New software helps edit billions of pixels in seconds

October 31st, 2010

Computer scientists have developed a software that quickly edits “extreme resolution imagery,” huge photographs containing billions to hundreds of billions of pixels or dot-like picture elements.

Until now, it took hours to process these “gigapixel” images. The new software needs only seconds to produce preview images useful to doctors, intelligence analysts, photographers, artists, engineers and others.

By sampling only a fraction of the pixels in a massive image – for example, a satellite photo or a panorama made of hundreds of individual photos – the software can produce good approximations or previews of what the fully processed image would look like, reported computer graphics journal, ACM Transactions on Graphics.

That allows someone to interactively edit and analyse massive images – pictures larger than a gigapixel (billion pixels) – in seconds rather than hours, said Valerio Pascucci, associate professor of computer science at the University of Utah in the US.

Pascucci defines massive imagery as images containing more than one gigapixel – which is equal to 100 photos from a 10-megapixel (10 million pixel) digital camera.

“You can go anywhere you want in the image,” he said. “You can zoom in, go left, right. From your perspective, it is as if the full ’solved’ image has been computed.”

He compares the photo-editing software with public opinion polling: “You ask a few people and get the answer as if you asked everyone. It’s exactly the same thing.”

The new software – Visualisation Streams for Ultimate Scalability, or ViSUS – allows gigapixel images stored on an external server or drive to be edited from a large computer, a desktop or laptop computer, or even a smart phone, Pascucci said.

“The same software runs very well on an iPhone or a large computer.

Software to fight hacking technique bags award

October 31st, 2010

One of the serious threats to a user’s computer is a software program that might cause unwanted keystroke sequences to occur in order to hack someone’s identity.

This form of an attack is increasing, infecting enterprise and personal computers, and caused by “organized malicious botnets,” said Daphne Yao, assistant professor of computer science at Virginia Tech.

To combat the “spoofing attacks,” Yao and her former student, Deian Stefan, now a graduate student in the computer science department at Stanford University, developed an authentication framework called “Telling Human and Bot Apart” (TUBA), a remote biometrics system based on keystroke-dynamics information.

Their work won a best paper award at CollaborateCom ‘10, the 6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing, held in Chicago and sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers’ Computer Society, Create-Net, and the Institute for Computer Sciences.

Yao holds a patent on her human-behavior driven malware detection technology, including this keystroke anti-spoofing technique. Her technology for PC security is currently being transferred to a company. The license agreement between the company, Rutgers University (Yao’s former institution), and Virginia Tech is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.

Internet bots are often described as web robots. They act as software applications that run automated tasks over the Internet. Bots usually perform simple and repetitive tasks, but at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human alone. When used for malicious purposes they are described as malware.

“Keystroke dynamics is an inexpensive biometric mechanism that has been proven accurate in distinguishing individuals,” Yao explained, and most researchers working with keystroke dynamics have focused previously on an attacker being a person.

The uniqueness of Yao and Stefan’s research is they studied how to identify when a computer program designed by a hacker was producing keystroke sequences “in order to spoof others,” they said. Then they created TUBA to monitor a user’s typing patterns.

Using TUBA, Yao and Stefan tested the keystroke dynamics of 20 individuals, and used the results as a way to authenticate who might be using a computer.

“Our work shows that keystroke dynamics is robust against the synthetic forgery attacks studied, where the attacker draws statistical samples from a pool of available keystroke datasets other than the target.

A Call for Action at the First Regional IPR and Cyber Crime Conference in Jordan

October 31st, 2010

Adobe Systems Incorporated MENA (Nasdaq:ADBE) and the Business Software Alliance, the global trade association representing the software industry, in cooperation with the Jordanian National Library closed its final session of the First Regional IPR and Cyber Crime Conference in Amman, Jordan with a number of recommendations for governments and companies to help them reserve intellectual property rights and reduce software piracy.

“Two-thirds of Middle East businesses are at risk of using unlicensed or pirated software, 67% of businesses lack formal systems for software asset management, and 80% fail to identify the operational and viral threats to businesses using pirated software,” says Abdallah Saqqa, General Manager, Middle East & North Africa, Adobe Systems. “We at Adobe aim to educate businesses on the risks, which extend beyond legal and financial penalties.”

The event tackled a number of issues that the current world faces as a result of software piracy and breaching of intellectual property rights (IPR) to include; economical deficiencies as a result of piracy, violation of user privacy, cyber crime, and IPR infringement and its effect on the business environment.

“IPR is a strong driver for boosting economies, increasing investments and creating jobs,” says Mohammad Hijazi, Intellectual Property Office Manager at the Egyptian Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA). “Awareness is key to overcoming cyber crime, not only with the general public and companies alike -but also by training law enforcers and judges to properly deal with cases of cyber crime.”

The meetings resulted in a number of action recommendations for both governments and companies to include the following:

* Creating public and corporate awareness of the effects of cyber crime on individuals and businesses through targeted workshops

* Encouraging research and development to focus on cyber crime

* Generating more media interest in the issue to help raise public awareness

* Approaching schools and universities to create early- age awareness of the dangers of cyber crime

* Establishing specialized cyber crime courts and passing new laws that help protect user and company rights

“This conference was a call on industry leaders and decision makers from the government and the private sector to directly address the risks of IPR violation and cyber crime,” says Jawad Al Redha, Co- Chair of the Business Software Alliance (BSA). “The aim is to enhance and establish stronger relationships between Arab countries as well as create an open platform for exchanging information and experiences.”

In most Middle Eastern countries, software piracy over the last few years has only varied by around 2-3 %, however the financial losses that this represents can be more than $100M in some countries.

“Adobe encourages all businesses to conduct a self-audit of their software license procurement and deployment practices to ensure compliance,” added Saqqa. “We are working closely with customers and to educate them and to address the misconception of piracy.”

VRX Studios Enters Software Realm with MediaValet

October 31st, 2010

VRX Worldwide Inc. (TSX VENTURE:VRW) is pleased to announce that its wholly owned subsidiary, VRX Studios Inc. (“VRX”) has released the community preview of its new, one hundred percent cloud-based, digital asset management system, MediaValet™.

“Two years ago we started looking for a digital asset management system that could help us manage our rapidly growing archive of travel related virtual tours, video slideshows, still images and interactive maps,” commented David MacLaren, president and CEO of VRX. “Our challenge was the large amount of digital content that we were steadily amassing and the thousands of hotels around the world that wanted access to the content on a regular basis.”

“Failing an exhaustive search for an existing solution, we made the difficult decision to enter the software realm and develop our own digital asset management system,” stated MacLaren.

MediaValet™ is an enterprise class, digital asset management system that’s a hundred percent cloud-based, highly scalable, globally accessible, and can handle thousands of users at a time.

The advent of the Cloud has enable VRX Studios to create one of the first global digital asset management systems, and in the process, has expanded VRX Studios’ opportunities beyond the travel industry.

MediaValet™ is built on Microsoft’s Windows Azure ‘cloud’ platform. Azure provides the scalability, reliability, and global reach necessary to satisfy the system requirements of large organizations that have terabytes of digital assets, multiple locations, suppliers and distribution channels, and dozens – if not thousands – of users.

“To our surprise, many of our hotel customers have been experiencing similar content management challenges as we have,” stated MacLaren. “We look forward to introducing them to MediaValet™ and to exploring opportunities beyond the travel industry.”
