TwinStrata Introduces Cloud Storage Appliance Optimized for Data Protection

September 30th, 2010

TwinStrata, Inc., a pioneer in Cloud Storage data protection solutions, today announced that its CloudArray(TM) software is now available as an appliance. The company’s new SAN appliance offers all the features and benefits of its CloudArray software in a pre-configured, performance-optimized package that can be quickly and easily installed in any data center or colocation facility.

The CloudArray SAN appliance joins the CloudArray virtual appliance to enable the first family of cloud storage data protection products that provide software, hardware or mixed deployments both on-premise and in the cloud. CloudArray is an enterprise-class data protection solution that enables organizations to create affordable and secure data protection and disaster recovery plans that include online remote storage for backups, archives and critical business data. In the event of a disruption or outage, the data can be restored on-site, off-site, or in the cloud. CloudArray seamlessly integrates existing applications to the storage cloud while providing secure, anywhere, anytime application accessibility.

The CloudArray SAN Appliance is packaged in a 2U rack mountable enclosure and is available in two configurations. Model 1 is equipped with 8TB raw/6TB of configured RAID 5 storage for local copies and cache, along with two 1Gigabit Ethernet ports. Model 2 can be configured with 16TB raw/12TB of Raid 6 storage, as well as either four 1Gigabit Ethernet ports or two 1Gigabit Ethernet ports and one 10Gigabit Ethernet port.

Key features and benefits of the CloudArray appliance include:

Simple Installation and Setup: The CloudArray SAN appliance is fully pre-configured, and simple to deploy and use.

Seamless Integration with Applications, Physical and Virtual Servers: CloudArray enables businesses to seamlessly and securely integrate existing business applications to cloud storage without any changes to applications or programming of cloud provider APIs. CloudArray supports applications running on both physical and virtual servers.

Flexible Storage Configurations: CloudArray volume policies for caching and replication allow data to be cached locally for quick access and replicated to cloud storage for high availability. CloudArray provides zero-footprint data snapshot services in the cloud for point-in-time copies for rollback, test and development, data analytics and for other applications. CloudArray volumes can be configured to be partially cached or up to 100% cached, depending upon the application. The latter option allows for consistent copies of volumes in two separate locations; local to the organization’s data center and in the cloud.

Data Availability and Security: For increased data protection and to ensure high data availability, the CloudArray SAN appliance offers data copy policies that replicate data across local storage and a variety of third party storage cloud providers. CloudArray also enables replication between service providers. CloudArray compresses and encrypts data prior to transporting it to public cloud storage to ensure data security and privacy. CloudArray leverages the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), adopted by the U.S. government and also used to secure top secret information.

Affordability: The CloudArray SAN appliance is priced starting at $14,995.

“TwinStrata’s introduction of a physical appliance makes it easier than ever for service providers to rapidly deliver robust cloud storage services to their customers,” said Steve Lesem, president and CEO of Mezeo Software. “With the addition of a fully integrated appliance to the CloudArray product family, our Mezeo Ready Premier Hosting Providers will have the option to deploy a simple plug and play multi-site backup and disaster recovery solution that works in their existing environments with absolutely no rip-and-replace of software required.”

“Our goal is to deliver groundbreaking solutions for organizations seeking to back up, store and protect their data on and off-site,” said Nicos Vekiarides, CEO of TwinStrata. “Our new SAN appliance simplifies the deployment of what has been a cumbersome and, in some cases, unattainable multi-site data protection solution at a substantial cost savings over other off-site storage alternatives.”

DirectSmile simplifies web design in new Cross Media software

September 30th, 2010

DirectSmile has extended the capabilities of its latest Cross Media personalisation software after adding the ability to create bespoke websites and e-mail campaigns without html coding knowledge.

The new software, Cross Media Designer, is a single-screen interface that features a toolkit incorporating the elements required to build websites and send e-mail marketing.

According to the company, this will benefit printers that want to diversify into electronic marketing and provide a more comprehensive service offering to customers.

Axel Marciniak, general manager at Direct Smile, said: “There is no other software in the world that can build response-intensive PURLs and e-mails as easily, just by dragging and dropping elements into a layout.

“This provides a highly effective and low cost entry into digital marketing with fast start up.”

DirectSmile claimed the focal point of new designer toolset is a “dynamic” preview area that details realtime progress and previews how the created site will look in a range of web browsers.

“Without HTML know-how and programming skills, anyone can now easily produce layouts for PURLs and e-mailings, including personalised customer-relevant images, headlines and body copy, and distribute the finished result to a database of individual recipients,” added Marciniak.

Antivirus 8 is to Make Your Life Complicated

September 30th, 2010

More days bring more threats to the computer world. This time a new rogue anti-virus software has been created by some cyber criminals.

Antivirus 8, also known as Antiviru8, is just another variant of the previously created rogueware Antivirus 7 which has caused many problems to computer users. This time the updated fake software seems to be ready to make even more terrible mess.

Once Antivirus 8 is installed on your machine, it starts committing the action plan from A to Z. Due to the fact that Antivirus 8 is based on Trojans, it has the ability to get to your PC through the system security holes. The application does not even need to get your permission. It just installs itself and does many changes to your computer.

First, Antivirus 8 modifies the registry by making the permission for the software to start every time Windows boots up. After that the so-called system scans begin. Although they look like the scans of a legitimate antivirus software, every computer user should be aware of the fact that they are simulated and not real.

So the scans are immediately followed by the annoying alerts and messages popping up like mushrooms after a heavy rain. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that Antivirus 8 tries to make you believe you need to pay money in order to fix your computer. But the biggest threat is the fake application which should be removed as soon as possible.

CSC Customers Harness Cloud Hosting Via Oracle

September 30th, 2010

CSC (News – Alert) has announced the ability for its customers to transform their business applications to a cloud hosting infrastructure using Oracle hardware and software products.

Called CSC Foundation Services for Oracle (News – Alert), the new ability is designed to guide clients on their journey to the cloud — from selecting and transforming applications to establishing their own private cloud environment.

Company officials said that it works together to assist clients in leveraging Oracle’s integrated stack from applications-to-disk; including storage, servers, virtualization software, databases, middleware, application and management software.

Andy Bailey, senior vice president for Worldwide System Integrator Alliances at Oracle, said that CSC’s Foundation Services, built on Oracle’s platform, provide customers with accelerated development and deployment of SaaS (News – Alert) and cloud based business applications with increased agility and reduced IT costs.

One of the features of this offering is the development of a demonstrable reference architecture that provisions Oracle applications, middleware and infrastructure via virtual instances. Thanks to this reference architecture and the accompanying services, customers have been able to establish their own private cloud environments.

“Enterprise workloads based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) require integration with the underlying middleware and infrastructure such as that provided by Oracle,” said Sreedhar Kajeepeta, vice president for CSC Global Technology (News – Alert) Consulting.

Kajeepeta said that CSC has developed a global practice and service offerings to enable the clients’ rapid adoption of cloud computing while extracting optimal value from the Oracle Platform Products.

CSC Foundation Services for Oracle include services to support decision-making around the application of cloud services in the customer’s business. Company officials said that these range from defining business process requirements to optimize business value to designing cloud architecture that ensures information security and compliance.

Moreover, it also comes with services to help turn cloud strategy into a reality. These services cover launching chosen cloud technologies, configuring them to meet client-specific business needs, and setting them up for integrated management and reporting, even across multiple clouds. Company officials said that CSC enables private cloud solutions on the client’s premise or on CSC premises.

And, CSC manages private, public or hybrid cloud infrastructures and helps the client select and implement the right cloud to meet business requirements.

“Foundation Services for Oracle is one example of CSC applying its experience and capabilities to application transformation and modernization,” said Siki Giunta, vice president for Cloud Computing and Software Services at CSC.

Earlier this year, CSC signed a five-year master service agreement with UBS, estimated to be up to $580 million, assuming provision of the full scope of services over the five-year term.

JDA Software’s 2010 Pulse on Pricing and Revenue Management Survey Reveals Revenue Growth in Travel, Transportation and Hospitality

September 30th, 2010

According to a recent survey “2010 Pulse on Pricing and Revenue Management” conducted by JDA® Software Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: JDAS), companies in the travel, transportation and hospitality industries are achieving strong revenue increases up to 3 percent using advanced pricing and revenue management technology.

JDA polled 120 travel company executives at its 2010 Pricing & Revenue Management Conference earlier this year to identify the business impact of using pricing and revenue management technology and provide a snapshot of the state of pricing and revenue management across a range of industries. The survey revealed that more than three quarters of the respondents made over 1 percent in additional revenue gains, while close to a third claimed as much as a 3 percent gain. A total of 96 percent reported a positive return-on-investment (ROI) within three years, while 42 percent achieved ROI in the first year.

Survey respondents were comprised of the following industries: rail (28 percent), followed by hotel and leisure (18 percent), tour operators (12 percent) and consulting (7 percent). Of those companies reporting increased profits, almost all were utilizing advanced revenue management technology.

“With the success of revenue management in the airline industry, other industries such as hospitality, passenger rail and cargo transportation have begun to adopt similar approaches to pricing and revenue management that enable accurate demand forecasting, pricing and revenue optimization,” said Andy Archer, regional vice president, Pricing and Revenue Management Group, JDA Software. “This year’s survey found that as market forces change and price transparency continues to increase, this technology will continue to grow in importance. In an era of competitive price transparency, understanding how to effectively integrate optimal pricing as part of the overall revenue management strategy simply helps companies make more money.”

Whereas price flexibility is accepted by consumers in certain industries, particularly in passenger air transport, consumers are still very sensitive to price fluctuations in passenger rail. Rail companies in the U.K., for instance, have less flexibility in making price adjustments because of government restrictions on ticket prices and conditions.

Added Archer, “Without a doubt, this survey reveals good evidence that adopting advanced pricing and revenue management technology will help passenger travel and hospitality companies worldwide to improve revenue and business performance, as well as effectively respond to their customers’ needs. While once considered a ‘nice to have,’ we believe that pricing and revenue management technology has quickly become a ‘must-have’ for companies looking to remain competitive. JDA stands committed to helping companies achieve real results illustrated in this study through our innovative Price Sensitive Revenue Management™ solutions.”

When considering technology providers, JDA recommends seeking pricing and revenue management solutions that deliver an integrated approach to balancing supply and demand through the following capabilities:

Demand Forecasting – Advanced demand forecasting analyzes the price elasticity of demand and its effect on a consumer’s willingness to pay, providing companies with the comprehensive visibility they need to shape demand.

Price Optimization – Through price optimization, companies can improve their pricing strategy and set optimal prices based on competitive rates, capacity restraints, local market demand, and economic and other company factors. A well-defined strategy will allow the company to capture maximum revenue and market share.

Revenue Management – With automated revenue management, companies can gain a competitive advantage by allocating the right amount of perishable inventory or constrained capacity to the right customer segments to achieve maximum profitability.

Asset Optimization – Optimizing asset utilization is critical to driving revenue. By using a sophisticated solution, companies have the ability to analyze and implement high-impact network decisions, improve utilization of inventory and capacity, balance supply and demand, and improve business processes and efficiencies.
