Adobe contemplates monthly patch cycle

May 31st, 2010

hile Apple has turned up the heat on Adobe by refusing the Flash platform on the iPhone and iPad platform – Adobe’s customers have been coming under increasing fire from attackers for using its Flash and Adobe Reader applications. Now the company is considering taking a move from Microsoft’s playbook and switching to a monthly patch cycle.

When it comes to security, Adobe has had a rough few years. But that’s what happens to software companies that focus so heavily on features and design and barely a nod toward developing sustainable and secure applications. And from what I’ve been able to tell, that’s exactly what Adobe has done for far too long.

Now its business customers are putting on the pressure (not unlike the pressure government agencies and Fortune 500 businesses placed on Microsoft after so many worm attacks earlier this decade) on Adobe to help better keep their systems secure.

According to this report from The H Security:

In view of the large number of security vulnerabilities discovered in recent months, major customers appear to have increased the pressure on Adobe to reduce the interval between security patch releases. Arkin has told The H’s associates at heise Security that a monthly cycle is one of the alternatives currently under discussion. He adds that, in emergencies, Adobe is also now in a position to develop patches within 15 days and to release them outside of the regular patch cycle. This compares with the 80 days Arkin’s team needed to develop a patch for the JBIG2 vulnerability in spring 2009.

In addition to Adobe Reader, the company wants to bring products such as Flash and Shockwave into the update cycle. Previously, updates for these products have been released as needed and when ready. It’s not clear whether products other than Adobe Reader will be patched automatically by means of the new update mechanism.

The article doesn’t say what the new update mechanism may be, but let’s hope it’s not modeled after the updater provided for OS X which is one of the buggiest, most useless software utilities I’ve ever been forced to contend.

While the increased patch cycle is welcomed, and will help to reduce the “window of vulnerability” to its customers, the company really has to do more to secure its new and legacy codebase.

Late last year, security vendor McAfee predicted that Adobe Reader and Flash would surpass Microsoft Office applications as a favorite target of cyber criminals. From Antone Gonsalves story, Adobe To Surpass Microsoft As Hacker Target:

In unveiling its 2010 Threat Predictions report, McAfee said the growing popularity of the Adobe products has attracted the attention of cybercriminals, who have been increasingly targeting the applications. Adobe Reader and Flash are two of the most widely deployed applications in the world.
As a result of Adobe’s success in client software, McAfee Labs believes “Adobe product exploitation will likely surpass that of Microsoft Office applications in 2010.”

Security experts for quite a while have warned of the potential security risk posed by Flash. In November, Foreground Security identified a flaw in the way Web browsers handle Flash files that could be used to compromise Web sites that have users submit content.

Apple on top of the world

May 30th, 2010

Little Apple, the original but maligned developers of what we now know as the personal computer, overtook mammoth Microsoft, whose Windows operating system is the global standard and runs on about 90% of the world’s PCs. Apple is now the most valued technology company – on the stock exchange at least.
They write scripts like this in Hollywood. Apple has always been a niche player in the computer world, despite its illustrious history and spectacular habit of producing spectacular designs and computing masterpieces.
Microsoft, meanwhile, evolved from being a supplier of software on standardised hardware into being the centre of the computing world; with a vast global monopoly and setting the agenda for corporate and personal computing for the past three decades.
On Wednesday, on paper at least, Apple reversed that when its market capitalisation surged past its old rival (and it’s been a bitter, sometimes vicious, rivalry). Apple is now worth of $222.1-billion to Microsoft’s $219.2-billion – even more noteworthy when you consider that, back in January 2000 when Steve Ballmer become Microsoft’s CEO it was worth $556-billion while Apple’s was a mere $15.6-billion.
How the mighty have fallen. And the innovative have flown.
Microsoft, once it got into the pound seats, controlling almost all aspects of the computer interface – and without any meaningful competition, got fat and lazy. It stopped innovating, its software became more and more bloated, less and less effective and when the virus writers morphed from being show-off geeks into out-and-out cyber criminals, we all discovered how much security Windows lacked and how easily it could derail our productivity. Bill Gates put a PC on every desk, but no one foresaw they’d become the portal to cybercrime.
Apple, in the meantime, had fallen on hard times. Desperately so. But in a stroke of genius they bought the software company of their founder, called NeXT, and in 1997 reinstalled him to the CEO position he’d been ousted from.
The first iMac he launched in 1998 was nothing spectacular, but returned to the all-in-one model of the original Macintosh computers, one of which I once owned. But a few years later the second-generation (2G) iMac was significantly more stylish and used these new things called flat-panel monitors. It was followed by new laptops and desktops … and a little thing only about as big as a pack of cigarettes, but able to hold thousands of songs in this new MP3 format.

NZ legislation software in line for $14 million boost

May 30th, 2010

The Government will spend more than $14 million upgrading near-new software designed to computerise the drafting and publication of legislation. The troubled $28.4m New Zealand Legislation system — previously called PAL — was launched in 2008, five years after its original due date, costing five times more than first budgeted. The Parliamentary Counsel Office has already spent $4.1m on system maintenance and improvements since 2008.

Spokeswoman Gillian McIlraith says the $10m in capital expenditure budgeted for the system over the next four years will cover further improvements to the search and browse functions of the New Zealand Legislation website. The office will also simplify the “technical structure” of the system to make it easier and more efficient to operate for those drafting legislation.Other enhancements include establishing a back-up system that can be operated remotely in the event of a core system or computer failure, and could see repealed and historic legislation made available for search through the website, she says. By 2014, the office plans to go to market for a new support provider in a bid to reduce costs.

System supplier Unisys is providing support and maintenance services, but a review of the system carried out after its launch revealed the office was paying Unisys significantly more than originally agreed.Ms McIlraith says the money for the system improvements is “depreciation income”, and was approved by the Labour Government in 2008. “It is usual to invest depreciation income back into a complex IT system, to ensure its longevity and sustainability.”

The system includes various “standard IT products” and bespoke features in order to manage legislation from drafting through to publication. “The level of system support, maintenance and enhancement is typical for such an integrated drafting and publication package.”The system provides free access to up-to-date legislation, and makes it possible for users to track the progress of bills, and will reduce costs for users and purchasers of legislation once the website is officially recognised in 2012 as a source of legislation, she says.

For many there will no longer be a need to maintain as many — or possibly in some cases any — sets of printed copies of New Zealand statues and regulation … significantly reducing the costs of acquisition, to zero in some cases, and the costs of storage.”Unisys New Zealand managing director Brett Hodgson says it has a good relationship with the office and plans to be involved in supporting the system in future.”A number of independent reviews have put it at the forefront in their industry worldwide. It’s never fallen over… and every month there are 30,000 visitors to the site. It’s certainly meeting the demands and expectations it was launched under.

Apple passes microsoft as no. 1 in tech

May 30th, 2010

Microsoft depends more on maintaining the status quo, while Apple is in a constant battle to one-up itself and create something new, said Peter A. Thiel, the co-founder of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook. “Apple is a bet on technology,” he said. “And Apple beating Microsoft is a very significant thing.”As of Wednesday, Wall Street valued Apple at $222.12 billion and Microsoft at $219.18 billion. The only American company valued higher is Exxon Mobil, with a market capitalization of $278.64 billion. The companies have comparable revenue, with Microsoft at $58.4 billion and Apple at $42.9 billion. But in their most recent fiscal years, Apple had net income of $5.7 billion, while Microsoft earned $14.6 billion.Microsoft has more cash and short-term investments, $39.7 billion, to Apple’s $23.1 billion, which makes the value assigned by the market to Apple, essentially a bet on its future prospects, all the more remarkable.

Microsoft’s chief executive, Steven A. Ballmer, shrugged off the shift Thursday morning. “No technology company on the planet is more profitable than we are,” he said in New Delhi, where he had come to tout Microsoft’s cloud computing plans. On any given day, the stock market is a voting machine,’’ he said, and only ‘‘in the long run is it a weighing machine.”Apple declined to comment.Apple’s climb to the top of the heap cements the reputation of Mr. Jobs, who once operated in the shadow of Microsoft’s co-founder, Bill Gates. It is the single most important turnaround that I have seen in Silicon Valley,” said Jim Breyer, a venture capitalist who has invested in some of the most successful technology companies.

While Apple is at the top of its game, it faces a new and powerful rival in Google, which is battling Apple in mobile devices with its Android operating system, and mobile advertising.Google, with a market cap of $151.43 billion, also appeared to leap ahead of Apple in a new potentially important area, Internet-connected televisions. And Google is steering consumers toward yet a new model of computing in which Internet applications, rather than iPhone or desktop applications, rule. The battle has shifted from Microsoft against Apple to Apple against Google,” said Tim Bajarin, a technology analyst who has been following Apple since 1981. “Apple has a significant lead. But Google is going to be a powerful competitor.”Apple and Microsoft initiated the personal computing revolution in the late 1970s, but Microsoft quickly outflanked Apple and grew to be one of the most profitable businesses ever created.A little more than a decade ago, Apple, which had pushed out Mr. Jobs in 1985, was widely believed to be on the path to extinction.

Michael S. Dell, the founder and chief executive of Dell computer, went so far as to suggest that Apple should shut down and return any money to shareholders. (The computer maker is now worth about a tenth of Apple.) Around the same time, Microsoft’s chief technology officer called Apple “already dead.”
But with the return of Mr. Jobs to Apple in 1996 — and an investment by Microsoft of $150 million — the company began a slow path to recovery. Apple’s rebirth began in earnest with the introduction of the iPod music players, and Mr. Jobs began to gain a reputation for anticipating what consumers want. The company elbowed aside Sony and came to dominate the music distribution business with the iTunes online music store.

It later upstaged Nokia, the dominant brand in mobile phones, by introducing the iPhone in 2007. And this year, Mr. Jobs shook things up again, with the introduction of the iPad, a tablet computer that has the potential to create a new category of computers and once again reshape the way people interact with their devices.Mr. Jobs helped create “the best desktop computer, the best portable music device, the best smartphone and also now the best tablet,” said Steve Perlman, a serial entrepreneur who was an executive at both Apple and Microsoft and is now the chief executive of OnLive, an online gaming company. As Apple grew increasingly nimble and innovative, Microsoft has struggled to build desirable updates to its main products and to create large new businesses in areas like game consoles, music players, phones and Internet search. Microsoft, which is a component stock of the Dow Jones industrial average, has lost half its value since 2000.

Mr. Ballmer said Thursday that while Microsoft has “some very good competitors,” the company is a very good competitor itself. Yet Mr. Ballmer seemed to concede that Microsoft needs improvement in some areas.Windows phone – boom! We have to deliver devices with our partners this Christmas,” he said. Feedback so far has been good, he said, but the company still has “a lot of work to do.”Still, Microsoft is a hugely powerful and profitable company in the tech world. Its Windows software runs 9 out of every 10 computers, while more than 500 million people use its Office software to perform their daily tasks, like writing letters or sending e-mail messages. These two franchises account for the bulk of Microsoft’s annual revenue. But Apple has the momentum. “Steve saw way early on, and way before Microsoft, that hardware and software needed to be married into something that did not require effort from the user,” said Scott G. McNealy, the co-founder and longtime chief executive of Sun Microsystems.

App assure backup and disaster recovery software helps protect healthcare provider data

May 30th, 2010

AppAssure Software, a provider of award-winning backup and recovery software for Windows application servers, today announced that Southeastern Urological Center, P.A.’s medical management system – GE Centricity – is now affordably protected by AppAssure’s flagship backup and disaster recovery product, Replay 4.

For over 40 years, Southeastern Urological Center, P.A. in Tallahassee, FL., has given patients the most comprehensive urological health services, with cutting edge of technology, including GE Healthcare Solutions for staff, patients, and medical procedures.

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), Barry Jalbert works to stay ahead of the technology curve by using Replay 4 backup and recovery suite, with SEUC’s primary facility and three remote offices. With 120 users, two websites (one with a patient portal) and about 19 servers (including a virtual server) Jalbert was always concerned about the traditional tape backup solution they were using. With SEUC’s medical and management recording done electronically on the GE Healthcare system, if a server went down, everything basically stopped: SEUC staff couldn’t look at records, doctors weren’t able to look at a patient’s history in order to make diagnoses, and surgeries couldn’t be scheduled.

According to AppAssure Software, Jalbert did a Replay 4 demo and realized he had found the backup and disaster recovery features he had wanted for awhile:

- A test environment where his whole database is not on the line
- The ability to replicate off-site
- Virtualization recovery
- Restore snapshots down to several minutes.

In the healthcare industry,” notes Jalbert, “having our equipment working constantly and steadily is vital part of our work – with little or no downtime. With Replay 4 backup and recovery suite, I can restore so easily! I don’t have to catalog a tape, do an inventory, etc. and it’s all in just a partial amount of time.”

Jalbert says that he is convinced he has made the right decision that he presented Replay 4 at Centricity Technical Users of Information Technology’s Annual Conference in New Orleans in January. “I believe in this product. I feel more confident about all my systems, and AppAssure’s tech support has been great!”
