Apple sues Motorola over smartphones software patents

October 31st, 2010

Apple Sues Motorola: Apple yesterday filed a lawsuit in Wisconsin against Motorola saying the smartphones manufactured by the latter infringe the intellectual property of the Cupertino-based firm. In its nine-page complaint, Apple listed three patents, alleging that Motorola is violating with its phones and the software applications controlling those devices. The devices include Droid, Devour i1, Charm, Backflip and Cliq.

The primary patent covering touchscreen device, method and interface is 7,479,949. Other patents in the Apple lawsuit include 6,493,002 and 5,838,315. “Motorola directly infringes and/or will infringe the ’949 patent by making, using, selling, offering for sale, and importing the mobile devices and related software practicing the claimed inventions of the ’949 patent. Moreover, Motorola is aware of the ’949 patent, at least because Motorola was provided with a copy of this Complaint upon its filing. Motorola indirectly infringes the ’949 patent by knowingly inducing the infringement of these patents by end users of its mobile devices,” Apple said in its first complaint.

The second complaint covers patents 7,812,828, 7,663,607 and 5,379,430. Patently Apple first reported the complaints and the report added were filed on October 29. They cover six patents. The first complaint is broken into two parts and weighs in at a whopping 362 pages.

It may be recalled that a Motorola unit had sued Apple in Wilmington, Delaware, on October 11, asking a court to rule it doesn’t infringe 12 Apple patents for manufacturing its smartphones. Motorola claimed in its lawsuit that the patents aren’t valid. The case is Apple Inc. v Motorola Inc., 10-CV-662, in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.

Microsoft acquires 3-D sensor technology developer ‘Canesta’

October 31st, 2010

Software giant Microsoft announced on Friday that it has acquired Canesta, a company that makes 3-D sensor technology for chips. Canesta employs 70 employees and has raised about $70 million and Microsoft acquired the company because its technology would fit into Microsoft’s push toward NUI, a natural user interface.

“Microsoft has long pursued a vision of natural user interface — Canesta has developed some interesting technology for sensing gestures that complements the advances already under way at Microsoft,” Microsoft spokesman Lou Gellos said in a statement. “Microsoft has a long history of investing in this technology, and this acquisition is just part of that long-term strategy; it is not for any specific product in the future.”

Kinect is used in the Xbox 360 video-game system and it is a new motion sensor that allows users to play by moving around in front of the Kinect camera. Microsoft will start selling Kinect from November 4. Neither Microsoft nor Canesta have disclosed the terms of the deal.

Microsoft’s chief executive, Steven A. Ballmer, recently said in an interview that the company is planning to advance the gesture technology well beyond video games. “I’m excited to be way out in front and want to push the pedal on that,” Ballmer said. Microsoft and its partners could use the technology developed by Canesta to equip PCs, televisions, cars, cellphones and other devices with gesture recognition features.

Taiwan-based Quanta Computer has also invested in Canesta and the company is planning to use the technology to give robots on their assembly lines some visual smarts. “We have a really broad mission to enable everyday devices with the ability to see, and enable natural user interfaces across all kinds of devices,” said James Spare, chief executive of Canesta.

VMWare remote desktop demo for iPad

October 31st, 2010

VMWare, who compete with Parallels in the Virtual Machine marketplace, and produce software which allows you to run Windows, Linux and other operating systems as virtual machines inside various flavors of other desktop OS, have demoed an early Alpha version of their Remote Desktop app for the iPad.

Parallels already have an iPad Remote Desktop app. VMWare’s competing piece of software is called ‘VMWare View Client’, and is slated to ship early in 2011.

In a video from a VMWare preview session the app can be seen being used to log into a Windows computer back at VMWare’s HQ, via WiFi and the internet.

After logging in you can use the iPad’s touch interface to interact with the Windows desktop, type into applications, move things around, and ‘touch click’ pretty much anything that you could ‘mouse click’.

There is also the option to pull up Windows specific hot keys, as well as a small virtual track pad so that you can move a mouse pointer around.

All in all, for an Alpha demo, it seems pretty solid and feature packed.

Reverse mortgage CRM provider continues to add new clients

October 31st, 2010

Reverse Fortunes announced it has added 1st Reverse USA as its latest client for their customer relationship manager (CRM). The company recently released an updated version of the software that is tailored to the needs of lenders originating reverse mortgages.

“As we develop our retail distribution channel, we see it as an operating necessity to have a Reverse Mortgage specific CRM that has been developed by Reverse Fortunes,” said Dan Harder, Division Manager of 1st Reverse USA. “The challenge we had with other CRMs is that they did not have the necessary data to meet our needs and accomplish our goals.”

The web based technology integrates with loan origination software from Reverse Vision and allows originators to quickly order title, obtain “live quotes” and export data directly to other origination systems says Reverse Fortunes.

“The addition of First Reverse as a client validates the business model and the growing need for a common data platform that can connect to ‘Best of Breed’ vendors/lenders,” said Shannon Hicks, Partner and SVP of Reverse Fortunes. Pricing for the CRM starts at $29 per month and increases as the company adds additional users according to Hicks.

Reverse Fortunes says that other companies like First Maryland Mortgage/Great Oaks Lending, Security One Lending, Franklin Advantage, Mortgage Shop LLC, Residential Reverse, and American Pacific Mortgage are all using the technology.

Nintendo releases (Tentative) software launch window

October 31st, 2010

The word has already gone out everywhere that Nintendo plans to release its much anticipated 3D handheld in February 26th, 2011 for Japan, and with North America and Europe to follow the month after. But there is still much mystery and speculation about their ever-expanding software lineup. What games are guaranteed to be launched alongside the system, and how many more will be given official release dates.

Well, now you can wonder…slightly less, as Nintendo has released a tentative launch window for some of their 3DS titles, with plans to have at least four games ready and waiting alongside the handheld come February.

From this list, it seems the most likely titles to receive the launch date honor are NintenDogs+Cats, PilotWings Resort, Steel Driver, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS. The last entry closely matches with the DS’ launch, which included an expanded port of Super Mario 64. While normally this would guarantee that Zelda will sell the most titles at launch, Japan’s deep love for virtual pets (mostly on account of the typical Japanese home being too small to own a real one) might just usurp Link’s 3DS debut.

For North America and Europe, we have a much more vague list of upcoming releases.

While the March 2011 date continues to stick for the handheld, it’s apparently too early to decide which games will make it for our 3DS launch. Again, Zelda would seem the most likely candidate, as any localization should be easily finished up by copying the original Nintendo 64 script. More cultural games like Animal Crossing and NintenDogs+Cats may require a bit more fine-tuning, and may be delayed a bit further.

Hopefully more concrete dates will follow shortly.

AT&T: Software trouble in Bogalusa cell phones

October 31st, 2010

AT&T says it’s having cell phone software problems in Bogalusa.

The Daily News reports that for weeks, AT&T cell phone customers have seen the screen go black after a number rings once. It happens often, for stretches of time.

AT&T spokeswoman Sue Sperry says new software installed by AT&T is causing the problems. She says the company is working on the problem.

Sperry says customers who have run into the problem can request a break on their bills by calling customer service at 611 on their cell phones, going online for a customer service chat, or calling customer service from their home phones. She says it will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Sperry says it’s unrelated to installation of 3G towers in Washington Parish.
