The latest threat report of security company Fortinet revealed that imitative antivirus programs are already available and practice some of the money-raising methods that introduce even more threatening malware.
TotalSecurity W32/FakeAlert.LU!tr was the most spread malicious program in August, pretending to be antivirus software. It was sold as a useless license for non-existing malware. The company announced that during the month this imitative program generated about 37.3 percent of all badware threats.
The new version of TotalSecurity is a bit different from standard imitative antivirus programs. It has a more compound acting structure and uses a special trick. Blocking all applications accept a web browser,
TotalSecurity notifies them as being “infected”. Then the user is asked to eliminate the infection with the help of sham TotalSecurity product, which should be bought from the same company.
TotalSecurity may change the downloads it handles in order to win PC with server-side polymorphism. Surely such actions make it difficult to disclose the malware.
Fortinet considers that such attacks only show the insecurity of PC-based antivirus software. There would be much more chances for PC defense and TotalSecurity disclosure to survive if it wiretaps the initial spam or prevents the access of download website.
Today it is not a surprise that badware is spread quickly and in big numbers. It has become more advanced as it uses various threatening methods and directs intrusion into a PC’s operations.
