OpenNMS wins infoworld bossie award for networking software

August 31st, 2010

For the second year in a row, the OpenNMS project (www.opennms.org) has won InfoWorld’s prestigious Bossie (Best of Open Source Software) award in the “Networking Software” category. The Bossie Awards annually recognize the best open source software for business.

Tarus Balog, OpenNMS project maintainer and CEO of The OpenNMS Group, Inc, said: “We are humbled once again that OpenNMS has been selected for a BOSSIE Award. The success of OpenNMS is due to the thriving open-source community that has grown up around the project, and InfoWorld’s recognition of the excellence of OpenNMS is all the more notable because OpenNMS is a 100% free and open source project, without any outside funding or investment.

Balog noted further: “We are also pleased to point out that, of the other open-source projects that won in the networking category, OpenNMS integrates with three of them: Hyperic HQ, RANCID and OTRS. It is a honor to be in their company, and in the company of all the other winning projects, too.”OpenNMS is the world’s first enterprise-grade network management application platform developed under the open-source model. It is a 100% free software alternative to commercial products such as HP Operations Manager, IBM Netcool and Tivoli, and CA Unicenter.

Because OpenNMS is open source software, there are no license costs. Since the software code can be freely modified, OpenNMS can also be changed to fit the way the organization works, instead of having to change processes and procedures to fit the software.

The OpenNMS Project went live on SourceForge (as project number 4141) in March 2000. We recently celebrated our tenth anniversary as an open source community. Project contributors live all over the world; there are OpenNMS installatio.

VMware maritz virtually pronounces death of windows

August 31st, 2010

It could not have been easy for former Microsoft exec Paul Maritz to pronounce the death of the operating system today.Maritz, who is CEO of VMware, said during his keynote today that virtualization and new application frameworks combined represent the de facto operating system for the IT-as-a-Service era since the two layers of the new stack handle all of the hardware and application services once provided by operating systems.

Okay, Maritz did not pronounce the death of Windows verbatim but referred to the changing role of the OS as a legacy software layer that needs to get a new life. He did say the era of client/server is over.Hardware is going to virtualization and the role of abstracted services to applications is going to new frameworks,” he said. “The traditional operating system won’t disappear .. but is one component that need to fit into this world..

The tide is going to change with or without VMWare, he said. But yes, VMware has all the virtualization software and application framework components needed in the third era of computing.OS gone? An obvious conclusion, but coming out of the mouth of a former Microsoft exec? Ouch.Kick off your day with ZDNet’s daily e-mail newsletter. It’s the freshest tech news and opinion, served hot. August 31st, 2010

InfoWorld Recognizes Vyatta as Leader in Physical, Virtual and Cloud Networking With Third Consecutive Bossie AwardVyatta has announced that IDG’s InfoWorld has honored the company with a third consecutive Bossie Award.

The 2010 Bossie Award for the Vyatta open routing and security software once again validates Vyatta’s long-standing technology leadership and provides further impetus for the industry to standardize on open source networking.

Our goal from the inception of Vyatta has been to challenge traditional vendors on price, performance and overall value while creating a new breed of network operating system that easily addresses physical, virtual and cloud computing environments,” said Kelly Herrell, CEO of Vyatta.

The Bossie 2010 award winners are our top picks among open sourceprojects for many different reasons,” said Doug Dineley, executive editor, Test Center, InfoWorld. “Some are longtime favorites, and others are completely new. Some are fast ways to fulfill a familiar need, while others allow companies to do things that weren’t possible or affordable until they came along. The one quality they all share is extreme usefulness, and a combination of features that beats all others in their class.

Quest software slapped with countersuit in patent case

August 31st, 2010

Aliso Viejo-based Quest Software Inc., a maker of business software that helps companies be more efficient, got slapped with a countersuit after it filed patent infringement complaints against two competitors late last week.

Sunnyvale-based Centrify Corp., which makes business software that improves upon Corp.’s Active Directory, filed a lawsuit against Quest in the Northern District of California late Monday.

The company alleges that Quest’s authentication services infringe on a key part of its technology offering. The technology allows open source operating systems, such as Unix and Linux, to be authenticated within a centralized directory, Centrify said in a statement.
Centrify is seeking damages and an injunction on the so-called infringing products.

The move by Centrify comes after Quest sued it and another competitor, Bellevue, Wa.-based Likewise Software Inc., for patent infringement.

Centrify seems to have been a bit blindsided by the initial suit.

“We were surprised to see Quest’s lawsuit, particularly given the patent asserted against us, the strength of our intellectual property position, and the fact that we had never been contacted by Quest Software regarding any concerns they may have had regarding intellectual property,” Centrify Chief Executive Tom Kemp said in a statement.

Kemp said Quest’s suits are “a baseless attempt to distract Centrify and slow its leadership and significant growth vis-a-vis Quest in the market for securing and auditing access to cross-platform systems and applications.”

Quest announced that it filed the lawsuits late on Friday evening at the U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The patent in question stems from Quest’s acquisition of Lindon, Utah-based Vintela Inc. in 2005 for about $57 million in cash. At the time of the buyout, Microsoft had a minority stake in Vintela.

“Since acquiring Vintela in 2005, Quest has invested heavily in Vintela’s products to ensure they remain the market-leading tools,” said Jackson Shaw, Quest’s senior director of product management for the identity management solutions unit. “Centrify and Likewise copied and benefited directly from the patented features that helped make Quest’s product for group policy the industry standard.”

Quest is also seeking damages and an injunction from both Centrify and Likewise.

Quest’s software improves upon other business software programs by Microsoft, Oracle Corp. and other big names.

It ranks as the third-largest software company in Orange County by sales and had a recent market value of nearly $2 billion.
