Why a sku is important to software asset management

June 30th, 2010

Most folks are familiar with bar codes. Every time we go to the grocery store and check out, the cashier scans our groceries one at a time and the register automatically knows what we purchased, how much it is, and they probably even trigger when they need to reorder that item. Part of that bar code is the SKU (Stock Keeping Unit), which is a uniform method of tracking products sold.

As the name implies, the SKU is intended to help producers track inventory in stock, but it can also be used by resellers, and even the people who purchase the item to keep track of what they’ve purchased.

So a box of 50 yellow widgets would have one SKU because it can be sold as a box, while one blue widget might have a separate but related SKU because it can be stocked and sold individually as well.
Click here for a more detailed definition of the SKU.

SKU for Software

Software is similar to any product that uses SKUs. You can buy one copy, or multiple copies. Some software can be purchased with a software license for a specific number of machines, while other times you would purchase the same software to be licensed for a specific number of users. Each of these is a unique instance that needs to be tracked separately.

It’s because of the uniformity and broad use of SKUs that it’s imperative that any software asset management (SAM) tool include capabilities to track software by SKUs.

Most publishers reference their software using a SKU. This SKU is usually attached to every purchase order line to clearly identify which software or package is purchased by a customer.

Even if there are very small differences between two software titles sold by a publisher/reseller, such as, the publisher program or in the maintenance, they usually carry two different SKUs.

A software-only licenses

June 30th, 2010

Cleversafe has emerged in the market in a new way with its knot united between its data protection hardware and software. From now on, it will cater to a range of customers who would be ready to use third-party hardware, as it is left with a set of software-only licenses for customers.

Cleversafe’s products are used to cut data into slices, using an Accessor server, which is then distributed across many dsNet servers or Slicestors in a scheme, which can afford to have six Slicestors fail from a set of 16 and even then keeping the data intact.

It’s cost-effective than a RAID-and-replication combination and have more data availability and can scale to huge capacity levels. Cleversafe, in a deal is selling this to cloud service providers and enterprises.

The company’s latest v2.1 software release like APIS is known to connect billing and CRM systems to the dsNet along with making dsNet software available on its own.

The company has not clearly spoken about its plan to stop selling hardware. A software and hardware company, like Cleversafe becoming a fully software company grabs many attention with the point that with only-software, there’s a smaller operation to be managed and at the same time software margins are almost always higher than hardware companies running on commodity components.

The general trend, if observed, shows the storage arrays move on to have Intel controller processors and the controller software changing over to connected servers instead of embedded controllers.

Accesser 2.1,one of the Cleversafe’s software including a CPU socket will cost $4,200, Slicestor 2.1 storage nodes with per spindle pricing will makea 4-spindle license cost $3,800 and a 12-spindle worth $10,200, and the Manager 2.1 management system will cost $7,000 per CPU socket.

June 30th, 2010

Online event management, meeting site selection and web survey provider Cvent has announced that more than 500 new customers have adopted its event management software in 2010.

The company produces software to automate event management processes, decrease costs and boost event attendance. New customers include The Boeing Company, Nationwide Mutual Insurance, BusinessWeek Magazine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
