Will kindles be needed once the kindle software is available for the ipad?

The iPad and the Kindle are interesting devices to compare because in a few ways they are similar, those being in size, and in some ways appearance, but in most ways they are very different devices.

The Kindle is a device designed to do one thing, and do it very well while the iPad is a far more diverse device.

It allows you to do hundreds of different things and many of those it does very well, but the question is whether reading is one of the things that the iPad does well enough that it makes the kindle superfluous.

The first thing to consider is the price. If you have no interest in doing anything except reading then this matters quite a bit as the price of the Kindle is about a sixth the price of the iPad.

This is an important point but if the iPad is actually better in every way then this is a minor point in the argument itself because the iPad is going to go down in price eventually.

The second point is the library of ebooks. Without books it does not matter how good a device is for reading because books are the king of any ebook device.

Amazon has made this largely a moot point as you can can get any book in the Amazon ebook library on the kindle iPad app, but this actually gives a small advantage to the iPad because while Amazon has most of the books that you will want to read, the iPad also has access to other ebook libraries and this may become more impressive as time goes on, though the hope of everyone, except those selling ebooks is that they will come up with a standard format so people can simply buy and read the book they want.

The final, and most important question though is one of what it is actually like to read on each device and this is where the Kindle is able to prove its worth.

If you have not read on an electronic ink device then it is easy to assume that it might be similar in some way to reading on the iPad but it is not.

Reading a few pages on a iPad isn’t bad but it is not as easy on the eyes and there have even been studies that show that reading on a more traditional screen like the iPad reduces the recollection of what you have read so while it may not be for everyone there is no doubt in my mind that the Kindle will have a place in the gadget market for quite some time.
