Worldwide project and portfolio management software market declined 1.5% in 2009 gartner

April 30th, 2010

Worldwide project and portfolio management (PPM) software revenue totaled US$1.16 bn in 2009, a 1.5 percent decrease from 2008 revenue of $1.18 billion, according to Gartner, Inc.

“After a five-year period of strong, mostly double-digit growth, the financial turmoil in late 2008 and subsequent spending uncertainties in early 2009 left a negative mark on the usually robust PPM market in 2009,” said Laurie Wurster, research director at Gartner.

“Falling growth rates provided flexible vendors and new entrants the opportunity to be creative with business subscription and delivery models, such as software as a service (SaaS), and drive revenue up by meeting client requirements.”

Combined market share for the top 5 PPM vendors increased significantly in 2009, up to 58 percent of the market compared with 43% in 2008. Oracle went from being the No. 4 vendor in 2008, with 7.7 percent market share, to the leading vendor, with 22.6 percent of the market in 2009.

Ms. Wurster said that Oracle’s strong growth in 2009 can be attributed to the December 2008 acquisition of Primavera Systems, the long-term PPM market leader.

CA’s revenue increased 14.6 percent in 2009, largely owing to its subscription-based revenue recognition model, which results in revenue being recognized gradually, after the contract is signed, and ,thus, the vast majority of its revenue came from contracts signed up to five years prior to 2009.

Adobe strikes back at Steve Jobs

April 30th, 2010

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Adobe’s CEO Shantanu Narayen came out yesterday to defend its Flash software and the developers who build it against a spittle filled rant from Steve Jobs.

Steve “lets sic the cops on the press” Jobs repeated all that he had said before, namely that Flash is not open, it’s buggy, and it causes his toys to break and smells of wee.

Narayen gave a video interview to the Wall Street Journal, saying that Jobs had a completely different view of the world from Adobe.

He said that the world is multi-platform and that simply did not suit Steve Jobs’ vision. Narayen said that Jobs should let consumers decide.

He pointed out that if the technology doesn’t work, consumers won’t choose it. The fact that people have built applications using Adobe’s technology, the fact that they’ve deployed it, means that it benefits both publishers and consumers, he said.

“It doesn’t benefit Apple and that’s why you see this reaction,” Narayen said. In the real world developers prefer to build one web application and deploy it across multiple devices. They don’t develop software for just one platform like the Iphone.

Meanwhile Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch has also waded into the fray, saying that the primary issue was whether or not Apple should block Adobe’s widely used runtimes as well as a variety of technologies from other providers.

However, he said that given the legal terms Apple imposes on developers, “we have already decided to shift our focus away from Apple devices for both Flash Player and AIR.” µ

Exprodat releases new version of exploration play fairway analysis software

April 30th, 2010

Exprodat announces the release of version 201 of Team-GIS Segment Analyst, a toolkit for building common risk segment maps for use in exploration play fairway analysis. With Team-GIS Segment Analyst petroleum E&P companies can improve their understanding of play risk, reduce technical uncertainty and significantly reduce technical evaluation cycle times.

Team-GIS Segment Analyst is an ArcGIS extension for creating common risk segment maps of basins and play fairways. Multiple input layers from disparate sources (e.g. depositional environment, paleogeography, etc.) can be used as proxies and rapidly assigned numeric risk values in order to create risk maps for key play system elements such as reservoir, source and seal, which can then be combined into a common risk segment model.

With Team-GIS Segment Analyst the user can better understand play extents, spatial risk distributions, identify ’sweet-spots’ and ultimately develop and refine play investment strategy.

Exprodat’s Technical Director, Chris Jepps, says:

‘Since its release last year we’ve continued to use client feedback as our driver for enhancing the product. In this version there are a number of usability features designed to shorten the workflows within the tool, as well as new functionality such as being able to calculate ‘combination’ probabilities in order to model the chance of any of a number of factors occurring. In a fairly short time we’ve been able to produce a version of the product that makes it even easier for our customers to create common risk segment maps from geological data.’

Exprodat’s Team-GIS product suite is made up of a number of extensions to ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop that provide ‘out-of-the-box’ functionality designed specifically for the needs of the petroleum sector.

Team-GIS software is data independent and allows E&P companies to integrate vendor data with in-house datasets for use in GIS-based spatial analysis.

ArcGIS is a scalable family of software products comprising a complete geographic information system (GIS) built on industry standards. ArcGIS is used for the creation, management, integration, analysis, display, and dissemination of spatial data. Visualization, editing, and analysis, along with advanced data management, distinguish the ArcGIS software family as the leading GIS software.

Much more than a specialized offering for a small niche of specialists, ArcGIS is designed as a scalable system that can be deployed in every organization, from an individual desktop to a globally distributed network of people.

Software beats bullies as brisbane it firm ships safechat system

April 30th, 2010

Brisbane-based IT firm NetboxBlue has developed the SafeChat system to allow schools to stop cyber-bullying by monitoring and blocking inappropriate language on social networking sites such as Facebook.

The NetboxBlue system uses IBM hardware and customised software to block inappropriate words students try to send through email or post on social networking sites. After the post or email has been blocked the system alerts the school, which can see what has been written.

SafeChat can also be used on school laptops even when they are not accessing the internet from a school network, which means the school will be notified of inappropriate online behaviour even when the laptop is being used at an internet cafe.

NetboxBlue chairman John Fison said the system had attracted interest from Europe, Asia and South America.

“Although computer protection is a very competitive market, we believe our product is sophisticated enough to carve out a unique global footprint,” he said.

One of the state’s largest independent schools, John Paul College, is already using the system. Director of Information and Communication Technologies at the college, Kathryn Priol, said she was impressed the school can change which words are listed as inappropriate.

“It’s really quite easy to change the configuration of the system to suit the needs of our students at each year level,” she said. “It is just another way we are committing to carrying out our duty of care to the students even if they aren’t using their notebooks at school.”

Media and communication lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology Dr Jason Sternberg said he found the potential for misuse of the SafeChat system troubling.

“In the wrong hands this technology, which basically borders on surveillance, could actually limit a child’s education,” he said.

“If a principal decides that words like sex or breast are inappropriate, it means a child at that particular school might not get access to sexual education material or any information on things like breast cancer.

“I would actually be very concerned if a school I sent my child to was using software that had such enormous potential for misuse.”

Lexus gx 460 sales resume in us, software upgrade for traction control offered

April 30th, 2010

AFTER a ‘Do Not Buy’ warning issued by Consumer Reports lead Toyota to halt sales of the US-market Lexus GX 460, sales have resumed thanks to an updated stability-control system.

The report, which claimed that the Prado-based SUV could potentially roll over in certain situations, was another straw on Toyota’s back in a year that has seen the world number-one carmaker suffering with recalls and mechanical issues.

This week, Lexus Group Vice President Mark Templin issued a statement declaring the GX 460 safe, the company’s engineers successfully identifying and remedying issues in the the vehicle’s stability control system.

Thanks to the quick response and hard work by our engineers, we were able to identify and correct the issue in just about two weeks. This is our assurance to Lexus customers that their safety and satisfaction are our top priorities,” Templin said.

Dealers in the US have been instructed to contact customers to arrange a software upgrade for each vehicle.

“As previously announced, we will continue to provide a courtesy vehicle to anyone who has purchased a 2010 GX 460 and has concerns about driving it until the recall work has been completed,” Templin said.

The Lexus GX 460, which shares its platform with the Toyota Prado and the US-market 4Runner, is not offered in Australia. Toyota Australia has confirmed that the local Prado is not affected by the stability control concerns found with the GX 460.
