Rim acquired qnx software systems to tie phone to cars

A deal has been signed by Research In Motion with Harman International to acquire its QNX Software Systems unit so that its BlackBerry smartphones could be tied to car navigation systems. Though the terms of the deal have not been announced so far. If it manages to pass regulatory approvals, the deal will be closed within 30 to 45 days.

RIM will tie its BlackBerry smartphone closer to in-dash navigation systems. Mike Lazaridis, RIM’s President and Co-chief Executive at RIM shared that the planned acquirement of QNX will also bring other value to RIM in terms of supporting certain unannounced product plans for intelligent peripherals, which will definitely add intellectual property to RIM’s portfolio.

A real time embedded Operating System has been designed by QNK. It has tied it to ARM, MIPS, PowerPC as well as other processors and embedded designs.

Dan Dodge, the Chief Executive of QNX stated that the car is going to become the first-class citizen of the cloud. The owner would be able to access all the connected media. He said, “It’s probably one of the most exciting times in automotive history”.
