skills,” said Larry Jordan, Executive Producer and Host of the Digital Production Buzz. “We are delighted to be working with Jessica Sitomer to provide on-going tips and techniques job hunters can use to improve their ability to find work.”

A theme that runs through Sitomer’s interviews is the emphasis she places on the business side of looking for work. “You may want your talent to speak for itself, but talent alone won’t find you a job,” says Sitomer, “You need tools and strategies for getting agents and work, because this is also a business. If you stay home, no one will find you.”

Sitomer advocates building relationships, creating extensive contact lists, taking chances, and actively networking yourself to promote your business brand. As Sitomer says, “You need to be the CEO of company YOU. You need to take action.”

One of the actions job hunters in production and post-production can take is to create a 30-second audio ad for the BuZZ Shout-Out! that describes their services and lets prospective employers know what they can do. Says Sitomer of the BuZZ Shout-Out!, “This unique promotion lets everyone in audio, film, or video production or post-production reach exactly the right market.”

“We are delighted with the response the BuZZ Shout-Out! has generated in our industry,” said Larry Jordan. “It would be great if we could give everyone a job. Since we can’t, we’re doing the next best thing – providing a free and creative way for industry professionals to help a job find them.”

The Buzz Shout-Out! is made possible by key sponsors, Data Robotics, Inc., MAXON Computer, and SmartSound Software, Inc. All are equally committed to helping industry professionals find work.
